Hello again. I hope you've all had a wonderful summer and are looking forward to fall and all the associated holidays. A little background information...In addition to helping friends/patients with their nutritional needs and questions, I've also taught health in a private school. One of the topics of health is, of course, nutrition. We discuss the importance of getting the right amount of vitamins, but more importantly, the source of the vitamins. In this newsletter, we will be discussing two of the B vitamins: B1 and B2. Why discuss a couple of seemingly boring vitamins? Simply because they are vital to our health and survival. Additionally, many folks are unfamiliar with the important role these vitamins play in our lives. Let's find out more...... Dr. Michael Roth
Thiamin or Thiamine, is a water-soluble B-complex vitamin. It is involved in numerous body functions, including: nervous system and muscle functioning; flow of electrolytes in and out of nerve and muscle cells; multiple enzyme processes; carbohydrate metabolism; and production of hydrochloric acid (which is necessary for proper digestion). Because there is very little thiamin stored in the body, depletion can occur as quickly as within 14 days. Severe chronic thiamin deficiency can result in potentially serious complications involving the nervous system/brain (memory and mental function), muscles, heart, and gastrointestinal system. Additionally, B1 has been used to treat and shown effective for the following conditions: Acute Alcohol Withdrawal, Alzheimer's disease, athletic performance, cancer, cataract prevention, Crohn's disease, and heart failure (cardiomyopathy).
Vitamin B2 or Riboflavin is a water-soluble vitamin which is involved in vital metabolic processes in the body, and is necessary for normal cell function, growth, and energy production. Small amounts of riboflavin are present in most animal and plant tissues. Healthy individuals who eat a balanced diet (the key phrase here) rarely need riboflavin supplements. Especially good dietary sources of riboflavin are milk (and other dairy products), eggs, enriched cereals/grains, meats, liver, and green vegetables (such as asparagus or broccoli). Intake may be lower in vegetarians compared to non-vegetarians. Supplements : The most common forms of riboflavin available in supplements are riboflavin and riboflavin 5'-monophosphate. Riboflavin is most commonly found in multivitamin and vitamin B-complex preparations. B2 has been shown effective in treating: Neonatal jaundice, Anemia, Anorexia /bulimia, Cataracts, Cognitive function, Depression, Esophageal cancer (prevention and treatment), Malaria, Migraine headache prevention, and Preeclampsia.
A question I have been asked many times is, "Well doc, if I'm eating a pretty healthy diet, aren't I getting enough B vitamins?" My answer 50 years ago might have been "probably". (Of course that would have been fairly difficult since I wasn't alive yet)! However, my answer today is, "Possibly, but most likely not." But, why not? The simple answer is, because of what has been occurring with our foods. Without getting into the gory details, livestock are being fed with food that is chock full of unhealthy by-products, steroids, contaminated feed - which can only produce an "inferior" meat product. Additionally, the heavy toxin run-off from factories has polluted and contaminated much of the soil foods are grown in. And, overuse of farming fields have left the soils greatly depleted of minerals that are essential for complete and proper food growth. In order to ensure that you are getting all the minerals, vitamins and nutrients your body needs, it is essential that you supplement with the right kinds of vitamins and minerals. Another question: "Does it matter where I get my vitamins?" Answer, "Absolutely!" The reason is this: there is a tremendous amount of misinformation out there regarding nutritional supplements. For example, there are many products labeled as being "organic", "healthy" or "natural", that quite frankly are anything but! It's important that product claims are truthful and accurate. Additionally, over-the-counter vitamins and minerals quite often contain very little of the actual product listed, and that product may have been processed using outdated, unclean methods, transferred from place to place, or may have been stored for quite some time before arriving on a store shelf, thus causing much of it's potency to be lost. The processing of these products may have been done in less-than-optimal conditions or grown in mineral-depleted soil. Lastly, many of the cheaper, easily accessible supplements, from grocery stores and "health-food" stores, are synthetic and loaded with so many by-products and fillers, they may actually do more harm than good! My expertise has led me to research and recommend only products that I consider the very best and are only available through doctors or health care professionals. This ensures the highest potency, quality and service. IntraMax is one such product. In fact, it is the finest nutritional product I've ever come across. It contains the highest quality and most complete form of vitamins and minerals available today. Everything contained in it is organic and wrapped in carbon. This means 100% cellular absorbability as opposed to most products that allow for 30% absorption at best. IntraMax contains all the essential vitamins including the complete B range - everything your body needs to get and stay healthy, and perform at its best! You can make a significant difference in your health, but you must act and you must supply your body with everything it needs. IntraMax is the most comprehensive supplement on the market. Thank you and until next time, may the Lord keep and sustain you. Sincerely, Dr. Michael Roth
