Greetings!
This week, we had planned to continue our multi-part series on network troubleshooting with a discussion of Google Groups. A recent Microsoft Security Bulletin, however, and Internet exploits of the vulnerability discussed in that bulletin, have caused us to interrupt our series. Read below to learn how this new Windows security vulnerability puts you at risk, and what you can do about it. |

ALERT: Web Users At Risk From New Windows Vulnerability
|
Recently, Microsoft released Security Bulletin MS08-037.
This subject of this bulletin is a newly-discovered vulnerability in the way Internet names (such as www.google.com, www.yahoo.com, www.microsoft.com, etc.) are resolved.
The practical effect of this vulnerability is that someone malicious, outside your network, can "spoof" an internet name, which means they can send you to the wrong site. In other words, you might think you are going to amazon.com, and the spoofer may even make a site that LOOKS like amazon.com, but when you enter your credit card information, it goes to the spoofer, not to Amazon.
The severe implications of this vulnerability are obvious. All current versions of Windows Server, including Windows Server 2008, 2003 and 2000 are affected, as well as all current versions of the Windows desktop operating system, with the exception of Vista. However, Vista users may still encounter problems if the servers to which they
connect are not properly patched. Microsoft has released patches for all affected operating systems. The Security Bulletin linked above addresses which patches need to be installed for your version of Windows, and also links a document, explaining difficulties that may occur when the patches are installed.
Since news of this vulnerability has been made public, exploits have already appeared on the Internet. Everyone running an affected, unpatched, operating system is at risk. Servers and workstations (including stand-alone desktops and notebooks) should be patched. We highly recommend that you make arrangements to have these patches installed as soon as possible.
If you would like PerAspera to apply these patches to your equipment please call our Service Department at 913-385-7102,
Option 2, or send email to service@peraspera.com.
PLEASE NOTE: This message is provided for informational purposes only. It gives no advice or recommendation regarding how these patches are to be installed. Patches to the Microsoft Windows operating system can cause unexpected problems when applied. Microsoft has reported that certain difficulties have been encountered when applying these patches. Anyone applying these patches should read the Security Bulletin and associated documentation carefully and understand it completely.
PerAspera Consulting, LLC is not responsible for any problems, difficulties, loss of productivity, or other complications encountered when these patches, or other software programs, are applied by anyone not associated with PerAspera Consulting, LLC. Technical support is available, on a per-hour basis, on-site or via telephone, should someone installing these patches encounter problems.
We highly recommend that you have these patches installed by PerAspera Consulting, or by another professional computer support organization, to avoid any significant difficulties during the patching process. |
