Greetings!
Happy New Year!
Wishing you all the best for a fantastic 2011! Here's a brief look back on our year at Ride West, with a review of some of the projects that we hope have been of benefit to you. Sales: As a smaller dealership, it is really important that we have outstanding sales people that not only sell new and used BMWs and used bikes of all brands effectively, but do it in the manner that reflects how we think of ourselves. Most of you know Sales Manager John Heale and long time sales institution Roman Lemeshkov. In late summer we were fortunate to add Jake Crabtree. Jake brings to us not only extensive knowledge of motorcycles past and present, but expertise on the entire BMW product line. More importantly perhaps, his friendly and customer oriented approach has meshed perfectly with what we are all about. Service: The best indicator of a expert service operation is longevity, and we're pleased to report that each of our four techs have been at Ride West for more than seven years. Mark Eddy, our Service Manager, is beginning his ninth, and our "newbie" Service Writer, Cameron, is working on his forth. At the same time, we have labored to get the word out that our Service Department is one of the very few that can work on motorcycles of all brands, and is eager to. Parts & Apparel: Like Service, we are pleased to have made virtually no changes in our Parts and Apparel Departments, other than the welcome return of Colin Busch from a lengthy ride to South America! Finance & Insurance: When John Heale was named Sales Manager, Dave Lenton was freed to spend more time on our Finance and Insurance programs, and he and Loretta have made great progress in providing customers with valuable options in insurance on their motorcycles, cars, and homes. Why not give them a chance to see if they can save you money? Rider Education: We have worked very hard with several motorcycle safety course providers, and with the state DOL, to provide an increasing array of education opportunities for our rider customers. Those efforts include MSF classes having their start with an evening in our store, a plethora of seminars, and training days for state and local MSF instructors based at our dealership. We have some truly exciting new developments in these areas - which I cannot tell you about yet! Customer Service: You are probably well aware by now of the antics of Dave Preston. He has worked since the very first of the year to build a rider community with our Team Ride West club. Team Ride West began with one member on January 4th of 2010, and closes out the year with over 430 members - and a long list dozens of rides and club dinners to its credit. Dave also spearheads our comprehensive calendar of slide shows, seminars, and classes. Another important addition to customer service that you might not be aware of is Thadeus. Thadeus is our Service Porter, but he has taken that job description and blown it up to super large size. He is all over the dealership, cleaning bikes, making store repairs, delivering bikes, and helping out everyone every day. He does such fabulous work that some are now referring to him as "Thabulous." Technology & Communication:We have ramped up our efforts here by adding many features to our web site, such as a separate page for Team Ride West, "Featured Videos" and our new video library, an archive for previous editions of this newsletter, and the "Calenblog," an events calendar with new information entered just about every day. In addition, Team Ride West has an extensive monthly journal that is written in part by customers and goes out by e-mail. Our electronic newsletter has been updated with new features, like our "Safety Corner" articles, and we have installed technology that allows you to sign up for a seminar or class on the events page, giving everyone a better idea of who is coming and how many we should prepare for. Overall: The last five years have not been golden for the motorsports industry, as you know. As motorcycle sales shrink (or plummet) at most dealerships, we're grateful that our sales have not only remained stable, but have shown slight increases. Some of the credit for that can go to the efforts mentioned above, but most of it, of course, goes to you. Without customers - we do not exist! Has everything been perfect? No. Have we not made any mistakes? No. We are humans working with each other and with mechanical devices, so we may never reach a state of perfection - but we are sure going to continue to try! Thank you for your support, and let's ride into 2011 with enthusiasm!

What's Happening at Ride West BMW? With Bret Tkacs
Come join instructor Bret Tkacs for his "Adventure in Baja" slide show. January 6th 2011 here in Ride West BMW's show room at 7PM - 9:15PM. Many of us dream of traveling the world but are limited by time, funding, a job, families and other commitments. Come learn how to travel Baja with limited time and resources. Take notes as Bret talks about preparing for his trips, his lessons learned, and where to go. Learn about the culture and landscape of Baja Mexico and how you can go too while eating some delicious pizza! Yummmm!
Bret and his riding partner are both photographers so this is going to be an incredible show, don't miss this one! Bret has said to us the hardest part for preparing for this event is how he is going to thin out the 4000 photos he has so he can share the best with all of us.

The Safety Corner
Stupid Hurts! By David Hough
When I flipped over the handlebars of the Triumph Street Triple R, there wasn't much drama. One second I was squeezing the brakes to avoid a truck with no brake lights. The next second I was flying through the air and slamming into the pavement with a force that I knew was breaking bones. Another rider had been eager for me to ride his shiny new machine-perhaps to affirm his wise choice. I'd turned him down the day before, but during an impromptu ride that day he suddenly leaned the Triumph on the side stand and shouted for me to come over. Shouting, "let's swap", he trotted back to my machine, hopped on, and zoomed off down the highway before I could refuse. Read More... |

MotoQuest's North to Alaska Ride
With Phil Freeman
We all enjoyed the visit from Phil Freeman of MotoQuest in December. He provided three slide shows for us on successive evenings - touring Alaska, touring India, and touring Peru. He also shipped down from Alaska reindeer sausage, Alaskan salmon, and an assortment of cheeses. Yummy! All of these presentations were packed with info and humor, and were some of the best programs we have ever put on. They will definitely be repeated next December, so watch for them!
And...ta da! We have partnered with Phil in an upcoming tour called "North To Alaska." This tour will start at Ride West BMW in May and take in Deception Pass, the North Cascades, the Okanogan Valley, Liard Hot Springs, the Fraiser River Valley, the world famous Alcan Highway, Kluane National Park, and Wrangell -St.Elias National Park, among other scenic delights. Along the way there will be adventures galore, a lot of Gold Rush history, and photography opportunities and wildlife sightings to provide a lifetime of memories.
NOTE: This tour is limited to 10 riders! Tour dates are May 16th to 27th, 2011. For more information and to register, go to www.MotoQuestTours.com or call 1-800-756-1990 or 907-272-2777.

Enrolling in Classes and Seminars Our program of classes, slide shows, and seminars at Ride West continues to expand, and we are developing new systems to deal with the complexities involved. Our programs are held on Thursday evenings or Saturday mornings in most cases - with occasional exceptions. They are located either in our Club Room upstairs for smaller groups or in "Showroom #4" for the larger groups. Then it gets complicated - Some of these programs are free, some have a nominal $10 cost, and some are classes with fees set by the provider - from $60 on up. In all cases payment is made though the link on the day of the event on our events page at www.ridewest.com. In most cases the payment is to our Pay Pal account, and we then send the money on to the provider, or the charity involved. In some cases payment is made directly through the provider - again with a link on the day of the event on the web page. In actual practice, it is simpler than it sounds. Once enrolled in the class or seminar, you print your paper ticket and you are done! There are sixteen such events on the calendar for January and March, and more will be added! We do not open up registration for our events until two weeks prior, as that cuts down hassles with people whose plans change, etc. Here are the programs on tap for January. The web site will let you know if the program you are interested in is sold out. 1/06 Thursday Bret Tkacs - Baja Dual Sport Ride 7pm ($10) 1/08 Saturday David Hough seminar -Stupid Hurts! 10am (free) 1/13 Thursday Rick Wallace Seminar- Crash Management 7pm (free) 1/15 Saturday PSS Class Maintenance 1 9am ($95) 1/22 Saturday Rick Wallace Class - Crash Management 9am ($60) 1/29 Saturday Rick Wallace Class - Crash Management 9am ($60) 1/29 Saturday An evening with Helge Pederson 6-9pm ($10) |

What's new in the Parts Department?
An Update From Parts & Apparel!
Our online store has been updated - Many of you know the brands we carry in the store, but we also have a huge online selection of parts, accessories and riding gear that's always available at your fingertips 24 hours a day. One way to find what you're looking for is our new "search by application" feature. Simply type in your motorcycle make and model into the search box of the online store and see what happens! Or type something else like "Leather" or "Boots". You'll discover all types of items you might not have known existed. You can shop for them all at www.ridewest.com
Our online store has many items that are only available through our website. Conversely, many of the items we carry are a bit more exclusive and can only be found at our physical store, like Nexx Helmets for example.
You can also search our online store by catalog for great products by Gerbing, Ztechnik, BMW Apparel, and so on. We have many big distributor catalogs to browse from as well. So whether you're looking for BMW luggage, Alpinestars Boots, Motul Lubricants, Chrome goodies for a Goldwing, Hyabusa exhaust, First Gear over pants, you name it, you can probably find it in our online store.
Reminder - Gearswap Trade-in program - This winter is a great time to buy new riding gear, especially with our popular Gearswap program. Have a used jacket that needs updating? Perhaps a set of luggage for a bike you no longer have? Bring it by the shop and we'll give you a trade-in value towards new product (of course it needs to be in decent, usable condition). So give us a call or stop by for details and use Gearswap to get a break on the new riding gear and accessories you've always wanted! (not applicable towards most sale items)
New Products Shorai Batteries - Lithium - iron rechargeable motorcycle batteries? That's right! And they weigh on average about 7 pounds lighter than most stock BMW batteries. Coming soon are these amazing lightweight, long lasting, spill-proof, maintenance free replacements from Shorai. They have a longer service life than most batteries on the market and discharge so slowly, you could literally let your bike sit for a year (unless you have a draw like a clock or?) and still be able to start it like it was yesterday! We're just about done with our "new product evaluation" tests, and will begin stocking them within the next few weeks. Less weight, longer life, maintenance free? Sounds good to us! http://www.shoraipower.com/

Tech Tip of the Month
Lets Talk Tires
It's getting brighter every day now, but warm dry pavement is still months away. So, this month I'd like to talk about tires and tread depth. We here at Ride West are asked, daily, "When should I replace my tires?" "When the tread wears down to the 'tread bars'" is most often the answer. We need to understand the purpose of the tire "tread" which is water redirection and to tell you how much usable rubber you have left. If we wear all the rubber down past the grooves in it, then just the carcass remains. By carcass, I'm referring to what is left over after the usable, "sticky", rubber is gone. The carcass rubber won't flex and grip the road like the thicker treaded rubber, and if water is added to the equation it becomes downright dangerous.
Hydroplaning in a car is scary and dangerous and even more so on a motorcycle. If the tread or "grooves" are too worn to facilitate a path for the water to escape, then it will remain between our tires and the road, and that's what will lead to hydroplaning.
Tire "cupping" is also a factor in tire wear and in most cases normal, but also robs us of our precious contact patch. A lot is going on down there, and it takes just a few moments to inspect what's between you and that scratchy pavement. If you don't know what to look for or just want a second opinion, please just drive by our service alley and we'll give you an educated opinion. Don't forget to keep an eye out for all those things you have no control over such as leaves, branches and moss(my least favorite) on the road.
Have a great 2011 and keep the sticky side down!

A Message From Our Owners: Thank You For Your Support
The motorcycle industry in this country continues to be in free fall, off over 50% in revenue over the past two years. We have seen numerous dealerships close in our region throughout this time period and even more downsize, closing subsidiaries and reducing the square footage that the dealerships operate in. It has been brutal to the motorcycle dealerships in this region and across the country and it ain't over yet---not by a long shot. We predict that the fallout will continue well into 2011 and perhaps beyond. So given this trend, how are we doing at Ride West? The answer is, "quite well, frankly". We ended up 2010 about 10% over 2009 in revenue and forecast that 2011 will be about 14% over 2010. The reason for our ability to buck the trend is attributable to our customer base. Our customers normally have great credit or pay cash for their purchases. Consequently, we have been able to move forward while the bulk of the industry is hurting.
So everything is OK here. There have been many inquiries about our corporate health because we have had a lot of sales and promotions this past year. The impression to many is that we are in trouble and getting rid of everything. The truth is quite the opposite. As we looked at our situation this past year we saw opportunity; partly due to the weakness of some of our competitors and partly due to our operational capabilities. We wanted to do two things: first, we wanted to attract new customers to our store and, secondly we wanted to take care of our existing customers. So we had a lot of sales and promotions, and it worked. We looked at our inventory levels and felt that we were heavy in parts, accessories and apparel. Rather than return this stuff, get hit with restocking fees and freight to ship it back, we decided to offer to our customers at substantial savings. We realized that many customers are holding on to their old bikes instead of purchasing new ones, so we expanded our winter discounts for them throughout the winter. And we expanded our promotional calendar to try to get everyone involved in this activity, year around.
It must be working, for our sales are up and our future bright. And we can thank our wonderful customer base for this performance. So, thank you in a big way from the two of us and our employees. You are making it possible to employ over 20 people in the Seattle area. We hope to see you soon at one of the many activities that are ongoing here.
Ann and Keith Thye
