Greetings! In this issue we are going to discuss minerals and their particular role in our health. Many people have heard the word used and know that we need them, but are really not quite sure what they do or if they are getting what they need for proper health. Minerals are things like Zinc, Iron, Magnesium, Calcium, etc. They are necessary for all the chemical processes that go on in our bodies. Iron is one example and it is essential for our blood to be able to carry oxygen. Without oxygen our muscles simply cannot work properly. We get (or used to get) Iron from some green vegetables, liver, beef and lots of other sources. It is best obtained from lots of different foods as some don't let us absorb it quite so easily when we eat those foods. But are we really getting the minerals today that we need from the foods we eat? Hmmm... Dr. Michael Roth
Does the heading of this paragraph surprise you? It shouldn't. I know I've mentioned some of this before in our discussion on vitamins, but it is important enough to discuss again thoroughly. Despite America's wealth and know-how, we, as a people are tragically deficient in minerals. In fact, according to a US Senate study (document No. 264), 99 percent of Americans are deficient in minerals and trace elements! But how can that be? Not surprisingly, the foods we eat are over-processed and void of many essential nutrients. Additionally, they are grown in soils that have been over-planted and saturated with synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. As a result, Americans are not getting the vitamins and minerals they need, and, in order to stay healthy, prevent premature aging, ward off cancer and heart disease, your diets must be supplemented with minerals and trace elements. According to The Doctor's Vitamin and Mineral Encyclopedia, "Mineral insufficiency and trace elements insufficiency are more likely to occur than are vitamin insufficiency states. Because of differing geologic conditions, minerals and trace elements may be scarce in the soils of certain regions and rich in those of other regions. Thus, you can live in some areas, eat a perfectly 'balanced' diet and still develop mineral deficiencies or trace element deficiencies that can only be averted through dietary change or supplementation."
All nutrients such as vitamins, proteins, enzymes, amino acids, carbohydrates, fats, sugars, oils, etc. require minerals for proper cell function. All bodily processes depend upon the action and presence of minerals. Minerals are actually more important to nutrition than vitamins. Vitamins are required for every bodily biochemical process. However, vitamins cannot function unless minerals are present. Minerals are also needed for healing. Tissue rebuilding occurs much easier when the body has access to the necessary minerals. Minerals are difficult to absorb into the body. Calcium, for instance, must be taken with vitamins D and C, and essential fatty acids in the proper ratio to magnesium, in order to be digested. One of the reasons that women tend to be anemic is because of improper digestion of iron. Iron is present in every food we eat, according to the late nutritionist, Adelle Davis. However, because the mineral is difficult to digest, most iron ingested passes through the body unassimilated. Iron is best absorbed with additional vitamin C. Many mineral supplements are not easily assimilated by the body. It's important that mineral supplements are water soluble, (liquid form is best) and not in rock form, and that the elements be absorbed readily and fully, bringing more oxygen to the blood cells and thereby releasing toxins from the body.
I knew you were going to ask that! Truly the only way we can get what we need is to supplement. As I've mentioned in a previous newletter, our foods just aren't what they should be or used to be due to chemicals. Also pollution and contamination have ruined much of the soil foods are grown in. And, overuse of farming fields have left the soils greatly depleted of minerals. In order to ensure that you are getting all the minerals, vitamins and nutrients your body needs, it is essential that you supplement with the right kinds of vitamins and minerals. Just because something is labeled “organic”, “healthy” or “natural”, doesn't necessarily mean it is. It's important that product claims are truthful and accurate. Do research, check out their processing methods, reputations and testimonials. Additionally, over-the-counter vitamins and minerals quite often contain very little of the actual product listed, and that product may have been processed using synthetic or outdated materials, unclean methods, transferred from place to place, or may have been stored for quite some time before arriving on a store shelf, thus causing much of it's potency to be lost and may actually do more harm than good! The processing of these products may have been done in less-than-optimal conditions or again, grown in mineral-depleted soil. Make sure that you are supplementing with the best and most complete source of minerals available, like those found in intraMax. You can make a significant difference in your health, but you must act and you must supply your body with everything it requires. Thank you and until next time, may the Lord keep and sustain you. Sincerely, Dr. Michael Roth
