What's new at Ride West Insurance Check Your Coverages
Riding season is finally here and you are running down the checklist of all the things you need to do to get your bike in shape for those long awaited rides in the sunshine. Was one of those steps checking to make sure your motorcycle insurance was current and providing appropriate coverage? Some riders allow their policies to lapse because the bike will be in the garage all winter and they have every intention of starting anew in the spring. Aside from ignoring the potential for an uncovered loss due to fire or theft, there are some other pitfalls to non-continuous coverage. Things like lien holder requirements, loss of renewal discounts or simply forgetting to secure a new policy. Moreover, some companies are starting to change the way the do business for motorcycle insurance in the state of Washington. This includes some new restrictions on acceptable models for new applications. As current policy holders with no lapse in coverage, you may be grandfathered in to be eligible for a much broader list of eligible bikes. In other words, keep that policy up-to-date and in force. You never know when that urge to pick up a new K1300S may hit you.

Tech Tip of the Month
Where the rubber meets the road
It's here, finally! Spring, that is; we're well on our way to warm weather, dry pavement and many enjoyable rides. Do YOU have some great summer travel plans? Will your tires make it the whole way?
Rather than taking a chance on having to change them mid-trip, or ending up stranded somewhere with a tank full of gas and a journey unrealized, come and have your tires changed at Ride West, before you head down the road.
Uneven or angled tread can adversely effect your handling, and is a sure sign that your tires are on their way out. And, who doesn't like the feeling of a brand-new round tire on a ride through the mountains? If you have any questions, or would like an estimate of how much ride you have left in your tires, come on by. If we don't have the tires you want in stock, we can order any brand or style, so let us help you have piece of mind and happy trails!
See you soon,
Mark Eddy

A message from our owners: About the "biz" in this economy
Saw a friend of ours the other day whom we had not seen for a year or so, and he said "Wow, with the industry you are in you must be taking one heck of a hit". The comment is understandable, particularly with the news of the multi-billion dollar bail out of General Motors and Chrysler; and apparently more to come. Auto dealers are closing across the country (estimated 2000 in '08/'09) and crazy promotions, like buy one get one free are still not reviving the market place. So, yes, the industry is a mess.
The motorcycle industry is also suffering, but not nearly as much as the auto industry (and BMW is the bright spot among the major motorcycle manufacturers). The reason for this is because there is a big difference between the auto and motorcycle segments of the market. Automobiles are primarily "use" vehicles, used for commuting and chores. Motorcycles (to most users) are recreational vehicles. Many BMW riders are gravitating to all purpose uses, and this is a concept that we need to promote. Motorcycles certainly have their advantages over auto's, such as great miles per gallon, use of HOV lanes, parking availability, first on-first off the ferries, etc. (ok, so we get wet once in a while). These differences give us an advantage.
Auto dealerships require huge up front costs to establish and need large parcels of property to house a very expensive inventory. Motorcycle dealerships need a building with modest land to stock a much less expensive inventory. And, of course, most motorcycle dealerships survive on much lower operating costs than our four wheel brethren. Additionally, motorcycle dealers sell a much larger proportion of accessories and apparel to total sales than the car dealers. These categories help pay the bills.
So getting back to our friend, the moral of this story is; not necessarily "as the auto industry goes, so goes the motorcycle industry". We have our problems in this economy and it has already removed a few dealers from our region, but thankfully we are not up against the kind of problems that most of the car dealerships are facing.
