July 2010 - Ride West BMW e-newsletter
Greetings!

These ARE The Good Old Days!

NOW is the time of year you've been waiting for - through a seemingly endless cold and wet winter and spring. NOW is the time to make sure the bike is shiny and in perfect "lets go riding" condition, (can our Service Department help?) and NOW is the time to get on the road.

We are geared up for riding, our bikes are ready- and we hope you're with us!

General Manager Dave Swezey just completed an adventure with Keith Code's California Superbike School on the S1000RR.  For an "onboard" ride check out the Video. Dave Preston took on an Advanced Street Skills class and then led over three dozen customers to Lolo Pass and back for a long weekend, while Swezey was off playing in the dirt with friends at the RawHyde event.

Heading into July, things begin to heat up - literally and metaphorically.

If you're looking for another bike, or to sell one, put July 9th and 10th on your calendar and highlight them in Dayglo pink!  Those are the dates for the second Ride West Bike Swap of the year - a great opportunity to sell, purchase, or simply look at the bikes on offer and make an assessment of the market.

The following weekend many will be riding to Redmond, Oregon for the massive BMW MOA National Rally -are you going?

The weekend after that the party continues with the WSBMWR Rally in Menlo.  We'll have representatives riding to both, and please let us know if you would like to hook up for a road trip group ride.

You can finish off the month in style at Sound Rider magazine's "Rally In The Gorge" from July 29th to August 1st in Stevenson - right on the Columbia river. Go to www.soundrider.com  for the busy schedule of activities, rides, seminars  - and two evenings of door prizes! Dave Preston will be leading a group to Stevenson on Thursday, July 29th, (by a back roads route, of course), and returning Sunday. August 1st.  Keith Thye and Dave Swezey will also be there with our display.

And all of that is just in the month of July. Looking further ahead, you can join Dave Swezey on Sound Rider magazine's "Sasquatch Ride" from August 23rd - 27th. This dual sport ride, in only its second year, is becoming a classic. You can find details at www.soundrider.com.

In September, Dave Preston and a couple of dozen folks are off to Bend, Oregon for the final Team Ride West multi-day ride of the year.  This terrific weekend will feature a scenic cruise to Bend on Friday and back home on Sunday. Saturday offers a variety of terrific ride routes, and Saturday evening lures most of the group to Bend's varied, active, and social night scene, while others lounge in the park at the motel and share tales and pictures from the day.

All of these are in addition to the rides we put on each month with our Team Ride West club, and in addition to the fine rides and meetings put on by WSBMWR.  Add it all up and you have a simple conclusion:

You NEED to get on out there and have some adventures!

Of course, nothing makes those adventures better than a brand new BMW motorcycle.  Supplies of some of the 2010 models are getting pretty tight, (as in almost none left), so call us with your needs and we'll try to help out.

Let's ride!

A "must read" by David HoughFor great reading, we recommend the many books by David Hough on practical motorcycle riding, for sale at Ride West BMW. After reading a couple of them, you may have the urge to get out there and learn in a real world environment.

In April Dave Swezey and Dave Preston attended a PSSOR Adventure Camp, focusing on dual sport riding. Dave Swezey has just done a track school with the famous Keith Code Superbike school.  Last month Dave Preston learned a lot - and had a terrific time - at a Puget Sound Safety Advanced Street Skills at Pacific Raceways.

Both of us will soon be taking the just out OSC (On Street Class) Check ot the all new offered by both WMST and PNWMS.  If these two riders are still learning - with over 90 years of riding experience between them, perhaps you too should invest in your riding education! Ask us any questions you may have, or let us direct you to where you can sign up for a class.

High octane fuel and ethanol

"Fuel" for thought!

Ethanol fuel additiveThroughout the winter Ride West's Service Department, along with our customers, has been questioning the North American fuel supply and it's additives. The type of fuel we put in our machines can have a real effect on our motorcycles' performance. It seems that low-octane fuel, as well as additives like ethanol are causing adverse affects.

Our BMW motorcycles are designed and tuned using high octane fuel that doesn't contain U.S. additives like ethanol. We can't do anything about the additives that are in our fuel, but we can and need to make sure we use top tier fuel suppliers and high octane fuels to keep the fuel injection systems working as well as they can. I know it's not always possible but should be in your mind when you fill up and the first thing to come to mind if your fuel injection system throws a hiccup your way.

BMW recommends having your fuel system cleaned every year - they provided Ride West with a dynamic fuel injector cleaning system. We also have available a fuel injector cleaning solution that you add to your fuel as added prevention of problems. So next time your fuel is running low, choose to fill up wisely.  Every time we call BMW about any runability issue, the first culprit they look to is the fuel that has been supplied to the tank.

Have fun this month; think warm, dry pavement and clean fuel systems.

A message from our owners:Ann & Keith Thye

How time flies when you are having fun!

How time flies when you are having fun!  Truly hard to believe that we have been at this for fifteen years now. It was July 17th 1995 when Ann signed the Purchase and Sale Agreement that gave her the ownership of what had previously been Buckingham BMW.  (Ann and Keith are married; Ann owns the business and Keith is the president).  The dealership was housed in a leased, funky, wooden building of only 4,000 square feet in the Green Lake area, across the street from the bicycle shop.  It was the late 1990's and growth was rapid.  We were outgrowing the facility and it seemed like we spent most of our time moving bikes around because of the limited space.  And then there were the parking meters; a row of motorcycle parking spaces outside the door with a meter on each space---and the meter control people would come by several times a day always assured that they could write a few easy tickets.  And as well, the landlord had indicated that he wanted to tear the building down and build six floors of condo's, which is now a reality.

So we started looking for a new site for the dealership in early 1999.  Each week for a year and a half we looked at at least one building or vacant property to build on.  It took a long time because, as you can imagine, in an urban area with the prices that commercial property sells for (remember, this was the dot.com heyday), an affordable (to us) facility that would suit our needs was hard to come by.  We were fortunate to find the building we are now in.  It is only a mile from the old shop, with the same phone number and area code, and is large enough, at nearly 20,000 square feet, to handle our operation.  We were a bit concerned about a three story building, with service one floor below the parts department, but after spending a day at Eastside Harley Davidson (which has a similar situation) we were confident that it would work for us.  And it has.

That building move was ten years ago and it seems like it was yesterday.  And those ten years (actually, the entire fifteen years) have been good to us.  Ride West has been a top ten performer in terms of new motorcycle sales for BMW for nearly every one of those years, and we can thank our loyal customer base for that.  You (our customers) continue to support us with new bike sales and an ever growing service and parts business.  And many of you have now purchased your personal insurance products through us.  This all makes us a stronger and stronger dealership and ensures that we will be around in the future to take care of your every motorcycle need.  So, thank you for your wonderful support over the past fifteen years and we look forward to being here for you many more years into in the future

Ann and Keith Thye
