Cutting through the winter's chill, Magers and Quinn brings you the latest news from the world of independent bookselling. From the best new books to the best readings, you'll hear it here first.

We have too many books to be moving sections frequently. Still, sometimes we just want to give a subject a new, larger home. So it was that we recently moved our children's and young adult book to a sunnier corner in the back of the store. With big windows and more space than before, it's a great place to browse our huge selection of books for the beginning reader--all of them discounted from the publisher's price.

We have board books for the youngest bookhounds, and picture books for primary schoolers. And kids of all ages browse our selection of used Harry Potter books in anticipation of the July release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the seventh and final installment of the series.

Older kids and teens aren't left out, either. We have the latest novels from Louise Erdrich and Anthony Horowitz, as well as classics including the Hardy boys and Nancy Drew.

We'll be putting our kids' section to good use on Sunday, March 25, 5:00pm, as local author Alison McGhee reads from her new teen novel Falling Boy, in which a small band of tough kids turn the myth of the superhero inside out as they face down the shadows of childhood. Falling Boy is the Talking Volumes pick for March 2007.

It's worth the trip to the back of the store to find great books for younger readers. A captivating book now can be the ticket to a lifetime of happy reading.

If you're like me, February 14 is a black day indeed. Saccharine, cringe-inducing couples crowd the bars and restaurants, canoodling as if it were an Olympic sport. There's not a rose to be had in the town for love or money. And woe betide the partner who forgets to honor the occasion with a suitable gift.

So, if against your own better judgment you're looking for a Valentine's Day gift for a special someone, may I suggest Dating for Dummies? Whether your partner needs a refresher on romance or you just want to put the thrill back into Saturday night in front of the TV, this book will help you out.

I know, it's not a diamond, but hey... we're that kind of bookstore. We're not what you expect; we're what you need.

Minneapolis' Weisman Museum is hosting the upper Midwest's only presentation of "Bob Dylan's American Journey: 1956-1966." This show, organized by the Experience Music Project in Seattle with Dylan's cooperation, brings together film, music, and memorabilia from the early years of Minnesota's most famous troubadour.

And when you're done and you want to keep learning about Hibbing's favorite son, we can help you out. We have a huge rock and roll section, including many Dylan titles. Come in and get a copy of Michael Gray's Bob Dylan Encyclopedia; Its 700 pages cover every aspect of Dylan's life and career. Or start with something smaller: Studio A: The Bob Dylan Reader brings together interviews, poems, and even speeches for a unique portrait of its subject. And there are many, many more books for you in our store. Stop in today.

If once a month is not enough, you can keep up with the latest news from the store on our new blog. I'll be posting articles about new books in the store, upcoming events, and book industry stories.

And please feel free to post your own comments. The blog is a chance to start a conversation with your fellow M&Q fans.

How well do you know Magers and Quinn? Test your knowledge, and you could win a free book

There are Magers all over the store, but who is Quinn? If you know the identity of our store's silent partner, you could win a free book.

The first two correct answers will receive a copy of either Things I Didn't Know or Mao: The Unknown Story.

Send your answer to books@magersandquinn.com. We'll contact you if you're one of this month's winners. Happy sleuthing!
Last month, we told you about a scheduled reading by the Turkish author Elif Shafak. This month, we're sorry to report that this event has been canceled due to concerns for the author's safety.

Publishers Weekly reported, "Accused in her native country of "insulting Turkishness" because of a line uttered by one of her characters in her current novel, Bastard of Istanbul, Shafak is one of a number of writers being prosecuted and persecuted in Turkey for speaking out about the government. According to Paul Slovak at Viking, which published Istanbul in the U.S. in January, Shafak was given a police escort after Turkish-Armenian author and editor Hrant Dink?also charged with the same crime as Shafak (violating article 301 of the Turkish penal code)?was killed last week."

But even if you can't meet the author, you can read the book that's causing all the fuss. The Bastard of Istanbul is still available.

Books & Bars meets at Bryant Lake Bowl, 810 W Lake St, in Minneapolis. Join the Twin Cities' most unusual and interesting book club. The next meeting is Tuesday, January 9. Doors open at 6:00 and the discussion begins at 7:00. Come early for $2 beers and $3 wines and food specials.

This month's book is On Beauty by Zadie Smith. It's Smith's third novel and a 21st century take on E.M. Forster's Howards End. The Washington Post said, "To this satirical, wise and sexy book, the correct critical response should largely be either gratitude and admiration or a simple 'Wow.'"

Books & Bars is not your typical book club. We provide an atmosphere for lively discussion of lesser known authors, good food and drinks. You're welcome to come even if you haven't read the book.

There's always something new at Magers & Quinn. Stop in today or check our inventory on our website any time.

We'll be back next month with more book news.

Until then,
