FeatureThe Essentials of Network Troubleshooting:  A Review
Brian S. Pauls

This week, we wrap-up our long-running series on network troubleshooting. Few business owners want to spend time dealing with computer problems. If you find yourself in a tight spot, however, and you can't wait for help to arrive, here are the tips we have discussed in this series:

1. Reboot

Start by restarting--the workstation, the printer, or the network router that is causing the problem.

2. The simplest things break first.

Check the cables. And the software settings.

3. It's probably someone's fault.

What has changed on your network, before this problem raised its ugly head?

4. It has probably happened before.

Have you encountered this problem previously? Are you sure? How did you fix it the last time?

5. Work from the inside out.

Start with the most specific example of the problem, and work towards the most general. If your PC can't get on the Internet, it may be your PC (very specific,) and not the entire network (very general.)

6. Remember: There is an answer.

Reminding yourself that a solution exists will help you find it.

7. Use your imagination.

Think creatively about what might be causing the issue. Avoid assumptions that take you down the wrong track.

8. Google Groups is your friend.

Use this Web-based resource to look up answers to your most common (and many of your uncommon) problems.

9. Be patient.

Computer troubleshooting takes time, and there is really no way to short-circuit the process, if you want to achieve good results.

10. Don't hesitate to call tech support.

Sometimes, asking for advice is the best way to get back to work quickly. If you have technical support, use it!

11. Write it down!

Once you find the answer, make a note of it someplace safe, so you won't forget it.

12. Learn from experience.

The next time you have a problem, refer to your notes at the beginning of the troubleshooting process. You may find you have saved yourself hours of frustration by looking up the answer right off the bat.

While just following these pointers will not turn you into a professional network technician, it may help save the day the next time the network goes down, and there is no one but you around to fix it!
