What's new in the Parts Department Featured Products
What's New?
S1000RR Accessories - Yes, even more S1000RR accessories, including CRG lightweight levers (in standard, folding, and short lengths), Yoshimura fender eliminators, engine case protectors, spools, frame sliders and bar ends. Oh, did we mention? Service manual on CD!
Bike-to-Bike Communication Kits - Last month we introduced the new Scala Rider G4 Bluetooth kits. This month we add the easy to use Motocomm Bike-to-Bike Kits. At around $150.00 each, you can buy enough kits for the entire group! Each kit contains everything you need for Bike-to-Bike communication including the headset, fixed or boom mic, GMRS radio (by Cobra), charger and waterproof push to talk button. The extended range and clarity of these GMRS systems is all you need to stay in touch with your fellow bikers.
Helmet Talk - Speaking of communications, how is your helmet looking, or smelling? If the interior of your lid is crusty, or funky, it should be an indication that it's time to start thinking about a new brain bucket. There are plenty of brands to choose from (over 100 in fact) in just about every price range. It's reasonable to assume that at least some of these helmets are made in the same factories, yet they are all very different. Because of this, we carry only a few select brands of helmets for their safety, build quality, reputation, fit and warranty (we stock quality helmets priced from $149 to around $700). So what's the difference? First and foremost, don't skimp on a helmet, no matter where you buy it. At the minimum your helmet should be DOT approved (it has to, to be legal). However, not all DOT, ECE or Snell approved helmets are created equal. Nor do these labels say much about each helmet manufacturers' build quality. So, like anything made, you get what you pay for. A good helmet should protect you, and like any other piece of gear it should be made to last. Secondly, it needs to fit like a glove, and fit your head shape. Sure helmets break-in over time, but the better fit you can start with, the more comfortable, safer and quieter it will be. Most helmet manufacturers size their helmets by centimeters so knowing your head size will help you in your helmet search. Also different brands fit different shape heads. For example, Shoei Helmets may fit a round oval head shape better than a Nolan Helmet, and so on. Being properly fitted for a helmet can be as important as the helmet itself. And buying your helmet from an authorized retailer insures you will be covered if your investment needs attention. What makes a helmet wear out? The expanded polystyrene (foam) inside a helmet acts as a crumple zone if you have to use it. Once the helmet has bounced up and down on your head for 50,000 miles, it gets compressed, meaning it can no longer compress when you need it to. In fact, as the helmet gets older, it looses its ability all together. So stop by and have us check out your helmet! While you're here check out the new Arai RXQ, Shoei RF1100 and Scorpion EXO-700. And by the way, we might be getting Schuberth back this fall. Stay tuned. Thanks for reading! What's on your mind? What can we do better? What do we really need to stock? Your feedback is always appreciated! |

Tech Tip of the Month
What's Bugging You?
What I have this mo nth is a cautionary tale about bugs, rocks and other debris that can cause some issues if not removed in a timely fashion. I realize the usual reason for washing our motorcycles is to make them sparkle and shine, but there are more practical and technical reasons for thorough washing that we should keep in mind. One is radiators and/or oil coolers, the other is fork seals. Radiators can get plugged with bugs, rocks, tar and anything else you're riding through. This can lead to hotter engine temperatures and overheating if left unchecked. The easiest and most effective way to see if your radiator is plugged is to shine a light from the backside and look at it from the front. If the light can't make it's way through, then cooling air can't either. Hopefully a gentle stream of water will wash away the debris. DO NOT USE HIGH PRESSURE; it will bend the fragile cooling fins and block the airflow for good.
Believe it or not, crusty bugs on fork tubes can damage your fork seals so wash those off as soon as possible for your forks' sake.
Armed with this information and a sense of childlike wonder (ewwww, bug guts!), go grab your wash mitts-- clean one for the windshield and panels, an old crusty one for the wheels -- and lets get those hard to reach places free of debris!

A message from our owners: Lessons We've Learned!
The two of us (Keith and Ann) have ridden on two wheels, two up, across this country many times (seventeen, we think) as well as north to south, across the land, probably as many. In June we took a couple of the grandkids on a week long guided historical trip from Philadelphia to Washington D.C. Ann flew back with the kids and I (Keith) decided to ride and visit a number of dealerships along the way. I took eleven days getting there and four returning, obviously visiting most of the dealerships going East. The ride was enjoyable as well as educational. Getting to DC was via a wandering route, with dealership stops in Missoula, Salt Lake, Loveland, CO., Houston, Atlanta, Jessup MD and Fredricksburg, VA. Eleven days and 5,000 hot and humid miles. I remained in my rain gear for most of the return trip. But wonderful nonetheless---after all, I was on a motorcycle (2009 K1200LT). The return was more direct, at four days and 3,000 miles with dealership stops in Idaho and Spokane. These dealership visits are always good for me (and all of our dealership personnel) because we reinforce what we need to do better and what we are doing well. One can learn from seeing things done the wrong way as well as the right way, and we continually learn from both.
Here are some riding observations from this trip: If this country does not implement some sort of serious penalties for driving while texting, then watch for the death rate to increase dramatically. Cell phone use is one thing, but the texting is just ridiculous. Come to think of it, what I thought was texting may have been people concentrating on their GPS's while driving, which can be equally as dangerous. At Ride West we have always stressed to riders that a map on top of a tank bag can be dangerous to your health, because just a few seconds taking your eyes off of the road can send you into the ditch. GPS units are probably worse because you have all of those neat little buttons and screens to mess with.
The mid-West states, and many on the East coast, do not require helmets, and I do not understand people that ride without a full face helmet. We suffered a very serious crash seven years ago and neither of us would be writing this article without the proper gear, particularly full face helmets. Motorcycle fatality statistics are not encouraging, but having the right protection could improve them substantially. And then there are the flip-flop, shorts and t-shirt crowd screaming down the highway on their crotch-rockets. Hopefully most of these riders will survive and aspire to a safe, sensible BMW and drive accordingly.
Now just a few words about highway manners. What ever happened to turn signals? It's like the car manufacturers discontinued installing them. And the further East you go, the more people tend to drive the outside, or passing, lane, including truckers, so you end up weaving through traffic to get to where you need to go. Motorcycle awareness by drivers? Forgetaboutit. So the moral to this journey is: Pay attention, dress properly (always, even on those beautiful 85 degree days), don't mess around (maps, GPS, etc.) when you should be watching the road, and watch for the other guy, 'cause it is probably him/her rather than you that will cause the problem
