Netbooks, notebooks...what's the real difference and what's right for you?  

Staying "connected" seems more important than ever before in today's competitive marketplace.  Consumers are starting to trend towards picking up netbooks as an alternative to notebooks.  Netbooks now account for 20% of portable computer shipments.  What's causing the change, and what's the big difference?  

Well it's actually a small difference.  Netbooks on average weigh between 2-3 pounds and the keyboards are around 85% the size of a normal one.  Most have a 7 inch screen display.  They also tend to have less memory and are in general less powerful than traditional notebooks.  

So what are the key factors to consider when deciding between the two?  While both devices are considered portable, the size and weight difference could make a world of difference.  However, in a recent study, 60% of netbook owners say they purchased it because of it's portability.  Yet, almost 60% of owners say they use it solely in their home.

Next, you should ask yourself what you want to do on it.  Do you want to surf the web, maybe write a document?  Or are you a multi-tasker who wants to have 7 programs open at once?  Keeping in mind how you use your computer can help you decide whether or not you need the extra "umpf" of a notebook versus a netbook.

And while I could continue with numerous characteristics to consider, one that stands out to me is whether or not you can type on the smaller keyboard.  This is when an in-person test run becomes necessary, because if you can't type on it, it's just not worth it.
