WWJD?
We've been working hard to expand our new book stock, so it's nice to be reminded of our roots. Magers & Quinn has been named the Best Independent Bookstore (Used) by the City Pages. They said:

"It's nice when a bookstore is large and serpentine enough to offer hidey-holes and escape routes, should one catch a glimpse of an irritating co-worker or regrettable ex-boyfriend. M&Q's buyers are discerning, so the treasure-to-trash ratio is above average, but they're also democratic, so they have pulp paperbacks as well as the letters of Robert Lowell, a shelf devoted to books on "sexual fulfillment," and a good amount of German philosophy, long a wonderful comfort to the sexually unfulfilled. The store also stocks an impressive selection of collectibles. Imagine how impressed people will be when they notice your first edition of John Barth's The Sot-Weed Factor. Like any decent bookstore, M&Q hosts regular readings and sponsors literary events around town. Bookish singles should take note of "Books and Bars," held on the second Tuesday of every month at the Bryant-Lake Bowl. Selections tend to be acclaimed works of recent literary fiction, the buzz books of the smart set, including Gary Shteyngart's Absurdistan and Marissa Pessl's Special Topics in Calamity Physics."

So to sum up... We got your new books, we got your old books. We got your events, we got your literate singles yearning to read free. You got to hand it to City Pages, they get the story right.
Friday, May 18, 7:30pm, at Lyndale United Church of Christ, 810 W 31st St, Minneapolis

Join us for a special evening with Valentino Achak Deng, subject of Dave Eggers' extraordinary book What Is the What. Tickets are five dollars; three dollars from each ticket goes to the Valentino Achak Deng Foundation, dedicated to helping Sudanese, both in the US and Sudan.

This event will be held at Lyndale United Church of Christ. The church is located at 810 W 31st St, at the corner of 31st and Aldrich, half a mile east of our store.

Separated from his family, Valentino Achak Deng became a refugee in war-ravaged southern Sudan. His travels brought him in contact with enemy soldiers, with liberation rebels, with hyenas and lions, with disease and starvation, and with deadly murahaleen (militias on horseback)-the same sort who currently terrorize Darfur. Novelist Dave Eggers, has told his story in What Is the What, a heartrending and astonishing story, filled with adventure, suspense, tragedy and, finally, triumph.

"This is the story of one boy's astonishing capacity to endure atrocity after atrocity and yet refuse to abandon decency, kindness, and hope for home and acceptance. It is impossible to read this book and not be humbled, enlightened, transformed. I believe I will never forget Valentino Achak Deng."-Khaled Hosseini, author of The Kite Runner

Stop in today for tickets to this great evening.

We've recently gotten a big selection of foreign language dictionaries in the store. Beyond the expected French, Spanish, and Italian, we have pocket dictionaries for Greek. Russian, and even Irish. We've even got some copies of the definitive and ever-popular Wheelock's Latin at a steep discount. .

Monday, May 14, 7:30pm, at Magers & Quinn,

The author of the cult hit Trainspotting will appear at Magers & Quinn Booksellers to read from his new novel The Bedroom Secrets of the Master Chefs, and we're doing it up right. Burlesque performers from Le Cirque Rouge will embody the novel's twin themes of food and sex, serving eclairs while dressed in costume.

Irvine Welsh is the author of Trainspotting, The Acid House, Marabou Stark Nightmares, Ecstasy, Filth, Glue, and Porno. Irvine Welsh's latest novel is another transgressive parable--this time about the great obsessions of our time: food, sex, and celebrity.

"[The Bedroom Secrets of the Master Chefs is a] family saga, a revenge fantasy, a Twilight Zone-esque parable, and, most importantly, a very fun read."--Entertainment Weekly
If you've ever loved a book so much that you wanted to crawl between the pages and live there, this story's for you--assuming that book was Martin Chuzzlewit or maybe Oliver Twist. Yes, bookworms, there will soon be a theme park based on the works of Charles Dickens.

The Guardian has all the details. "The centrepiece is a boat ride which, loosely speaking, is Great Expectations presented as a log flume." You can't make this stuff up.

The Guardian's Book Blog is also having fun with the topic, suggesting additional authors who might be ripe for the Six Flags treatment. Knotts Berry Animal Farm, anyone?
We recently acquired a very special book. It's a first edition/first state copy of The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby. This is a rare book, indeed.

What does "first edition/first state" mean? In short, it's the first appearance of a book in print. The first time they fire up the presses, they're printing a first edition.

"First state" is even rarer. A first state copy is one of the very first books to be produced in the first printing. Say, for example, that midway through printing a book, someone notices that there's a typo. If they fix that error, then all the corrected books are second state, even if they're still first editions.

And in fact, there are some errors in the text of this Dickens novel that allow us to be sure that our book is a first state copy. Our copy also has the original illustrations by (I love this name) Phiz. This is the real deal.

Whether you're looking for the newest of the new or the oldest of the old books, we can help you find just what you want.
Has spring got you craving something new and fresh? You're in luck. There are lots of good books coming out in May. Already this month, new releases have included

And later in the month, we'll see some great novels, including Haruki Murakami's After Dark, Khaled Hosseini's A Thousand Splendid Suns, Paulo Coehlo's The Witch of Portobello, and Divisadero from Michael Ondaatje.
Psst... On June 21, we'll be holding a reading and signing with Mike Jones. I know, you don't know who Mike Jones is, so here's the story:

Mike Jones is the Denver masseur who realized that his longtime client was none other than Ted Haggard, then-president of the National Association of Evangelicals, which represents more than 45,000 churches with 30 million members. When Jones told his story last November, Haggard resigned as pastor of the 14,000-member New Life Church in Colorado Springs. Mike has written his memoir about the whole affair, I Had to Say Something, coming out June first.

Pastor Ted has been to counseling and is now "completely heterosexual", but we promise that Mike is not going to be that boring. He'll dish the dirt and you can be there to hear it. Mark June 21 on your calendar. We'll be announcing more details of the event as they become available.
Books & Bars meets at Bryant Lake Bowl, 810 W Lake St, in Minneapolis. Join the Twin Cities' most unusual and interesting book club. The next meeting is Tuesday, March 13. Doors open at 6:00 and the discussion begins at 7:00. Come early for $2 beers and $3 wines and food specials.

This month's book is Absurdistan by Gary Shteyngart. It's a comic novel of post-Soviet Russia. The New York Times called it "immodestly vigorous, so burstingly sure of its barbaric excellence."

Books & Bars is not your typical book club. We provide a unique atmosphere for a lively discussion of interesting authors, fun people, good food and drinks. You're welcome even if you haven't read the book.

There's always something new at Magers & Quinn. Stop in today or check our inventory on our website any time.

We'll be back next month with more book news.

Until then,
