Greetings!
NEW! Sign Up for Events Online!
Hello there - Dave Swezey here. Actually, not here at all, but enjoying a vacation with my wife as our celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. This month's Ride West BMW newsletter, including these words, has been prepared by Dave Preston and Nicole Turner, our new Receptionist/Media Assistant. I hope you like their work.
Something we're very excited about because we've been working toward it for some time is - Our New System For Signing Up for Slide Shows and Seminars! This system allows you to sign up for our many Ride West events over the coming months. By going to the Events Calendar on our web site and finding the day and description of the event, you can click through and reserve your spot, and if a fee is needed you can pay via credit card. As most of our slide shows and seminars sell out - many of them within a day of being announced, visiting our events page early and often will be important. Of course you can still call us or make a reservation in person.
To be sure, this is a new program, and we have already found (or created?) some glitches. We are working with the program provider to create solutions, but this system is already faster and more reliable. Please bear with us while Nicole makes it perfect! Dave Swezey General Manager

The Safety Corner
It's All About Me! Kyle McCarty
When taking my first rider training course I was amazed how much I didn't know. Even after riding for years, it quickly became apparent I had poor skills, inadequate techniques and an undeveloped awareness of rider risk. My instructor, Bruce Thomas, was very patient and understanding as he enabled me to develop. More significantly, he helped me realize that... "It's all about me!"Bruce helped me realize that I, alone, was responsible for my rider risk. I was accountable to develop my rider motor-skills and riding techniques. I needed to know my limits and ride within them. It's my choices, and mine alone, that allow me to be safe(r). Simply put, no one cares more about 'me' than me! Read More...

Event Reminder!
A Special Evening (At South Sound Motorcycles) In 1963, two guys dropped out of college for a year and embarked on an eight month odyssey from Portland, Oregon to Pucon, Chile, about as far South as one could travel on anything resembling a decent road in those days. The mode of travel consisted of two 1958 BMW R50's (this is, of course, LONG before such a thing as a GS) and the style of travel was meager, since the entire trip was accomplished for $1,200 apiece.
This is an adventure that you will be able to share with the participants - 47 years later - as they will be together presenting a slide show (yes, a true old fashioned slide show---just like they made back in 1963) at South Sound BMW on Saturday evening, November 13. Their adventures and the conditions that they experienced were life changing, and have to be seen to be appreciated. Please join us for a special presentation by Keith Thye, as many of you know, President of Ride West BMW and South Sound BMW, and his partner on this trip, Dave Yaden. Dave is a lifelong Lake Oswego resident (outside of Portland, Oregon) and a well known figure in the political landscape and educational circles in Oregon. A book has been written about this journey and Dave and Keith will be available for signings and books will be available for purchase. Their presentation will begin at 7:00 PM in the South Sound showroom and, with an intermission, conclude at around 10:00 PM. Ticket prices are $12 and include hors d'oeuvres and refreshments. Please join us for this exclusive engagement. Call the South Sound Parts Department at 1-800-303-1838 to purchase tickets.

Team Ride West
What's New With Team Ride West?
 | | TRW goes to Mt. Baker. Join Us Next Time! | Team Ride West is our riding club, and has surged from a membership of 2 on January 5th to over 400 today. Team Ride West features dozens of rides, social dinners, special deals on classes and other opportunities that come along, and (perhaps best of all) no meetings and no dues! Although some members limit their enjoyment to the news obtained from frequent e-mails, over 140 members have attended one or more rides and events in this first year. If you would like to be a member, or just want to ask a question, please ask our Team Ride West Manager Dave Preston. His e-mail is team@ridewest.com This month Team Ride West hosts a charity ride on November 20th called the "Chilly Turkey." Dave creates the route instructions, and entrants, who are asked to donate $10 or more, follow the directions and pause from time to time to find the answers to questions. The ride ends at the Omega Restaurant in Granite Falls, where entrants who have qualified for the door prizes with their answers order some food and await the prizes - which are usually worth far more than the entry fees! Registration opens Wednesday , the 20th at 9:30am. The "Chilly Turkey", like it's sister event held each year in March, raises funds for Riders for Health. For more on Riders for Health and why we support them, check out this recent article: Health Care and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance from the New York Times web site. We are grateful to BMW of North America and Riders for Health for a cornucopia of terrific door prizes available for this event.Dave PrestonManager- Team Ride Westteam@ridewest.com

Just Ridin' Through!
All Roads Lead to... The Ride West Parking Lot!
Say hello to Kevin and Raquel. They began their ride in Denver, and Kevin's first experience with carrying a passenger was when they left - on their way to Prudhoe Bay! They stopped by on their way back home to Los Angeles completing 11,000 miles of on and off-road two-up camping travel. The pictures show them comparing travel notes with Colin Busch, who has been a real resource for them. Kevin and Raquel are using this "little ride" as a test. Now that they know their equipment works and their skills are proven, their next adventure will be a several-year long odyssey around the world - Peru, then Africa, and India, and... And later the same day, Grant dropped by! Grant is from South Africa, and has been traveling for the past year. After a couple of days in Seattle he was to be off to New York before the fall weather got too dire, to sell the bike and return to South Africa, Along the way he has journeyed extensively in South America, including two different segments of time on long rides with Colin. It is possible that Colin is replacing Kevin Bacon among adventure riders! His Panniers- repaired in Chile with putty and paint!
Wyoming: 5500 miles, 1000 of that on dirt and gravel roads; Dionne. After a couple of weeks of riding with my husband Jay, and our friend Eric from Seattle to Wyoming on the back roads, my two partners turned around, headed for Seattle again while I stayed in Sheridan. I spent a month in an artist residency in the middle of nowhere, focused on researching American history sites, riding all over, and doing work in my studio.

I often rode for hours with no car, no house, no other human being in sight. However there was always an abundance of wild life that seemed ready to jump on the road in front of me! Bighorn sheep, pronghorn, deer, mule deer, white-tailed deer, great horned owls, turkeys, great blue herons, bald eagles, ospreys, hawks, vultures, rattlesnakes, wild horses and many, many cows. It is not often that I have an opportunity to read on the newspaper's front page "Moose on Highway 14A" as was the case the first day I arrived. It felt like I was riding through a painting - rows after rows of sensual ochre rolly pollies; outcrops of red rock; deep colorful canyons; complete with dramatic blue mountains in the background. The road through the Bighorn Mountains is a meandering ribbon of tight twistees - a pure delight!

About Our Staff...
Who are these people?
In the last two issues of this e-zine we've introduced you to the folks who work with you on the main floor of Ride West BMW in the Sales, Parts, Accessories, Apparel, and other departments. If you missed the September and/or October issues Click Here to go to our e-newsletter archive and see the rest of our staff!. This month we take a look at three more departments
Mark Eddy; Service Manager Mark is our Service Manager and has been here for the past eight years. For most of that time he was a service technician and still retains his Master Certification with BMW. As Service Manager, he is charged with maintaining a positive atmosphere in service for both staff and customers, dealing with myriad requests from the Sales Department, keeping track of hours available, and making a profit if at all possible. Balancing human needs and desires against mechanical realities and the constraints of time available makes his job one of the most demanding in the dealership. In his spare time Mark likes to ride motorcycles - something of a theme here don't you think? - and has represented Ride West BMW at the Desert 100 race the past two years. Dana Marshall; Technician
Dana has worked here for 7 years as a technician. He is probably the most serious guy you will ever meet. All business, all the time. No jokes. Ever. You can tell by his picture :)
Sandra Kopriva; Technician Sandra has been spinning wrenches in the service department for almost five years. She is comfortable working on any motorcycle, and rates the R 1200GS model as her favorite BMW model to work on, while the S 1000RR is her favorite model to ride! You'll notice Sandra late on almost any afternoon riding away from work on her sport bike - pretty much no matter what the weather is doing!
Ben Semer; Technician Ben has worked in our service department for seven years, as a technician and arguably the last two have been the most memorable. Less than two years ago Ben became interested in physical fitness and running, and as the result is a person who has lost about eighty pounds (!) He also competes regularly in triathlon events!.
Brian Wendorf; Technician
Brian has worked here for thirteen years in total, and in his spare he time enjoys his wife and children and his fondness for vintage BMW motorcycles and cars. Eric Gillon; Service Advisor/ Warranty Administrator Eric is one of the folks you actually get to speak to, as he is stationed at the front counter. His knowledge of BMW parts and mechanical systems is pretty much unparalleled, and he has taken and aced virtually every course available through the on-line BMW training facility. Having spent his youth first in New Jersey and then Atlanta, Eric very much enjoys hiking and the other "usual" outdoor activities in this wonderful area.
Cameron Hiller; Service Advisor Cameron has worked at Ride West BMW for three years, and in all probability will be the person who greets you at the Service Department counter. His pleasant personality and ability to communicate with customers who have a concern - if they did not they would probably not be at his counter - and with the techs and management makes a very difficult job look like it is easy. It is not. Off the clock Cameron enjoys riding all of the BMW models, and lists the R1200 GS Adventure as his favorite. In addition, he has probably the widest range of interests imaginable - sailboats and monster trucks - in particular "Gravedigger," should give you an idea of the breadth of his interes ts!David Preston; Team Ride West/ Media & Events Manager David came to Ride West last January, following ten years of learning his craft with another dealer. He enjoys riding pretty much all of the BMW demo bikes we have - depending on what is needed, and one of them is usually sharing space in his garage with the Triumph Speed Triple left over from his previous life. David would love to add you to our riding club - Team Ride West - and you can do that with a quick e-mail to him at team@ridewest.com. You can also read what he optimistically refers to as his "thoughts" each month in Sound Rider magazine at www.soundrider.com. David Lenton; Insurance & Finance Manager David has been a big part of Ride West for almost 8 years now, and in that time has rotated through many managerial roles. He has been in charge of Marketing, has worked as the Sales Manager, and has a lot of experience in Finance and Insurance (F&I) - often all at the same time. As our operation has settled into something close to organization, David has been able to take on managing just one department - what a concept! - and is currently our Finance and Insurance Manager. David has a lot of musical talent including experience as a professional entertainer, but these days he focuses his off-hours time on pursuing his sports fanaticism, and the many varied activities of his beloved wife and two daughters.
Loretta Barr; Insurance Loretta is in her first year at Ride West, and in addition to helping you with your insurance needs she also assists with receptionist duties, putting on events, and anything else that needs doing! In her spare time she enjoys taking care of her two cats and a dog, and getting outside for hiking and camping adventures. She states with true northwest confidence that she "loves the rain." Thaddeus Tucker; Lot Porter +++
Thaddeus is referred to as our "Lot Porter," but a more accurate description would be "Lot Porter Plus, Plus, Plus." Thaddeus is a recent addition to our staff, and has expanded the duties and responsibilities of his job very rapidly - to everyone's delight. Thaddeus delivers bikes to customers, other dealers, and between our own two dealerships, as well as cleaning bikes, moving bikes, setting up showroom displays, keeping the dealership and grounds looking good, and helping out anywhere and everywhere - all of the time. Thaddeus is that rare individual who does not sit back and wait to be told what to do - he prefers to look around and do what needs to be done - immediately. We are all a lot better for his efforts. For motorcycles, he had a (recently sold) KTM, owns a Kawasaki KLR and is looking - of course - at adding a BMW to his family stable!

Tech Tip of the Month
Before You Modify Your Bike...
Accessories, we love them and need them, but do we recognize their impact completely? About 90% of the motorcycles I see have been modified from their "stock" form, my own included. Sometimes, the modifications are for purpose, sometimes for necessity, sometimes individuality. I love making motorcycles special, unique, but sometimes there are costs we should all be aware of before starting to modify our rides.
There are extra costs associated with removing then reinstalling accessories because they are in the way of a particular service operation. Every operation the Service Department "quotes" is based on a completely stock motorcycle, so any accessory we have to remove and then reinstall would be more time, therefore more costly. Knowing this, some thought should be put into positioning our accessories so they have the least amount of impact on future operations. With many of these products, there aren't options for where to place them (crash bars, covers, etc) however with most of the electrical components we have a lot of say in where they're placed and how they fit. Making the accessory look like it belongs and won't get in the way should be the install goal.
Whether your motorcycle comes in the shop for service or a roadside repair becomes necessary, the extra thought and effort will be noticed immediately. We have entire catalogues full of gadgets, some good, some great! Don't hesitate to ask for our opinions and experiences with them; chances are some good ideas will come from it.

A Message From Our Owners:
Thank You For Your Support
People often compare the motorcycle business to the automotive business, which upon reflection, seems reasonable. From a business perspective, however, there are several major differences. Motorcycle dealerships need more building than parking areas as our bikes are normally displayed undercover. Auto dealerships need a few cars in the showroom with most of their inventory displayed outside. Auto dealerships rely on their service areas to a much greater extent than do motorcycle dealerships. And since they are able to charge higher labor rates their service areas contribute more to their operating budget than in motorcycle dealerships. The parts departments in automotive dealerships primarily supply the service areas (when was the last time you went to a new car dealership to purchase parts?). Motorcycle shops sell a lot of parts over the counter because bike customers often do their own work. Further, motorcycle retailers normally have extensive accessory and apparel departments whereas automobile stores have just a small display of such items.
In most families, cars are a necessity; motorcycles are a recreational vehicle. Yes, many of us commute by motorcycle and use them in our daily lives, but we are BMW motorcyclists. Most two-wheelers park them in the garage through the inclement seasons. Which leads, of course, to the largest difference of all: revenue. Most auto dealerships well exceed the average motorcycle dealership in terms of money through the till. But what goes around comes around. Their costs are normally much higher too, for land, labor, flooring (the costs associated with maintaining the inventory---we do not own all of the vehicles, the bank does and they charge us monthly for it), debt, etc.
Where we are going with this is that it is all relative. A friend of ours once owned a number of grocery stores and operated them for many years. He sold them off and retired. But it was short lived. An ardent snow skier, he discovered a ski resort that was in financial difficulty and ended up purchasing it. After an exhausting day of trying to keep up with him on the slopes, we asked him what the main difference was between the ski resort business and the grocery business. He looked at us and said, "You know , it is all relative. It's a matter of money in and money out. The hard part is, how much of it you can keep". But then he got contemplative and after several moments uttered, "No wait, there is a major difference. The grocery business is work---this is fun".
This is sort of the way we look at the motorcycle business. Owning an automotive dealership has absolutely no interest to the authors of this missive. That just sounds like a lot of work. On the other hand, having been a part of this industry, and this specific dealership in particular, has been a lot of fun for the past fifteen years. And it still is.
Ann and Keith Thye
