Featured Rider Returns with Thrilling "BEARTREK" Movie Trailer!
Follow Chris's Adventures!

Chris Morgan in Borneo, photo by Cede Prudente
If you were one of the fortunate people to hear ecologist Chris Morgan give his BEARTREK slide show presentation at Ride West BMW, it's hard to imagine that some of his enthusiasm for wildlife didn't rub off on you!  Chris and his team at nonprofit Wildlife Media continue making progress on BEARTREK, their first feature-length film and conservation funding campaign.

BEARTREK, the film, follows Chris on an epic and entertaining motorcycle journey to find the world's most elusive and endangered bears.  He discovers the threats facing them in the wild, meets the dedicated people racing to save them from extinction, and invites you to join the campaign to protect bears and their habitat.

Ride West BMW has supported Chris and BEARTREK for a few years now - from the in-store presentation to various sponsorship needs.  Now, we're excited to share with you the new 90-second BEARTREK movie trailer.  Click on the video image to see what's caught the attention of PBS, Discovery Channel, and National Geographic.

To learn about the positive impact Wildlife Media is already having on conservation and nearby communities, visit their website at www.wildlifemedia.org.  Then, consider a tax-deductible contribution to fund and film bear projects in critical areas like Borneo, Peru, Italy, Mongolia, and the Arctic.  As their slogan says, "Change the way you look at the world.  Then change the world."

Rally Moto News by Jerry Brown - Official "Team Ride West" Ambassador

Pegging the throttle at the Boise Rally Moto!Have you every wondered or even wished there where a sport to race a dualsport motorcycle and actually be competitive? Well there is and it's called RallyMoto.

A few short years ago the idea was hatched by a few rally enthusiasts for a new class to race street legal dualsport bikes on the same gravel roads during the same events as Rally cars. After a couple years and a number of successful east coast events we finally got our shot here in the Pacific Northwest with the Mt Hood Rally this past October. An event that saw me bring my brand new BMW X-Challenge with the stock tires and paper license plate home to a 10th place finish. Not bad considering that event almost doubled my lifelong gravel road experience. And while placing high is great, for most it's all about the experience and camaraderie at these events. Since Mt. Hood we've also had RallyMoto at the Doowop Rally this past March in Aberdeen, WA and most recently the Idaho Rally on July 10th and 11th.

RallyMoto racing is like no other, consisting of service stages, transit stages, special stages, and rules. Yes rules, these rally folk are something else! And while the general rally, RallyMoto and event specific supplemental instructions consume enough paper to be intimidating there are only a few things you really need to know. I have found however that these documents double as an excellent sleep aid! And in case you haven't been exposed to rally racing before I'll try to sum it up with a few basics which are, you navigate from point A to point B on open to the public roads (transit stage), then you race against the clock on public but closed gravel roads from point B to point C with the competitors starting typically at one minute intervals (special stage), repeat to the next point B and so on, throw in a service stop here and there for rest and fuel (service stage) and you've got yourself a rally race. The rider with the lowest special stage total accumulated time wins.

While some rallies are one day events others are two day events such as the upcoming Wild West Rally and RallyMoto. This rally will be a two day event with a whopping 15 special stages being held on September 26th and 27th near Pomeroy, WA. The Idaho Rally we just completed was held in the Trinity Mountains area just east of Mountain Home, ID. It was a great 2 day rally event with 42 competitors including bikes, allot of fun and numerous oh &*@^ moments were experienced by all. For the motos the most difficult factor seemed to be how to manage the decomposed granite gravel roads. While I'm certainly not an expert on the subject of gravel roads I can tell you that traction was in limited supply, so much so that my G650 X-Challenge used up a new Pirelli MT21 rear tire in only 108 special stage and 280 transit miles while searching for traction. The 9 special stages ran us over a good mix of terrain ranging from high speed open stages to tight twisty stages running along lush rivers. They even had a huge spectator area set up on one stage that included a man made bump/jump that was as much fun for the riders and drivers as it was for the fans. And while our moto times fall short of the faster cars we have gotten nothing but respect and admiration from the drivers and co-drivers at these events even though they think were crazy. Us? Crazy? I can't imagine sitting in a car running these roads faster then we are, I guess they are the ones who are crazy, were just out riding and having a great time!

Team Ride West Ambassador, Jerry Brown, airborne on his BMW XChallenge!

So if you think you might be ready to experience RallyMoto as a competitor, a volunteer, or just a curious spectator I think I can speak for the rally community by saying that we'd love to have you join us. The next event will be the Wild West Rally on September 26th and 27th near Pomeroy, WA.

Let's race!

Idaho RallyMoto results:

1) Roger Neth, Boise Idaho
2) Jerry Brown, Seattle Washington  (Note: Jerry is an official Team Ride West Ambassador, way to go!)
3) Mitch Comstock, Mt. Si Washington

Tech Tip of the Month

When its time to saddle up, is your bike ready?

Pre-ride checks; they should be performed every time you take your cycle out.

I see way too many flat tires come into the shop, and it makes me wonder what else we as motorcyclists are missing as we race out the door to experience our favorite rides or destinations. Even a short trip on a flat tire, or with a low oil level can be disastrous, or at the very least rob a rider of the experience as it could have been.

I sometimes have all my gear on before I remember myself, but I know it's too important to skip. Oil level, tire pressure, cable free-play and just a glance around your bike doesn't take too long and may be enough to keep a potentially unpleasant surprise at bay.

Be thorough and be safe.

A message from our owners:

We love this all new F650GS!

Ann & Keith Thye
July 17th we celebrated our 14th anniversary with this dealership and every day has been fun (well, perhaps a few dreary days in the dead of winter may be an exception), educational and rewarding, particularly with the wonderful customer relationships that we have developed.

Operating a BMW motorcycle dealership does inherently have a benefit that makes it all worthwhile---we have the opportunity to ride a variety of models throughout the year.  We usually get to put a few miles on the new bikes prior to their introduction for retail sale and quite often will ride these new models extensively so we can talk intelligently about them.  But the best part is choosing which model to ride for the season.  We normally select a bike that we take delivery of in the early spring and ride it throughout the summer and early fall, selling it as a used motorcycle as the weather begins to turn nasty.  We continue to ride year around, but we use demonstrators and used motorcycles for the balance of the year.

In the early 1990's (before the dealership) we rode K75's.  The F650 Funduro was introduced in 1996 (after we purchased the dealership) and many of the dealers throughout the country did not endorse the bike.  They felt BMW had abandoned it's roots because of the single cylinder, and particularly the chain drive.  They also felt the bike was designed for women.  We felt differently and did a few things to promote the bike.  We got Helge Pedersen on one for some of his worldwide touring, which took care of the female image situation, and we decided to use the F650 as our ride that year.  We loaded it up with bags and took off two-up for a two week, 6,000 mile ride through the Southwest.  The bike was wonderful and we returned all fired up about the motorcycle, and it was reflected in our leading the nation in sales of the F650.

Then new models were introduced and we moved on to other rides.  The GS for two years (remember Bertha?), then an RT followed by a couple of LT's, a Roadster,  back to the RT, then a GT followed by another RT.  And now this year the F650 has been reintroduced as a twin.  We had a chance to ride it early on and fell in love with the bike all over again.  So that is what we are riding this year, and once again we are having a blast on this bike.  Certainly different from the Funduro, but what a great time we are having on this machine.  Come on in and try one out for an extended test ride---try it, you'll like it.    Click Here to learn more about the all new F650GS.
