If you're like me, February 14 is a black day
indeed. Saccharine, cringe-inducing couples crowd
the bars and restaurants, canoodling as if it were
an Olympic sport. There's not a rose to be had in
the town for love or money. And woe betide the
partner who forgets to honor the occasion with a
suitable gift.
So, if against your own better judgment you're
looking for a Valentine's Day gift for a special
someone, may I suggest
Dating for Dummies? Whether your partner needs
a refresher on romance or you just want to put the
thrill back into Saturday night in front of the TV,
this book will help you out.
I know, it's not a diamond, but hey... we're that
kind of bookstore. We're not what you expect; we're
what you need.

Minneapolis' Weisman
Museum is hosting the upper Midwest's only
presentation of "Bob Dylan's American Journey:
1956-1966." This
show, organized by the Experience Music Project in
Seattle with Dylan's cooperation, brings together
film, music, and memorabilia from the early years of
Minnesota's most famous troubadour.
And when you're done and you want to keep learning
about Hibbing's favorite son, we can help you out.
We have a huge rock and roll section, including many
Dylan titles. Come in and get a copy of Michael
Gray's Bob
Dylan Encyclopedia; Its 700 pages cover every
aspect of Dylan's life and career. Or start with
something smaller: Studio
A: The Bob Dylan Reader brings together
interviews, poems, and even speeches for a unique
portrait of its subject. And there are many, many
more books for you in our store. Stop in today.

Last month, we told you about a scheduled reading by
the Turkish author Elif Shafak. This month, we're
sorry to report that this event has been canceled
due to concerns for the author's safety.
Publishers Weekly reported, "Accused in her
native
country of "insulting Turkishness" because of a line
uttered by one of her characters in her current
novel, Bastard of Istanbul, Shafak is one of a
number of writers being prosecuted and persecuted in
Turkey for speaking out about the government.
According to Paul Slovak at
Viking, which published Istanbul in the U.S. in
January, Shafak was given a police escort after
Turkish-Armenian author and editor Hrant Dink?also
charged with the same crime as Shafak (violating
article 301 of the Turkish penal code)?was killed
last week."
But even if you can't meet the author, you can
read the book that's causing all the fuss. The
Bastard of Istanbul is still available.

Books & Bars meets at Bryant Lake Bowl,
810 W Lake St, in Minneapolis. Join the Twin Cities'
most unusual and interesting book club. The next
meeting is Tuesday, January 9. Doors open at 6:00
and the discussion begins at 7:00. Come early for $2
beers and $3 wines and food specials.
This month's book is
On Beauty by Zadie Smith. It's Smith's third
novel and a 21st century take on E.M. Forster's
Howards
End. The Washington Post said, "To
this satirical, wise and sexy book, the correct
critical response should largely be either gratitude
and admiration or a simple 'Wow.'"Books & Bars
is not your typical book club. We
provide an atmosphere for lively discussion of
lesser known authors, good food and drinks. You're
welcome to come even if you haven't read the book.
