  • Hello again everyone!

How many of you have seen the movie, “Super-Size Me”? If you haven’t yet, I strongly suggest that you do. This impactful documentary strikes at the heart and cause of much of today's modern epidemic health problems – awful nutrition. The movie is primarily bashing the world’s top fast-food chain, but it also reveals the alarming and disturbing trend of fast food and poor nutrition in our schools and homes.

This month we discuss dietary habits among children, what needs to be changed and how.

    The Problem With Nutrition

This is a timely topic since Drucker Labs has just released intraKID, the world’s best and most complete nutritional supplement for children under 13 years of age; the ages when most nutritional patterns are forged and pave the way for continued eating habits throughout life.

It's hard to conceive how our country could be, not only the fattest nation on the planet, but also one of the un-healthiest! According to recent statistics, there is more incidence of diabetes, cancer, heart disease, behavioral disorders (such as: A.D.D. and hyper activity), Alzheimer's, and lung disease than any other country in the world. Many health experts conclude (and I agree with them), that this is primarily due to our poor diets.

We have to become proactive and our goal should be to start reversing the awful eating patterns that we and children today have been brainwashed to follow. We especially need to start protecting our young ones from the overwhelming barrage of poor nutritional advice and advertising in this fast-food world of ours.

Our task begins with educating our young in making healthy choices in both foods and supplementation and making sure they know why it's so important. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that we can significantly reduce the risk of serious degenerative diseases through proper nutrition. It's vital that we begin at home.

The lack of knowledge and the amount of misinformation that is out there is staggering. Although many regulations have been set to try and prevent false advertising, there are still claims being made that are completely false or are actually half-truths. A common example is fruit juice. A fruit juice may be labeled as being "natural" and containing "100% real fruit juice!" However, current regulations allow manufacturers to make that claim even if there's only a thimble-full of real juice in it!

Additionally, reports from the medical community claim that our current food supply is completely adequate for nutrients. Yet, for the most part, the medical community does not have a thorough enough nutritional education to make such a statement. In a recent Survey of Nutrition Education in U.S. Medical Schools: An Instructor-Based Analysis, the following excerpt is taken, "Nutrition plays a critical role in numerous pathophysiological conditions, including such prevalent diseases as diabetes, cancer, and cardiovascular disease. Despite the recognition that physicians are often called upon to provide guidance in nutritional aspects of disease and disease prevention, nutrition has not been consistently emphasized in medical school curricula. Indeed, numerous reports suggest that nutrition education of physicians remains inadequate."

So, if we can't rely on the medical community for nutritional advice, where can we get it? The first place to start is by asking those who DO have a good nutritional background and education. Most Alternative Health Care Providers (HCPs) have this kind of experience and knowledge, and also tend to have a handle on current nutritional issues. As a chiropractor, I know that nutritional education is part of my profession's curriculum. Ask your HCP what their nutrition background and education is. Another place to get good information is your own PC. By doing adequate searches and comparisons, you can get a wealth of information that was unavailable as little as 10 years ago.

    What's Wrong With Our Foods?

Unfortunately, poor dietary habits in children are the norm, not the exception. A large study was done of over 3000 children which appeared in "Pediatrics" and showed that only 1% of the children in the study met the recommendations for the recommended food pyramid. Additionally, this same study showed these children as being low in vitamin B6, iron, calcium, zinc and fiber. Our children must begin eating foods that are better nutritionally.

However, as important as avoiding the wrong foods and eating the right foods is, it's simply not enough. A point we must stress continually is that today's foods, even naturally grown foods, are lacking in vital minerals and vitamins due to over-processing, over-farming, soil depletion and the widespread use of pesticides. In fact, to receive the health benefits that were present in 1 cup of broccoli 100 years ago, you'd have to eat nearly 10 times that amount! Read what Dr. Drucker writes in the January 2007 issue of To Your Health, "However, minerals are not found in the same abundance today as they used to be, due to the agricultural procedures practiced over the past several decades. Thus, just eating a well-balanced diet no longer adequately supplies life-sustaining minerals. Your health and wellness are at risk unless you replace the minerals that have been diminished in our foods. According to two-time Nobel Prize winner Linus Pauling, 'Every ailment, every sickness and every disease can be traced to an organic mineral deficiency.' You must ingest the appropriate amount and quality of minerals or you will be vulnerable to illness and disease. People are not getting the proper organically complexed (carbon bound) trace minerals and nutrients to provide homeostasis (body balance) as nature intended. According to the latest research, the body is imbalanced when it is deficient in organically bound trace minerals. This causes disease, which can then manifest in the body with disastrous results." Additionally Dr. Drucker writes, "...the steady addition of toxic chemicals, herbicides, pesticides, etc., has triggered long-term soil imbalances, leading to an inability to neutralize the toxic chemicals and re-create new organic complexes and other critical minerals and nutrients. Thus, our foods have become interlaced with inorganic, toxic chemicals in place of naturally occurring, organically complexed minerals and nutrients. Again, who suffers? We all do."

So Children are not only suffering from eating the wrong foods, they may be eating good foods that are also very low in nutrition and may contain harmful additives! Moreover, when are children do become ill, rather than helping them naturally, we're loading them up with prescription drugs or OTC medications which, not only have harmful short and long term side-effects, but also may be responsible for some of the increasing autoimmune and cognitive disorders we are seeing today!

Today's children are also facing more obstacles in the way of their health than just poor nutrition and thus it becomes absolutely a must for them to put on armor through the very best supplementation. Today's kids are exposed to more toxins, pollution, and stress than those in one or two generations prior. They're dealing with free radical damage and oxidative stress daily and in higher amounts. Air pollution, water pollution, pesticides, preservatives, radiation, smoke, fatty foods, and stress are factors that raise free radical levels. These free radicals increase risks of degenerative diseases as they cause cellular and tissue damage within the body. There is a great need for diets rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants to combat the free radical damage. Children receiving the right amount and combination of these minerals and vitamins are better able to counteract the effects of the extra toxins they might face.

What can you do? I'm glad you asked! Read on...

What Nutritional Supplementation Should Your Children Take?

Children over one year of age should be on nutritional supplementation with a proper and complete combination of vitamins and minerals. But there is an overwhelming selection of choices when it comes to children's nutrition. How does one go about choosing the right supplement amongst all the hype? The first thing to remember is that the cheapest product is not always the best. Quality products may demand higher prices. Begin to research the company by reading the available material on the web site and/or contact the company and ask for information. Find out if the company follows Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP). Look on the label and see if potency is guaranteed. Check the sugar and additive content. Many of the "cartoon" vitamins have sugar listed as the first or second ingredient. The proper balance of nutrients must be offered since they work synergistically - certain vitamins and minerals work cooperatively in different metabolic pathways in our cells and tissues. Correcting a deficiency of only one vitamin may cause a deficiency in other areas. The right nutritional supplements can help children build stronger bones, prevent and shorten colds and improve their overall health and well being.
