As Girl
Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest begins,
Lisbeth Salander lies in critical condition,
a bullet wound to her head, in the intensive
care unit of a Swedish city hospital. She's
fighting for her life in more ways than one:
if and when she recovers, she'll be taken
back to Stockholm to stand trial for three
murders. With the help of her friend,
journalist Mikael Blomkvist, she will not
only have to prove her innocence, but also
identify and denounce those in authority who
have allowed the vulnerable, like herself, to
suffer abuse and violence. And, on her own,
she will plot revenge--against the man who
tried to kill her, and the corrupt government
institutions that very nearly destroyed her
life. Once upon a time, she was a victim. Now
Salander is fighting back.
Girl
Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest will be
available May 25. Preorder your copy today

Faced with thirty-seven acres of fallen fences and overgrown fields surrounding his rickety Wisconsin farmhouse, and informed by his pregnant wife that she intends to deliver their baby at home, Michael Perry plumbs his unorthodox childhood--his city-bred parents took in sixty-some foster children while running a ramshackle dairy farm--for clues to how to proceed as a farmer, a husband, and a father. Coop is filled with humor, but Perry also writes from the quieter corners of his heart, chronicling experiences as joyful as the birth of his child and as devastating as the death of a dear friend. "Beneath the flannel surface of this deer-hunting, truck-loving Badger is the soul of a poet."--Chicago Tribune Michael Perry is a humorist and author of the bestselling memoirs Population 485: Meeting Your Neighbors One Siren at a Time and Truck: A Love Story, as well as the essay collection Off Main Street. Perry has written for Esquire, The New York Times Magazine, Outside, Backpacker, Orion and Salon.com, and is a contributing editor to Men's Health. He lives in northern Wisconsin, where he remains active with the local volunteer rescue service. Learn more at www.sneezingcow.com. Sunday, May 9, 4:00pm--Poet Judith Harway
reads from All
That is Left. She will be joined by
Minneapolis poet Tim Nolan.
Judith Harway has earned fellowships from the Wisconsin Arts Board, the Hambidge Center and the MacDowell Colony. She is on the faculty of the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design. Tim Nolan lives in Minneapolis with his wife, Kate, and three teenagers, Elizabeth, Maeve, and Frank. He works as a lawyer at the McGrann Shea law firm in Minneapolis. His poems have appeared in The Gettysburg Review, The Nation, Ploughshares, Poetry East, and many other magazines. Garrison Keillor has read Tim's poems on The Writer's Almanac. His first book of poems, The Sound of It, was published by New Rivers Press in 2008, and was a finalist for the Minnesota Book Award in poetry. Wednesday, May 12, 7:30pm--Poets Arra Lynn
Ross (Seedlip
and Sweet Apple) and Michael Walsh (The
Dirt Riddles) read from their new
work
Read an excerpt from Seedlip and Sweet Apple at milkweed.org (.pdf). Arra Lynn Ross grew up on a communal farm in Minnesota and attended Macalester College in Saint Paul. Seedlip and Sweet Apple is her first book. Michael Walsh is the author of two chapbooks of poetry, Adam Walking the Garden, and Sleepwalks. His collection The Dirt Riddles, was chosen by judge Enid Shomer from over 700 manuscripts for the Miller Williams Poetry Prize from the University of Arkansas Press. Walsh is the recipient of a Minnesota State Arts Board Fellowship and a residency at the Anderson Center for Interdisciplinary Studies. But wait, there's more... We've got
lots of great events coming up
this summer. Mark your calendars now, so you
don't forget.

When Henry receives a letter from an elderly
taxidermist, it poses a puzzle that he cannot
resist. As he is pulled further into the
world of this strange and calculating man,
Henry becomes increasingly involved with the
lives of a donkey and a howler monkey--named
Beatrice and Virgil--and the epic journey
they undertake together. With all the spirit
and originality that made Life
of Pi so beloved, this brilliant new
novel takes the reader on a haunting odyssey.
On the way Martel asks profound questions
about life and art, truth and deception,
responsibility and complicity.
"It is awe-inspiring when a writer hits a
high note; goes dancing along the edge of
something; hurls himself against enormous
questions again and again....Writers such as
Martel are a kind of human sacrifice. It
cannot be easy to imagine a way into
suffering, come out, lead others into and
through it."--Los Angeles Times
Yann Martel is the award-winning author of
four previous books. He was born in Spain in
1963, worked at odd jobs--tree planter,
dishwasher, security guard--and travelled
widely before turning to writing. He was
awarded the Journey Prize for the title story
in The
Facts Behind the Helsinki Roccamatios.
His second novel, Life
of Pi, won the 2002 Man Booker, among
other prizes. He lives in Saskatoon.

Several recent bestsellers are out now in
paperback. They're perfect for reading in a
hammock or--dare we hope?--on the beach.
Nobody
Move by Denis Johnson
From the National Book Award-winning, bestselling author of Tree of Smoke comes a provocative thriller set in the American West. Nobody Move, which first appeared in the pages of Playboy, is the story of an assortment of lowlifes in Bakersfield, California, and their cat-and-mouse game over $2.3 million. "National Book Award winner Denis Johnson's new novel, Nobody Move, gives us authentic goons: eternal fall guys, not cool criminals. They're people who turn to crime because they can't get anything right. With a Mamet-like ear, Johnson makes their deadly, idiotic squabbles sing."--National Public Radio Shop
Class As Soulcraft: An Inquiry into the Value
of Work by Matthew Crawford
"This is a deep exploration of craftsmanship by someone with real, hands-on knowledge. The book is also quirky, surprising, and sometimes quite moving."--Richard Sennett, author of The Craftsman The
Turtle Catcher by Nicole
Helget
Manhood
for Amateurs: The Pleasures and Regrets of a
Husband, Father, and Son by Michael
Chabon

Books &
Bars--the Twin Cities' most unusual and
interesting book club--meets Tuesday, May
11 at Bryant-Lake
Bowl, 810 W Lake Street, in Minneapolis.
Doors open at 6:00pm; the discussion begins
at 7:00pm.
"In reviews of Big
Machine, Victor LaValle has been compared
to Thomas Pynchon, Stephen King, Shirley
Jackson, Junot Diaz, Ralph Ellison, and
others, but his voice is unique with its
snappy dialogue and dark humor set in often
surrealistic environments. The novel is as
imaginative and clever a book I have read all
year. While reading the book, I was reminded
of the first time I read several of my
favorite authors (Murakami, Vonnegut, Carver,
etc.). When finished, I had one more name to
add to that list, Victor LaValle."--Largehearted
Boy
Books &
Bars is not your typical book club. We
