Coehlo's first novel, The
Alchemist was a worldwide phenomenon.
Since it was first published in Brazil in
1988, it has been translated into every major
language--and a few others
as well. It's also one of the books which is
most often shoplifted in Melbourne,
Australia. (Maybe they need the advice. As
the author
himself says, "Everyone seems to have a clear
idea of how other people should lead their
lives, but none about his or her own.")
Coelho followed up with The
Warrior of Light, Eleven
Minutes, and The
Zahir. Each has found swarms of devoted fans.
Mark your calendars. The latest words of
wisdom from the Brazilian bard will be here
soon.

While I'm not a big fan of Google's plan to
capture
all the world's books and put them online, even I
will admit that there's a pretty cool feature
they
offer. Search
for a title, then click the "About this book"
link.
Down towards the bottom of the page is a section
called "Places mentioned in this book" where the
cities and other places mentioned in the text
of the
book are laid out on a Google map.
For example, here are the towns from On
the Road (scroll down to see the maps).
And here
are the locations from Tim
Flannery's The
Eternal Frontier. Not all books listed at
Google
have maps, but looking for those that do can
easily
kill a few slow hours online. Beware.

who like nature. You can just tell."

the 1950s." This event will be held at The
Independent, 3001 Hennepin Ave, Minneapolis.
April will bring events by Mike
Farrell of M*A*S*H and famed doctor and
author Atul

Is the What, comes to Minneapolis for an
evening you won't want to miss.
