Words to Ponder
At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another. But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life. Titus 3:3-7 NIV |

Greetings!

In 2012 we begin our 14th year at NorthStar Community - a ministry focused on both recovery and spirituality. After more than a decade of working in this pioneering field, we are poised to continue this work and commit to a broader scope of ministry to our community. With this in mind, it is with great pleasure that we announce our first Associate Pastor at NorthStar Community. Scott McBean joins our team on January 1, 2012. Scott is a graduate of Fuller Theological Seminary, where he received a Masters of Divinity with a specialty in Recovery Ministry. Scott has a passion for creating an environment where God's people can grow deep roots in challenging environments.
As you come to know Scott, you might notice that he has a stubborn tenacity for any endeavor he commits to; our NS Community has watched him prepare for ministry with dogged determination. While in school, Scott was a chaplain in the Los Angeles County jail system, served in children's ministry at his church (a start up ministry in Pasadena), and worked as a security guard (ask him to show you his certificate in training on weapons of mass destruction) on the Fuller campus. From teaching children to serving on the set up and take down team at his church (that meets in a local Senior Center), Scott has been practicing for his next right step in ministry. As Associate Pastor, Scott will join our team in seeking to respond to and serve those interested in pursuing recovery within the context of a faith community. For those who do not know him, he grew up at Bon Air Baptist Church and has been part of our NSC community since day one. Our family remembers the day Scott came home from middle school and announced God's intentions for his life. As parents, Pete and I were aware that time and maturity might refine that sense of vocational call - in Scott's case, his adolescent vision has remained steady and his pursuit relentless.
When asked at a recent worship service his plans once he begins his job, Scott replied, "Whatever Teresa doesn't want to do!" I love fantasy living as much as the next recovering person, and that sounds great to me. But in truth, Scott is returning home a man with his own dreams, ideas, and sense of call to serve at NorthStar. Welcome home, Scott - we can't wait to see how the Lord is going to work in this next new chapter in your life, and the life of our community. t

The Book Nook
Bridges to Grace, Innovative Approaches to Recovery Ministry
by Liz Swanson and Teresa McBean
I was born in 1956. As far back as I remember my family was in church - always...we went most every Sunday, but WHAT we could take there with us was in question. Back then church was more about attending and "doing", not bad things, it's just that recovery had not yet been invented - in a religious setting, as a way to help families deal with addiction. My family could have used some help. In 2011, have things changed so much? I am one lucky cookie to be a part of a remarkable ministry that embraces the messiness and mixed-upness of those desperately in need of...the healing touch of Jesus that the communities in this book represent. Liz Swanson and Teresa McBean are telling stories - of castaways looking for home. All the people in this book were in need, so was I. Now, here's the thing - who would have thought that ministers and leaders in church, would be in that number as well? In need of knowing and telling their own truth and finding a place safe enough for themselves - to call home and be the leaders God calls to pastor a world dying from fear and shame? What the world of all that is sacred needs now...is the hope written about in this beautiful book...and many many many more, just like it. The Princess Bookwork |

The men who are given the privilege of attending The Healing Place, a wonderful treatment facility in Richmond, go through this program at no cost to them. We love The Healing Place - their mission, their commitment to helping men find their freedom from addiction, the program - it is all amazing. Providing free access to resources for the addicted and those who love them is a core value of NSC, but we all know that free treatment isn't free. In appreciation for The Healing Place, we are collecting donations for the Healing Place. A donor has offered a matching gift. For every dollar you contribute, a donor will match that dollar. Let's give them a very Merry Christmas by providing a financial donation that will help them sustain their good work.
We dream of a day when the sustainable work of The men's Healing Place will allow these fine people to expand and bring this same opportunity to the addicted women in our community.
If this seems like a good idea to you, and you'd like to embrace the 12th step by contributing in this way...we have a basket at the back of the room. Please designate your giving to THP in the memo portion of a check. Make the check itself out to NSC. Cash can go in the designated basket...We'll round up all our pennies, put them together and the donor will match it, doubling our effort. |

Behold the Lamb of God
Saturday, December 17, 2011
7:00 p.m.

Church of the Good Shepherd
3741 Garrett Rd.
Durham, NC 27707
Since 2000, Andrew Peterson and his friends have performed Behold the Lamb around the country, telling again and again this "true myth", as C.S. Lewis called it, this tale that's bigger than life, but is-astonishingly-true. The tour has become a yearly tradition not just for Andrew and the other artists on the tour, but for families and churches who attend the concert each season. The live concert, like the album, is a community effort, featuring singer/songwriters Jill Phillips, Andy Gullahorn, Ben Shive, Andrew Osenga and more, and over the years has featured artists such as Alison Krauss, Derek Webb, Sandra McCracken, Buddy Miller, Phil Keaggy, Sixpence None the Richer, David Wilcox, Pierce Pettis, Mindy Smith, Ron Block, Brandon Heath, Bebo Norman, Stuart Duncan, Eric Peters, and Randall Goodgame-all in the name of proclaiming the birth, death, and resurrection of Christ. |
