WWJD?
It was the holiday's big heartbreaker: Local authors Jeff Hertzberg and Zoe Francois had a huge hit on their hands with their book Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day, and the publisher was caught without enough stock to meet all the demand. We had to turn buyers away, and we really hate doing that.

The book is back in stock now--and what's more you can meet the authors themselves this month. On Saturday, January 19, at 4:00pm, Magers & Quinn will be the place to be for bakers and aspiring bakers alike, as Hertzberg and Francois visit our store for a demonstration of their technique and its results. We'll even have samples for you to try.

The New York Times said Hertzberg and Francois' crusty, full-flavored loaf ... may be the world's easiest yeast bread." How's that for praise? Best of all, their new method means that instead of slaving in the kitchen for hours, you can have that great bread with minimal work time.

With nearly 100 recipes to put this ingenious technique to use, Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day will open the eyes of any potential baker who has sworn off homemade bread as simply too much work. Crusty baguettes, mouth-watering pizzas, hearty sandwich loaves, and even buttery pastries can easily become part of your own personal menu, and this innovative book will teach you everything you need to know.

Can't wait for the event? You can get a glimpse of what author Zoe Francois is doing on her blog zoebakes.com.

We still have our biggest selection ever of brand new calendars--all 10 to 35% off the publisher's price. Come get yours now. Once they're gone, we won't have more until 2009.

We've got a lot of great poets coming to the store coming up. If you like your verse free, you'll love these events.

AT 7:30pm on January 11, three poets from the Minnesota writers collective Northography--Tim J. Brennan, Suzanne Nielsen, and Denise duMaurier--will read from their new work. You can find their full biographies here.

Sunday, January 20 at 5:00pm, we're pleased to host another series of readings by winners of our "What Light" poetry contest. Each quarter, well-known judges select the 13 best poems from the hundreds of poems entered. Each winning poem appears on the sponsors' website for a week. Each quarter, winners and judges are invited to read at Magers and Quinn. A list of this quarter's readers will be available shortly. An anthology of the first year's winners has been published and is available at Magers and Quinn and at the Walker.

And mark your calendars for Monday, February 11. At 7:30pm John Minczeski, award-winning local poet, will read from his newest work. He's the author of four poetry collections, the editor of three anthologies, and his poems have appeared in journals around the US and abroad, including Poetry East, Quarterly West, Agni, Meridian, Pleiades, Free Lunch, Nowa Okolica Poetow, and elsewhere.

If your post-holiday budget is saying you can't afford a wall safe, Make magazine's video podcast shows you how to make a book into a secret hiding place for your small valuables.

Resolve to get out more. Here are just two of the the fascinating events coming up this month to lure you from your winter den.

Thursday, Jan. 10, 7:30pm
Fighter, author, singer (for Oxbow), Eugene Robinson discusses Fight: Or, Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Ass-Kicking But Were Afraid You'd Get Your Ass Kicked for Asking

Robinson's book is a highly opinionated, idiosyncratic look at fighting in all its forms and glory. Robinson's narrative-told in his trademark tough-guy, stream-of-consciousness noir voice-punctuates this explanatory compendium of the fighting world. From wrestling, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, boxing and muay thai to bar fighting, knife fighting, prison fighting, and hockey fighting, from the greatest (and worst) movie fight scenes, the best sports brawls, and an inside look at soccer hooligans to how to throw the perfect left hook, Fight is an edgy and interesting illustrated book that reads as good as it looks.

Friday, Jan. 25, 7:30pm
Later in the month, we highlight fighting of a different kind--politics. Glenn Hurowitz will be in the store to discuss Fear and Courage in the Democratic Party At the height of election season, Fear and Courage in the Democratic Party chronicles the extraordinary stories of five politicians and activists: three "progressive heroes" who exhibited rare political courage - and through it found unexpected political success, and two "spineless weasels" who embraced The Politics of Fear and rode it to ultimate failure.

2007 went out with a bang for us. We sold a lot of new books. Here are our Uptown Bestsellers for the month of December.

This just might be the world's most beautiful bookstore. It's an eight-hundred-year-old converted Dominican church in Maastricht, in the Netherlands. Today it's part of the Selexyz chain. Best of all, it's an English-language bookstore, so if you get the chance to visit, you can take home a souvenir you can actually read.

The next meeting of the Twin Cities' most unusual and interesting book club is Tuesday, January 8. Books & Bars meets at Bryant-Lake Bowl, 810 W Lake Street, in Minneapolis. Doors open at 6:00pm; the discussion begins at 7:00pm.

January's book is Stumbling on Happiness by Daniel Gilbert.

Gilbert, who works in what he calls happiness studies, explores the question of why humans as a group are so bad at predicting what will actually make us happy. A partial explanation: "When we have an experience . . . on successive occasions, we quickly begin to adapt to it, and the experience yields less pleasure each time," he writes. "Psychologists calls this habituation, economists call it declining marginal utility, and the rest of us call it marriage." To get the full story, you'll have to read the book, but you can read the first chapter here to get started immediately.

Books & Bars is not your typical book club. We provide a unique atmosphere for a lively discussion of interesting authors, fun people, good food and drinks. You're welcome even if you haven't read the book.

PS: Check out the StarTribune's article about Books and Bars. They loved it!
