| June 2010 - Ride West BMW e-newsletter | |
|
|
|
Greetings!
We're on the road and attending events!
Ride West is not the sort of dealership to sit back and wait for customers to drop by. We prefer to be riding - with each other and with customers! At the end of May Keith Thye and Dave Swezey are off for a jaunt of several days, with Dave stopping in Salt Lake City to meet up with Dave Preston and over two dozen customers who either flew in or rode in for the SBK round at Miller Motorsports Park. Meanwhile, Keith keeps heading east to a national dealer meeting on the east coast - riding a 2010 LT. How many dealer principals do that, as opposed to flying?
UPDATE FROM THE ROAD: Sunday 5/30 Miller Raceway, Salt Lake City This months newsletter is our first one produced while touring (gotta love Wi-fi and a Netbook that fits in my saddle bag!) The BMW S1000RR riders are doing pretty well. The weather is suppose to hit almost 80 on race day after lots of wind and very cool temps. I think Ride West has the best representation of all the BMW dealers here so thanks to Dave Preston and the entire group (almost 30 Team Ride West Ambassadors!) who are cheering on Troy and Ruben.
We hope you can join our staff for a selection of road events all summer long. Riding with customers lets us know what works for you and what does not, and what you want to see from your dealership. Here is a small smattering of the events we're inviting you to. 1. Team Ride West club rides. A couple of Saturdays a month Dave Preston leads 10 - 30 customers on Saturday rides from our store on Lake City Way NE in Seattle to all sorts of interesting destinations and events. You can check out the Team Ride West schedule on the events page of our www.ridewest.com web site, or simply send Dave an e-mail at team@ridewest.com and he'll be happy to add you to the group. Team Ride West has no dues, and has grown from one member on January 5th to over 250 today - 5 months later! 2. Lolo Pass (Or Not). June 25th - 27th This is a three day Team Ride West event that stays Friday and Saturday night in Clarkston, Washington. Saturday is devoted to rides of choice - over Lolo Pass and back, a wonderful collection of side roads, or a variety of dual sport opportunities. Rooms are needed for Friday and Saturday - June 25th and 26th, 2010, and almost all of those going will have reservations are the Best Western River Tree Inn in Clarkston. Dave has almost two dozen people signed up for this one already! 3. Sport Bike Northwest - July 29th to August 1st. Ride West will once again be a sponsor and a significant presence at this Sound Rider magazine event. Go to www.soundrider.com for event schedules. Dave Preston will be leading a group ride to the event on Thursday, July 29th, (by a back roads route, of course), returning Sunday. August 1st. Keith Thye and Dave Swezey will also be there with our display. 4. Sasquatch Ride (dual sport) August 23rd - 27th. This Sound Rider dual sport ride is becoming a classic in only its second year. You can find details at www.soundrider.com . Dave Swezey will be riding - care to join him? 5. Bend! September 10 - 12th are the dates for the final Team Ride West multi-day ride of the year. A terrific weekend will feature a scenic cruise to Bend, Oregon on Friday and on Sunday. Saturday offers a variety of terrific ride routes, and Saturday evening lures most of the group to Bend's varied, active, and social night scene, while others lounge in the park at the motel and share tales and pictures from the day. The Great Northwest is a fabulous place to ride a motorcycle. Get on out there and have some adventures with us! The Ride West Difference!
Say you're chatting with friends about all of the events and rides you are enjoying with Team Ride West. Say further that these friends ask you, "What make's Ride West different?" When you find yourself in that situation, here are concepts we would thank you for putting across - concepts I will refer to as the "Magnificent Seven." 1. With Team Ride West, more rides, dinners, and events than anyone else. 2. More in-store sales, swap meets, seminars, classes, etc. than anyone else. 3. Ability to purchase insurance for your bike, home, and auto - all in-house. 4. More demo bikes than anyone else. 5. Encouragement to take longer demo rides than any one else. 6. Service Department happy and capable to work on any brand. 7. Wide assortment of used bikes of all brands. And remember, if you bring in a new customer who purchases a new BMW - YOU get a $200 reward. Oops - that's #8!

| Ride West BMW is proud to sponsor the first annual:
RawHyde is heading to Washington to host the Pacific NW Adventure Rally
RALLY DETAILS:
When: June 24th - 27th 2010 Registration opens at 3pm Thurs. the 24th
Where: 11mi. N of Leavenworth, WA.
How Much: $299
What Is Included?: 8 great meals plus drinks (dinner on Thursday through Breakfast Sunday), an event jersey, an 8x10 group photo, maps and GPS tracks for rides in the area, camping included and 3 amazing days of riding from mild to wild in the beautiful Cascade Mountains.
We have been hearing for a couple of years that our friends in the great Northwest wanted us to "Go North" ... Well the time is at hand - We've heard you & we have joined forces with BMW XPLOR and TOURATECH to bring you the first "real adventure" of the year. June 24th to 27th.
Riding - Just imagine three days of back-country riding through the incredible Cascade Mountain Range of Washington, on the last weekend of June. Yep the Great North West has some of the best trails in the country. There are thousands of miles of great adventures to be had... both on the pavement and off. One ride goes to the fire lookout on top of Sugarloaf Peak, which at 5800 feet, is the highest mountain in the local area... the view from the top is amazing. Cross over the Entiat mountains to Ardenvoir on smooth, graded roads, or go south over the remote and rocky Colockum pass. Or follow the summit road that drops down Swakane Canyon, with incredible views of the Columbia River. The TOURATECH guys are laying out GS rides from short and difficult, to long and pleasurable. Whatever your preference, we'll have rides for you, whether it's asphalt to a winery, short, twisty, and pine-needle covered, or long, rocky and remote. Each of these rides will have fantastic views. Near the camp, we'll several short test loops where you can brush up on gravel road skills before heading out, with varying degrees of difficulty, from easy, to "fun". These "test loops" will also be where the clinics described below will be held.
Not comfortable in the dirt yet? We will have a couple trainers from the BMW Off Road Academy on hand to offer tips on back country riding and they will be hosting a three of short clinics on "off roading" big bikes. Take a clinic and improve your riding skills. Sign up for the clinics at the Registration area when you come in for the event. There is a max of 15 riders per clinic.
The Location - is Leavenworth; Washington which is known as the Bavaria of Washington State... for those of you who are BMW owners; what better way to celebrate that fact than hanging out in Bavaria for a few days... and if you don't own a BMW thats OK... anything with two wheels is welcome.
A little more to the story... The campsite and meeting place is about 11 miles north of Leavenworth, in a large green meadow on private property. The road is paved halfway, then turns to wide graded gravel, and the final 3/4 mile access road is dirt. Log trucks drive this access road but it there is a longer, easier route for large motorhomes. It has fabulous views all around, the land is covered with towering pines and it's surrounded by Wenatchee National Forest. The whole encampment will run on a generator, a giant army tent will be set up as the galley and bar, and we'll have hot showers from our water trailer. We are going to have a real adventure camp out in the woods, folks. The camp is on the flanks of the Entiat Mountains, and there are miles and miles of nice forest roads in all directions. We'll ride in different directions for days, and come back to a comfortable camp in a lovely green meadow each night, what more could you ask?
All the TOURATECH folks will be there and if you have never met them... they are a great bunch of guys who want to show off the unique riding in their backyard. There's no better time than the last weekend in June to experience off-road riding in the Northwest. Camping There is plenty of room for camping and motorhomes. RawHyde will be handling the kitchen, there will be portable showers, camp fires and at night we'll enjoy the starlit skies and some local micro brew around the campfires.
Event Jersey - You'll receive an awesome a souvenir Klim Jersey which screen printed to commemorate the event.
Food - RawHyde is known for great food - in this case our two Cordon Bleu chefs Eddie and Johnny have a wonderful menu planned for the weekend.
Wine Country - Leavenworth is in the heart of Washington's wine country... there are a dozen wineries within a dozen miles of the event site. We are working to have a winery come down to out camp to do a wine tasting one night... Stay tuned for more on this.

What's new in the Parts Department Featured Products
In The Parts Department
Tire Season!
Pirelli Angle ST - If you've been in the market for some new Sport Touring tires you've probably heard about the new Pirelli Angel ST. A perfect blend of mileage and sport, the ST's patented 0° steel belt beneath the tread serves up confidence inspiring handling, even to those who don't ride bikes professionally. This tire is more stable and handles in a uniform manner, even in high speed riding conditions, yet when fully loaded it is more balanced in a corner, more stable under braking and maximizes the contact patch at all lean angles and speeds for unbeatable grip. Perfect for all R12R, RT and ST riders, as well old and new GT's!
Michelin Power One - Attention S1000RR riders: This is simply one of the lightest and stickiest tires available, with a grooved area of less than 5% (sea/land ratio), the treaded Michelin Power One is almost a slick. Contact with the track surface is maximized, for incredible grip and cornering angles approaching 60°. Silica Rain Technology improves grip in cooler temperatures and on wet pavement, without compromising tread life. The sharper profile of the tread crown, compared with Michelin Power Race, promotes lightning-quick turn-in, while the flatter shoulder delivers increased cornering stability and grip when approaching maximum lean angle (45°to 60°). Guess what? Track days are almost here!
We always carry a wide variety of street, track and dirt tires for your BMW. Plus our inventory is always current, so you will never have to worry about getting old, dried-out tires when you buy them from us. But did you know we install tires on all brands of motorcycles? And, install is only $10.00 a tire for most bikes (plus stems, weights, tubes if needed, and tire disposal - excludes Heidenau).
New products
AltRider GS Accessories - Ride West welcomes AltRider to our lineup of quality accessories for your GS! AltRider is a Seattle-based company that designs and manufactures accessories for Adventure Touring motorcycles. If you get a chance, stop buy and check out the bombproof R12GS skid plate or the stainless steel headlight grill. The quality is quite simply as good as we've seen at any price.
Galfer Brake Pads and Rotors
- New for us in 2010, premium brake pads, rotors and stainless lines at reasonable prices, that's why we stock them, including "Green" brake pads. Softer than standard organic and sintered pads, "Green" brake pads are gentle to your rotors and reduce heat, while still providing the stopping power you expect from your BMW. Although longevity is not as great (compared to organic or sintered), your rotors will thank you in the end. Perfect for prolonging rotor life on an older bike, or preserving the thickness of new rotors. Our May Parts Swap was a HUGE success - Many great deals were had! Thanks to everyone who participated in the May Parts Swap! It was a huge success and seems to be a bigger event every year, especially when it comes to used clothing. If you didn't get a chance to make it down, we'll have another swap in the fall which should be even bigger (stay tuned)! PICKUP REMINDER - Any unsold items from the parts swap are ready for pickup and checks have been sent. Remember, items left over 30 days will be donated! Check out the all new BMW Magazine. It's now in the shop, so stop in and pick up your copy for the latest on what's happening in the world of BMW Motorrad What's on your mind? What can we do better? What do we really need to stock? Your feedback is always appreciated!

Tech Tip of the Month
Need tie-down instructions or a pickup/delivery?
Happy June everyone!
If you haven't retrieved your motorcycle from its winter hibernation spot, then you'd best make haste. And if a trailer ride is necessary, then proper tie-down procedures are a must. BMW Motorrad has an entire section on their website dedicated to tying-down BMW motorcycles. We would be more than happy to go over methods with you if you need the extra support. We also have some very useful straps and tools in the parts department that can help secure your motorcycle and take the worry out of the whole operation. And if you can't get your motorcycle to us, we can probably come get it with one of our sprinter vans.
As a side note, these "tips" are never meant to scare or belittle anyone. They are meant to provide topics for thought and discussion and hopefully some useful information. We received an e-mail regarding last month's tip from a customer who said they felt as though we were trying to "scare" people out of doing their own maintenance. That is sincerely not our intent, and we hope that most people find these tips helpful rather than harmful. We choose to talk about topics that seem to come up around the shop most often during month each time. That said, Ride West as always encourages questions and responses, so thanks for your feedback, and let's keep the conversations going while we enjoy our motorcycles! Mark Eddy Service Manager |

A message from our owners: Did you know?
Now that we are well in to the riding season it is always interesting for us to query our customers about what rides they have taken or where they intend on going over the summer/early fall months. Quite often we get the response that there is too much work, or honey-do's, or not enough money or something, but that somehow an extended ride will be sandwiched in to their lives. The intention is always good, of course, but not always realized. We experienced this last year. For the past 20 years we have always taken a motorcycle trip of at least two weeks to some lovely spot (Alaska, Canadian Rockies, the American Southwest, California gold country, Australia etc.) but the economy caught up with us last year and we decided that we needed to buckle down and pay attention to business. We did, and it was the thing to do, but we sure missed that motorcycle trip. Hopefully for us it will be another 20 years before we have to forgo one.
The two periods that we particularly like to travel on two wheels in our part of the country are mid-to-late May and September through the first half of October. The weather is usually delightful and the kids are in school so the traffic and accommodations are easier to live with. And we have learned to travel differently. Our motorcycle trips used to purposely be about the ride---about getting there and back. Some years ago we counted our across country trips on two wheels and came up with 17. And we realized that we were blasting across the states and passing by some pretty incredible stuff. A lot of it we had, or have, seen but when you travel that far you just can not see it all in a few weeks. So we decided to change our travel method. Now we go to beautiful places in our back yard (the Rockies and West). We travel for usually two to no more than three days and then lay-up at a nice resort for a few days and take in the sights, then repeat the process until we get back home. We are now more relaxed and truly get to see the countryside.
Which gets us to the crux of this missive: regardless how you do it---do it. Too many of our customers say they have every intention of taking that dream trip this year, but work, or money, or something always seems to get in the way. Well maybe next year. But next year may not be good either. So just do it. We have some of the most spectacular riding county in the world within a 500 mile radius of Seattle and it is just sitting there waiting for you. So just block out a week or two and pull it off. Incidentally, the BMWMOA national rally is in Redmond, Oregon July 15-18 and this would be a perfect opportunity to discover some of that terrain. Central Oregon has twisties that won't quit and you can always count on the weather. So perhaps we will see you there---or somewhere else this summer.
Just do it!
Ann and Keith Thye
