Exploits Appearing for Windows Security Vulnerability
|
Exploits have already appeared on the Internet for the Windows security vulnerability we reported last week.
As we discussed at that time, Microsoft has recently released Security Bulletin MS08-037.
This subject of this bulletin is a newly-discovered vulnerability in the way Internet names (such as www.google.com, www.yahoo.com, www.microsoft.com, etc.) are resolved.
The practical effect of this vulnerability is that someone malicious, outside your network, can "spoof" an internet name, which means they can send you to the wrong site. In other words, you might think you are going to amazon.com, and the spoofer may even make a site that LOOKS like amazon.com, but when you enter your credit card information, it goes to the spoofer, not to Amazon.
The severe implications of this vulnerability are obvious.
Microsoft has released patches for all affected operating systems.
If you would like PerAspera to apply these patches to your equipment please call our Service Department at 913-385-7102, Option 2, or send email to service@peraspera.com.
PLEASE NOTE: This message is provided for informational purposes only. It gives no advice or recommendation regarding how these patches are to be installed. Patches to the Microsoft Windows operating system can cause unexpected problems when applied. Microsoft has reported that certain difficulties have been encountered when applying these patches. Anyone applying these patches should read the Security Bulletin and associated documentation carefully and understand it completely.
PerAspera Consulting, LLC is not responsible for any problems, difficulties, loss of productivity, or other complications encountered when these patches, or other software programs, are applied by anyone not associated with PerAspera Consulting, LLC. Technical support is available, on a per-hour basis, on-site or via telephone, should someone installing these patches encounter problems.
We highly recommend that you have these patches installed by PerAspera Consulting, or by another professional computer support organization, to avoid any significant difficulties during the patching process.

Google Groups Is Your Friend
|
You may not be a computer expert. You may only troubleshoot your
network as a last resort. That does not mean you have to go it alone.
Thanks to the Internet, you have immediate access to a world of
technical experts who are more than happy to share their knowledge with
you.
Where do you find these valuable resources?
One of the best places to track them down is on Google Groups.
Several
years ago, Google bought Deja News, a Web interface to the Usenet
newsgroups, an extremely popular Internet communication forum. Google
then supplemented the Usenet information with other archived messages
at its disposal, going all the way back to 1981. Finally, Google added
the ability for Google Groups users to add new groups.
Today, you can search to Google Groups to find discussions on pretty much any technical topic you can imagine.
How
does all this help you? The key is that individuals encountering
technical problems often use Google Groups to seek help. Whatever
trouble you are experiencing, someone else has probably had the same
problem--and the odds are good you will find a discussion of the issue
on Google Groups. Often, a user will post a description of the problem,
and someone else--with more technical knowledge or experienc--will post
the answer.
So the solutions to all your problems may be there, on the Internet, waiting for you to look them up!
How do you use Google Groups?
It is very simple. Just go to groups.google.com and enter the appropriate terms in the Search Groups box. If you are getting an error message, a great idea is to search by using a key phrase from that message. Most of the time, this will take you directly to the discussion you want.
So
what do you do if there is no existing discussion about your problem?
Perhaps the difficulty you have encountered is new enough that no one
has yet asked about it on Google Groups?
In that case, you can be the one to ask!
A topic in Google Groups is a conversation...you can post and reply, as well as read.
To
start a new discussion, you will need to create a Google account (or
log in, if you already have an account,) select a nickname to use when
you post to Google Groups, and pick the group to which you want to post.
The
best way to pick the right group is to search on the name of the
computer system or software that is causing trouble. If you are having
problems with Windows XP, enter "Windows XP" in the Search Groups box. This should provide you with a link to the various Windows XP user groups.
WARNING: Google Groups can have funny names. The names of the Windows XP groups are alt.windows-xp and alt.comp.os.windows-xp.
This is a hold-over from when the Usenet service was created by
hard-core geeks. Don't let it bother you--the fact that "windows-xp"
appears in the name should be your clue as to which group(s) you should
choose.
Click on the link for the group to which you want to
post. On the right-hand side of the screen, at the top, you will see
the heading Discussions. Below this, you will see a link that says new post.
Click the link (you may be asked to log in again with your Google
account.) This will take you to a blank form for your new post, and you
will be ready to go! Just fill out the form with a description of your
problem, and any questions you have, and then click Post Message.
Presto!
Your message will now appear on Google Groups, so the helpful experts
of the world can provide you with answers. Just monitor the group
periodically, to check the responses. This way, you may find that the
answers come to you.
Also--play around with the preferences
and settings in Google Groups. You can do a lot of useful things. For
instance, it is possible to subscribe to a group, so you are alerted by
email when someone posts a response. That way, you will be able to
follow the discussion without constantly checking the Google Groups Web
page.
There are a lot of resources on the Internet for someone
seeking computer and network help. Google Groups is one of the best.
Take time to get familiar with it, and to learn how it can make your
life easier.
Next Week: Be Patient
|
|
With the complexity of today's computer and information systems, we can use all the help we can get. Google Groups is one of the best places to get free assistance in solving those tough technical problems.
Sincerely,
Brian Pauls
