A Define-a-Thon is a new word game sensation based on the book series from the editors of The American Heritage Dictionary. Contestants are given a definition and have to choose the correct answer word from four choices.

The first round of the Define-a-Thon will be in writing. The MC will read definitions from the American Heritage Dictionary and will offer a multiple choice answer for some of the definitions. The 8 highest scorers in the first part advance to the one-on-one single elimination "bee" round. American Heritage Dictionary definitions rule. Decisions of the judges are final. Bribes will not be accepted.

You can read about the Define-a-Thon in the New York Times.

All contestants will receive a prize; the contest is limited to the first 24 people to sign up. To sign up, Call David U. or David E. at Magers and Quinn or e-mail davidu@magersandquinn.com.

Magers and Quinn is pleased to again participate in Hennepin County's annual Choose to Reuse program. County residents generate almost 7 pounds of waste per person per day. Recycling alone isn't enough; we need to prevent waste. Used books--and you do know we're the biggest used bookstore in the Twin Cities, in addition to all our snazzy new books, right?--are not only economical; they're also environmental.

Stop in the store and pick up the Choose to Reuse booklet with coupons for 80 local retailers who are making it easy to prevent waste. Look for the M&Q coupon and you can even save a little money. Or for more information, Choose to Reuse website.

The shortlist for this year's Man Booker Prize--probably the most prestigious prize for English-language fiction--was announced last month. Among the final six are some you'd expect to see and a few I've never heard of. Darkmans and Animal's People aren't available in this country yet, but that could well change in the coming weeks.

I wrote brief descriptions of all the finalists on the M&Q blog. You can read them here. The winner of the Man Booker Prize will be announced on October 16.

MAGERS AND QUINN PRESENTS
Paul Krugman
Tuesday, October 6, 7:30pm

Join us for an evening with New York Times columnist Paul Krugman. Professor Krugman will be interviewed by David Morris, Vice President of The Institute for Local Self-Reliance. This event is free and open to the public; a reception and book signing will follow.

Note that unlike most M&Q events, this reading will be at Temple Israel, 2324 Emerson Avenue S, in Minneapolis.

With this major new volume Conscience of a Liberal, Paul Krugman, "the heir apparent to Galbraith" (Alan Blinder) and, today's most widely read economist, studies the past eighty years of American history, from the reforms that tamed the harsh inequality of the Gilded Age to the unraveling of that achievement and the reemergence of immense economic and political inequality since the 1970s. Seeking to understand both what happened to middle-class America and what it will take to achieve a "new New Deal," Krugman has created his finest book to date, a work that weaves together a nuanced account of three generations of history with sharp political, social, and economic analysis.

Last Christmas, I tried to sell everyone who came in the store a copy of Monkey Portraits, Jill Greenberg's collection of the prettiest monkeys you're ever gonna see. And it broke my heart when we ran out of books and couldn't get more from the publisher before the holiday.

Now the paperback edition is out. It's in stock, and what's more, it has been expanded. The new book has eight more monkeys. What are you waiting for?

The next meeting of the Twin Cities' most unusual and interesting book club is Tuesday, October 9. Books & Bars meets at Bryant-Lake Bowl, 810 W Lake Street, in Minneapolis. Doors open at 6:00pm; the discussion begins at 7:00pm.

Wake Up,Sir! by Jonathan Ames. What seems at first to be a semi-autobiographical reformulation of PG Wodehouse's stories featuring the unflappable butler Jeeves becomes much more scandalous in this funny and inventive novel.

Books & Bars is not your typical book club. We provide a unique atmosphere for a lively discussion of interesting authors, fun people, good food and drinks. You're welcome even if you haven't read the book.

PS: Check out the StarTribune's recent article about Books and Bars. They loved it!

There's always something new at Magers & Quinn. Stop in today or check our inventory on our website any time.

We'll be back next month with more book news.

Until then,
