A Gentle Lenten Discipline
by Terri Ensberg
Kaizen is a way to make continual improvements in individuals and organizations with small, peaceful steps.  This philosophy worked for Japanese industry after WWII,  John Wooden, the drastic lowering of the crime rate in New York twenty years ago, American industry during WWI, and many other businesses and individuals.  ( See One Small Step Can Change Your Life: The Kaizen Way, by UCLA psychologist Robert Maurer.)

Drastic change sets off alarm bells in the brain and tends to work in the short run then fade out  Small steps gain a momentum of their own as new habits form without the resistance that most of us feel to change.  The trick is to work with steps so tiny and insignificant that they gradually build improvement without creating the uneasiness people often feel in response to change.  We can bring this loving, mindful attention to our church to improve it continually.

Here is a gentle Lenten discipline for the congregation:  sometime during Lent each of us might find onetask requiring  no more than five minutes and no money to do andquietly perform it for the improvement of our church.  We might dust a shelf, empty a wastebasket, water a plant, leave a message on someone else's voicemail saying we are thinking of him or her, push in a chair, hug someone, clear someone else's dishes at a meal, etc.  The true discipline is in noticing what needs to be done.  Nothing is too small or insignificant to be worth doing.  If wiping off a shelf feels like too much, it is fine to wipe off half a shelf.  We can transform ourselves and our church through baby steps.

50th Anniversary Celebration Plans

50th Anniversary Weekend

May 21-22, 2011

A grand celebration will take place the weekend of May 21-22, so SAVE THE DATE.  Bishop Diane Jardine Bruce will be with us that day as our preacher and celebrant.  Which means we will have confirmations that Sunday!  Please speak to KGK+ if you are interested in formal membership in the Episcopal Church via the sacrament of Confirmation.

If you have pictures, old bulletins, or other items that can be scanned or digitized for the 50th anniversary video and memory book, please bring them to the office clearly marked with your name and "For 50th Celebration".  If it's already in electronic media, even better!  Simply email them to

office@stjohnslaverne.org

Scott Miasano will be making a video for the 50th anniversary and would like to do "on camera" interviews with several members of the congregation.  Look for sign ups soon.
