Welcome back to Water!, the conclusion of our two part series.
We'll explore a little bit more into the various "miracle water" claims and conclude with some recommendations.

We pick up here with our discussion on ionized water where advocates continue to espouse the benefits, including the "grouping" of smaller water clusters (5-6 water molecules instead of the 10-13 found in tap water). The claim is that it will be up to six times more quickly and easily absorbed thus hydrating the tissues "if you drink enough of it". Scientific evidence of this is elusive however. The research I did uncover indicated that H2O molecules cannot be stabilized or retain a cluster configuration unless they're frozen. The structure of water does not vary - it consists of two atoms of hydrogen and 1 atom of oxygen and if you drink enough of it, most water will increase tissue hydration anyway.
Another claim of ionized, alkaline water is that it can originate from glaciers making it the ideal drinking water for increased energy, greater mental awareness and concentration. However, if that were the case, the only ideal drinking water would be found in glacial areas. Since of all freshwater available on Earth, about two-thirds is frozen in ice caps and glaciers - it's mostly inaccessible to us. Therefore, the primary water source of humans is and always has been surface water or that in lakes, reservoirs, rivers, and streams. Underground water from aquifers (highly permeable rocks, soil and sand) can be extracted through wells or found as springs. Groundwater resources actually exceed surface water on the planet, but since surface water is easier to access in large quantities, it is more used.
Others assert that altered water with a pH between 8-10, will have "hundreds of times more excess oxygen then neutral tap water and no acid elements or toxic substances in it". The truth is that water pH is related to the hydrogen ion concentration and little to do with the oxygen content. There have been no conclusive studies found that excess oxygen unnaturally added to water has any benefits. Oxygen cannot travel freely in the blood, and ionized forms of oxygen have very short life.
In 2001, the American Council on Exercise (ACE) commissioned a study of super-oxygenated waters to try and substantiate the claims. The study concluded that "drinking superoxygenated water had no measurable effect on the subjects' resting heart rate, blood pressure or blood lactate values". It was also concluded that "...at this time, there is no scientific evidence or logical rationale to suggest that drinking super oxygenated water can in any way increase the amount of oxygen in the blood stream".
I have seen many claims that altered waters can reverse the aging process. If this were true, those that drink it would experience a very unnatural phenomenon since it is physically impossible to "reverse" aging a la Benjamin Button! Longevity has also been claimed in that users have longer life spans and routinely live 120-140 years, in good health with virtually no cancer. My research uncovered that the oldest living person in recent history lived to be 122 years old and no one has broken 120 years since. In addition, longevity can be attributed to many factors including climate, genetics, diet, lifestyle, stress levels, etc.
An additional statement noted that we "often mistake the thirst signal for hunger, and overeat". However, the two internal signals for thirst and hunger are very different and I don't know anyone who mixes the two up. Yet, since most natural foods contain various amounts of water, the body may be "thirsting" for the water contained in high-water content foods such as fruits which would be beneficial in most cases.

Ozonated water is another type of water that has been strongly promoted. This is essentially water that has had ozone diffused into it. Ozone itself is a colorless unstable toxic gas with a pungent odor and powerful oxidizing properties formed from oxygen by electrical discharges or ultraviolet light. It differs from normal oxygen (O2) in having three atoms in its molecule (O3).
In the atmosphere, Ozone protects us from Ultraviolet exposure, but on the ground it has been used commercially for years as a disinfectant for municipal water supplies and it is applied as an anti-microbiological agent for the treatment, storage, and processing of foods. Although the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has accepted ozone as being safe; it has been discovered that the use of ozone produces a small amount of the suspected carcinogen bromate. In addition, since it is highly unstable, it decomposes into ordinary oxygen by the time the water reaches the consumer.
Home filtration units such as Reverse Osmosis, carbon and microfiltration and UV light for bacterial growth removal can be beneficial, but also have their limitations such as removal of beneficial minerals and line-of-sight bacterial elimination while leaving some bacteria, viruses or mold untouched. It's really up to the consumer to research the particular method or filter and find out which is the best for their particular needs.
Bottled water could be the subject of an entire book! There are literally hundreds of bottled waters and the review of each would be beyond the scope of this report. Many waters that claimed to be pure spring water were discovered to be bottled up tap water and most of the bottled waters that I looked at were not very transparent as far as sourcing information was concerned. I don't have any particular bottled water brand recommendations, but you can narrow down the search by contacting the company of the water you are interested in and asking them the source of their water, what kind of bottles they use, how long from bottling to shelf and most importantly, if they have a detailed recent and regular analysis on what's in the water according to acceptable levels for you and your family.
After all my research, it was interesting that I found none of the miraculous health claims of "altered" waters backed by credible scientific evidence or even impressive testimonials. The only claims I have seen are from those who are selling it or the alkalizing machine along with a lengthy explanation of already known information regarding general chemistry, pH, etc. The limited clinical research I did find revolved primarily around testing done on rats, mice and chicks. There were very few human studies done and nearly all of those showed limited success dealing almost exclusively with gastrointestinal or joint disorders which increased water consumption in general has shown to be helpful.
I also sent several e mails to various companies/claimants of this type of water benefit and have not received one reply, let alone an explanation. Even as an alternative health care provider, I have yet to see any strong supportive evidence that would cause me to try or even recommend ionized, alkaline water.

Hydration: how important is it? Well, that depends on how dehydrated one is. Once again, our bodies are designed to let us know most of the time when water is needed. Granted, there are factors that may interfere and it is certainly better to be well-hydrated than not, but...do we really need to drink as much water as is being suggested by many (8-12 glass per day), especially by those who are pushing altered water? My opinion is that we only need to drink when thirsty, for the most part, when participating in heavy sports/activity or when in an active detoxification program.
Keep in mind that unless you are eating dehydrated foods or extremely dry foods (which I hope is just a very small part of your diet), you are receiving water. Meats, fruits, vegetables, cooked pastas, etc. add a significant amount of water to your daily intake. I eat a lot of fruit and vegetables as well as some ocean-caught fish along with occasional dry healthy snacks and yet probably drink no more than 16 to 24 ounces of additional water per day. I was recently tested after several hours of drinking little to no water and my hydration levels were considered excellent. One thing I have found is that drinking lots of liquids during or around meal time can interfere with the digestive process by diluting stomach acids and making it more difficult to break down foods. In addition, it often causes heartburn and acid reflux for many.
So, what is the best water to drink? Natural, pure, filtered water is excellent immediately after taking intraMAX, intraKID or intraMIN as it won't interfere with the absorption of our nutrients and won't chelate anything from within the water. But for those not taking extra mineral supplementation, the best water to drink would be that untouched by the modern world as it was several hundred years ago. However, since that is extremely difficult to do, the best regular drinking water would be raw water that is free of chemicals, contaminants and organisms, but contains the minimum softness and array of natural minerals.
If you look hard enough you can find a fresh water source near you (try www.findaspring.com) or a company online that you can order through. There are also some filter systems that do a very good job of cleaning out the unwanted elements and organisms while keeping most of the mineral content intact - it's a matter of preference really.
If you're fortunate enough to have a deep well, have the water tested and then filter it to remove contaminants, but leave the mineral content in. I'm still looking for and experimenting with various waters to try and find what I consider the best. I haven't found it yet, but if I do, you will be among the first to know! I do hope this information and the suggestions have been helpful. As I mentioned, it is a tough subject made even tougher by pollution! Let's do what we can to clean things up!
Thank you again.
May the Lord bless and keep you.
Yours in Good Health,
Dr. Mike
