Tech Tip of the Month Synching Throttle Bodies
I've had some questions lately about the synching of the throttle bodies on 2005 and later R1200 models and decided that the procedure warrants some explanation.
Starting with the introduction of the 2005 R1200GS, BMW fitted each throttle body with its own idle control solenoid. These are always moving, adjusting the idle on each cylinder many times a second. What this means to us trying to synchronize those throttle bodies is that we have to set those idle control solenoids evenly to synchronize the throttle bodies properly. The only way I know of is our BMW diagnostic computer(GT-1). Just unplugging them will stop them from moving but they will not be even, so if you or the person synching your cycle isn't performing this operation correctly your cycle isn't running it's best.
Hope this helps, and if it doesn't, come on in and we can go over it again.
See you soon,
Mark Eddy

A message from our owners: "The Legendary Motorcycles of Germany"
We read a magazine article the other day that followed a common theme. It was entitled "Possibly the only motorcycle company with a past worth building on". Here are the first few paragraphs (run together for editorial purposes): "Each year, for more years than many motorcyclists care to remember, another wave of revolutionary motorcycles rolls into America. Machines whose advanced engines, it is purported, will propel a rider not merely down the road but into a whole new era of motorcycling. An era which, with increasing predictability, lasts all of one model year. When yet another wave of "new era" machines rolls ashore. There is one motorcycle company, however, whose technology is not so transient. A company not so anxious to scrap its last year's work. Or even its last decade's. The Bavarian Motor Works of Munich, Germany".
Although this article sounds much like many of today's writings, it comes from an obscure magazine entitled "High Technology", published in the March/April 1982 edition. The point here is that BMW has been focused on making good, dependable motorcycles since 1923. They are one of the longest, continuously produced motorcycle brands in the world. They have had a worldwide dealership network for a long, long time. And so they will continue.
"The Legendary Motorcycles of Germany" (the brand logo back in 1982) are alive and well. They continue to build upon the heritage that they established 85 years ago by producing premium motorcycles that continue to hold one of the highest trade-in values in the industry. Which leads us to the crux of this text: We have some really incredible new models in the showroom and we would like you to try them. Our new demo policy is designed to offer extended test rides and we would like you come in and take us up on the offer. Try it, you'll like it! And if you are further interested, we want to sell you a new motorcycle (after all, that is the life blood of what we do), and if possible, take your current bike in trade. Ride West BMW has one of the highest used to new ratios is the industry; that is, we sell one used bike for each new unit we sell. And we do this by offering good values for the traded in units. Incidentally, trade-ins reduce the amount of sales tax on the new purchase by the amount of the trade-in. eg. A $15,000 new BMW purchase with a $10,000 trade-in will have sales tax only on the $5,000 difference. This, together with the extended federal tax exemption for new vehicle purchases, can make a new BMW motorcycle purchase much more palatable. Come on down and take that test ride. Try it, you'll like it.
