Welcome
| Welcome!
As you can see from our many articles on travel and community involvement, we are an active bunch (See articles below on winter skiing and marching in the Mardi Gras parade). Our larger community of Nevada County is also a place of activism. Recently, a delegation of over 100 people from Nevada County caravanned on the "Yuba Express" to the State Capitol and hand-delivered over 10,000 letters and petition signatures to Governor Jerry Brown. (Wolf Creek Lodge members, such as Gail Bakker, were among the signers.) They were greeted at the Capitol by Resource Secretary John Laird, who announced that the State will keep the South Yuba State Park open! For more information on the "Save Our Yuba State Parks" campaign visit http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=496 and http://yubariver.org/.

Creative Financing Options
By Magdalene Jaeckel with the help of Dina Zinnes
The long wait is finally coming to an end, and we will be moving into our beautiful Lodge by August or September of this year. We have only a few units left. All the one-bedroom homes are now taken, and we have started a waiting list for these smaller units. Those that remain are larger: two bedrooms/one bath (about 1030 sq. ft.) and two bedrooms/two baths (about 1140 sq. ft.).
Many people are already quite excited about the idea of cohousing and all the benefits it brings. Living in community with folks who share a common vision is the most important of these. It has been shown over and over again that companionship with people who care and can help each other in many small ways keeps us happy and healthy longer than living in isolation. Life is just more enjoyable that way.
BUT there is that old finance thing. You know it's not too much money because it's exactly what you want and need. However, you have to deal with banks that want those green pieces of paper up front.
Have you ever considered sharing one of the two-bedroom units with a like-minded cohouser? You might co-own or buy and sublet. You may think: Oh, here goes my privacy! But consider this: In cohousing we do not plan to live in just our individual units. We have the wonderful common rooms: kitchen and dining room, sitting room with lovely fireplace, ample terrace in front, and our gardens and green space down by the Creek. We share the Petanque court and the hot tub. So you probably won't be sitting "on top of each other."
Just a new idea! If you'd like to explore this option, please let us know. (Please see phone numbers on the right hand panel or email info@wolfcreeklodge.org.)

Mardi Gras Parade
By Claire Manhart
It was February 19, a perfect day for a Mardi Gras parade. The sky was clear blue; the sun was bright and warm. The parade route was packed with happy revelers. I marched down Broad Street in Nevada City. I was part of the Nevada County Walkers group whose hearty members carried our banner back-to-back with their banner. Wolf Creek Lodge is a sponsor of the Nevada County Walkers who invited me to participate with them in the parade. Wow, I could get used to this! Maybe next year I'll be invited to march down Bourbon Street in New Orleans!

Winter Sports
By Bob Miller
| Claire skate skiing at the cross country center. |
Winter sports around Donner Summit are only an hour's drive from Wolf Creek Lodge. Last year there was abundant snowfall in the northern Sierras; this year it's just the opposite. There is far less snow than usual. However, there has been the opportunity to go both downhill and cross country skiing. The downhill is mainly restricted to groomed trails. Those that like to jump off cliffs into deep powder have been rather frustrated. The cross-country skiing on groomed trails has been fine, but the available trails are somewhat restricted, and there are places were the snow is thin or icy. As each day passes without snow it becomes more difficult to reach the good snow. So check first, but certainly come out and ski.
We are all hoping that March will bring enough snow to provide the scenery characteristic of winter in the Sierras.
