Greetings!

Happy Holidays To All
...

SwezeyElephantWe're entering one of the most hectic seasons of the year -for our store,  our personal lives - and probably yours!  It's always a fun time of year, and also a busy one - so let's all make sure we take time this year to appreciate where we are, how we got here, and all those who helped us along the way.

For me 2010 has been a particularly interesting year, full of spectacular highs and a few lows.  I have enjoyed our hard work and success at Ride West, and all of the many events I was privileged to ride. I attended the dealer introduction of the new BMW S 1000RR in Florida, and then a Keith Code Superbike School on the same bike - where I learned so much and improved immensely.  I was able to ride my "AltRider" BMW R 1200 GS to Salt Lake City and attend the WSBK race, with various side trip excursions on both pavement and dirt, and then the ride back - which featured some of the heaviest rain in my experience. I also enjoyed a couple of trips riding with my son - a new motorcyclist in our family - and it is hard to beat that.  In the fall I enjoyed two weeks of adventure and learning in South East Asia as my wife and I celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary.

SwezeyFishSpaOn the down side I spent far too much time with doctor's this year - first an injury to my shoulder from a skiing mishap (do not carry your camera in a chest pocket) and then a shoulder operation last week to repair damage after a pretty solid get-off at  the RawHyde dual sport event in the summer.  With those "misadventures" I had to miss the fabulous Rally in The Gorge AND the Sasquatch - but I will be there next year!

All year long I was surrounded by family, friends, and fabulous customers. I work with some incredible folks at what I think is truly an excellent dealership.  Judging by your feedback - many of you hold the same opinion, which is a wonderful gift for all of us.

Thank you all for your support,  and let's all have a terrific 2011!

Are You Locked Into Your Lane Position?
Dave Wendell2
Click Here to Read Dave's Bio

If you took the Basic or Novice Rider Course you may remember being told that there are essentially 3 lane positions you can choose from. In the left third of the lane, in the center of the lane, or in the right third of the lane. All of them have advantages and disadvantages depending on the conditions on that road at that time. Even though Instructors try very hard in most cases to make the point to their students that your lane position needs to be dynamic (changing all of the time), that message doesn't always come through as clearly as it should. Students who come back to us for more training beyond the Novice Rider Course are usually surprised when we talk about using the whole lane. They're usually "locked" into the left third of the lane, and that's where they spend all of their riding time.

The myth that we hear in almost every class, that students have usually been told by someone they know who rides, is: Read More...

A Letter From Helge Pedersen...

Dear Ride West BMW Readers,

Helge PedersenEvery time that I receive a new e-Newsletter from Ride West BMW it amazes me to read all the content this BMW dealer (my favorite) can produce. There are so many activities that if one were to do them all it would consume all of your free time and then some. There are a great variety of events and good education for motorcyclists at every level. We are very fortunate to have such a dedicated team right in our back yard.

With internet access in the most remote areas of the world, even in Southern Africa, Ride West BMW's e-Newsletter arrives in my inbox reminding me of the many activities happening in Seattle. It almost makes me homesick when I see that there will be a particular presentation or ride put on by Ride West BMW the following weekend. But then again, I know that there will be plenty more when I return home from Africa. Read More...

Team Ride West

How Does Team Ride West Work?

Our riders club,Team Ride West, has rocketed from a membership of 1 on January 4th to well over 400 today - less than a year later.  Team Ride West is managed by Dave Preston, and there are several key attributes of Team Ride West that make it much different from what most people think of as a "club." Here are some reasons we feel Team Ride West succeeds:

  • No dues. There is a registration form, and we request the member's first and last name and brand and model of motorcycle(s) ridden.  That's it.
  • Monthly dinner "meetings" at Café Veloce in Totem Lake on the 3rd Tuesday of each month.  These meetings are 99% social. The only thing resembling official business is Dave Preston asking new members to introduce themselves and then informing the group of rides and events coming up - total "meeting time" is less than 5 minutes.

All Roads Lead to... The Ride West Parking Lot!

Meet Valerie.  He dropped by in the midst of a one year extremely circuitous circuit of the globe. He began his adventure in August in the Ukraine (home - check the license plate), and has already made his way across Asia.  He had to alter his intended route over the mountains at one point because a crash left him riding with a cast on his broken leg.  After leaving us he was off to LA, and then North and East across the country, before continuing south to South America.

You can check out his progress at www.proidysvit.com - especially if you can speak Russian!

Parts & Apparel Update

schuberth helmetSchuberth Helmets - The verdict is in and the new Schuberth C3 modular helmet is a huge hit!  Thanks for all the amazing feedback so far for those of you who have purchased one.  As we thought, they are super quiet, very comfortable and the build quality is 100% German.  Need we say more? Supply is good now through Christmas, however we're still awaiting the ladies specific model (please be patient).  The latest news is we'll be partnering with South Sound Motorcycles and Schuberth North America to introduce the new C3 at the IMS show this year!  Most of the motorcycling community has yet to try one on so we're hoping to make a few new friends. Stop by the store for show ticket discount coupons while they last and we'll see you there (or that's the plan).

Comfort Accessories

Now that you've had your amazing new BMW for a while, you've probably thought of adding some comfort features to it.   A few popular accessories you might be interested in:  Bar risers, foot pegs, windscreens?

We now carry Verholen, Moto Techniques, Touratech, Ztechnik and Heli - How do you improve comfort while retaining the style of your late model BMW?  We have some amazing options to take the edge off on those long journeys.  Whether it be sore shoulders, cramped up legs or a combination of both, you may need a set of handle bar risers or foot peg lowers to stay out there all day.   Maybe you just want to escape the wind.  A new windscreen by Ztechnik just might take the edge off.  Cruise control?  How about a throttle lock to relax your right arm for a few miles?  We have plenty of ideas and options that will "dial in" your bike to fit you perfectly!

Another Black Friday Has Passed

Thanks to everyone who attended our Black Friday / Saturday this past weekend. There were some great deals to be had and there's still a great selection of sale boots, helmets and such.  Keep an eye out next year for our biggest after Thanksgiving sale EVER!

What can we do better?  What do we really need to stock? Thanks for reading! Your feedback is always appreciated!

Service Labor Specials

This month it's all about saving you money! We are a month-and-a-half into our winter specials, and we have some really good bargains that you should take advantage of while you can. Along with the fantastic savings, we are also offering free pick-up for repairs exceeding $250. If you only require minor repairs, we may still be able to help you out with transportation.  For instance, if we are already in your area picking up another motorcycle we can fit two in our fully-enclosed sprinter van. Please don't hesitate to call or e-mail us in Service; I'm sure we can figure out how to get your motorcycle into the shop for needed work during these slower (colder, icier, wetter) months. We can stay busy and you can save money. Ride West is committed to great service work year-round, so keep us in mind for any two-wheeled vehicle repairs or modifications you might fancy. Stay safe and Happy Holidays!!

A Message From Our Owners:

Thank You For Your Support

Keith & Ann Thye

To about 90% of the population we are an odd lot, riding around on two wheels.  Many people think we are crazy and taking our lives in our hands every time we climb on.  But we know better, don't we?  We know that although the motorcycle statistics that people see are rather startling, they do not really apply to us because we are careful riders, not doing the crazy teenager stuff.  Plus we ride safe motorcycles safely.  Or do we?  Okay, we have ABS brakes, electronic adjustable suspension, computers that tell us the bike's performance characteristics, etc.  And when was the last time you took your eyes off of the road for a second or two to adjust the radio, or punch something in to the GPS, or mess around with a piece of equipment on the bike?  That is all it takes to send you into a situation that you do not want to experience.  And then, of course, there is the other guy that is really doing the crazy stuff (cell phones, texting, eating the proverbial hamburger which he has slopped all over his lap, etc.).  There are a lot of things we can do to make our riding experience safer.  You know what they are; here are a few refreshers.

There was an article on TV the other night that talked about the age of tires that people are purchasing and putting on their automobiles.  They did a clandestine investigation of tires in dealerships and purchased online and the age of the tires.  It was nasty.  The dealerships fared better than the online purchases, but in too many of the instances the tires were five or six years old.  This is not good.  Tires breakdown over time and at Ride West we do not advocate installing a tire over three years old.  Tires that are purchased elsewhere and brought here for mounting over this age necessitate a disclaimer on our part.  We have seen these tires cause problems.  Of course we would suggest that everyone purchase tires from the dealership to ensure their performance but this does not always happen.

How about "deer alerts", those  gizmos you stick on to the bumper of your car or somewhere on your motorcycle that supposedly will alert deer in your path that you are coming.  There is plenty of controversy regarding these devices, but the authors of this missive will not own a bike without them.  Half a million miles on two wheels with and without them have convinced us that they work---and saved us a few times from what could have been nasty.  At any rate, for around thirty bucks it is cheap insurance and great peace of mind.

Now this is not a safety issue, but what we consider really good advice. Hide a key somewhere on your bike.  We sell key hiders for $3.99, but even if you use a piece of duct tape, hide a key on your bike.  We have had too many calls from customers that are stranded in some remote part of the country (or world) because they lost their key.  We always get the excuse that "I carry a spare in my wallet", or "my wife has a spare in her purse", or some such thing, but inevitably, the wallet is stolen, the purse left in the hotel room, etc.  By the time we get the key thing sorted out, their trip itinerary is ruined.  So please hide a key on the bike somewhere.
