May Peace Prevail on Earth

peace poleThe Bishop's Committee has commissioned a Peace Pole for Saint John's as a symbol of who we are as the People of God in this holy place on the occasion of our 50th Anniversary.  Peace Poles can be found throughout the world, on all continents and in most cultures.  The words are always the same:  May Peace Prevail on Earth  The languages reflect the community in which each Peace Pole is found.  Our Peace Pole uses four languages:  English, Spanish, Japanese (in keeping with our Japanese Cherry Trees-another symbol of peace) and Aramaic (believe to be the First Century language of Jesus).  Saint John's Peace Pole has been installed in the front of the Church so all those who step on our property will know this is a place of peace, a place where peace is felt, promoted and shared.  We are honored to have Bishop Diane bless and dedicate our Peace Pole this Sunday during our 50th Anniversary celebration.

Founding Member to be honored

At its May meeting, the Bishop's Committee of Saint John's La Verne passed a motion to honor Mrs. Martha Marsh as our iconic founding member.  Mrs. Marsh has been a member of Saint John's for its entire 50 year history and has, thoughout that time, been an example of Godly living and prayerful witnessing.  She continues to be a vital part of our congregation, serving on Altar Guild, attending mid week Bible Study and claiming her place amoung the saints of Saint John's each Sunday (Fish Window side, two rows back, 8:00 a.m service :-) ).

Since she is not yet "on line", we can announce it here :-) and look forward to her delighted surprise on Sunday when she is presented with a very special Vicenti Award for "iconic service to her Lord and witness to her siblings in Christ".

I know you join me in giving thanks for her presence amongts us.

Diocesan Sunday

hands in healingWhat does the Rapture, the 50th Anniversary of Saint John's and Diocesan Sunday have in common?  They are all being "celebrated" this weekend!  Diocesan Sunday is an annual observance of the mission and ministries that unite us as a Diocese in Southern California.  It provides us an opportunity to:

Shine in interfaith unity: as we plan to attend "OneLight" on September 10, 2011 at Los Angeles City Hall.
