Just in time for 2007, Magers and Quinn brings you the latest news from the world of independent bookselling. From the best new books to the coolest readings, you'll hear it here first.

Don't let January trap you indoors. This month's newsletter is filled with great events worth leaving home for. So put on your boots and wind your scarf extra tight, there's a lot to do in the Cities, even in the depths of winter.

You can always find the latest news on our website www.magersandquinn.com. Check our current inventory, order a book, or learn about our upcoming events. Check us out today!

What are your fellow Magers and Quinn afficianados reading this winter? If holiday buyers are any indication, they're reading some good non-fiction, a lot of Minnesota writers, and some great humor.

Our customers are a smart bunch, so it's no surprise that Blink and Barak Obama's The Audacity of Hope topped our bestseller list. And local-interest titles West Bank Boogie and Twin Cities Noir were also very popular. We have a great selection of Minnesota history all year long.

Amy Sedaris' I Like You enlivened many a Christmas, and brother David's recent classic Holidays on Ice reminded us all that whatever else your family tradition entails, at least you don't have to wear an elf suit.

Clearly our customers are nothing if not quirky, and there were a couple of surprise hits. The most unusual of these was Monkey Portraits, a collection of glamour shots of celebrity simians from commercials, TV shows, and movies. It was so successful that the publisher has been unable to keep up with demand, and we're currently out of this title. But we'll be getting more as soon as we can.

While you wait, may we suggest you use the long winter nights to brush up on a foreign language? In particular, we recommend Yiddish with George and Laura. This White House tale will entertain and enlighten at the same time.

If you're shopping for belated Christmas gifts or January birthdays, we've got a lot of ideas for you. Come in today for more great book suggestions.

Join us Wednesday, January 24, at 7:30pm for an evening of laughter with Katherine Lanpher. The journalist, radio host, and now author will be in our store to read from her new memoir Leap Days: Chronicle of a Midlife Move. In chapters covering her search for a new life in New York City, as well as some looks back to her days in Moline, Illinois, and St Paul, Lanpher sketches her life among skyscrapers, not skyways. From finding a decent apartment to dealing with crabby cabbies, you're along for the ride with Lanpher, Gotham-style.

Katherine Lanpher is a writer and broadcaster and the former host of Minnesota Public Radio?s ?Midmorning?? show and its ?Talking Volumes?? series. She now makes her home in New York. Until last fall, she was the co-host of ?The Al Franken Show?? as heard on Air America Radio and seen on the Sundance Channel. She moved to Manhattan from Minnesota to join the show on Leap Day 2004.

Magers and Quinn is pleased to bring you this unique event. The reading is free and open to the public, so please plan to arrive early. It's sure to be a full house. Don't miss it.

You can always find the latest information on all our upcoming events at magersandquinn.com.

This month's trivia question:

Magers and Quinn didn't start in Uptown. The first location was somewhere else in Minneapolis (and it had another name). What neighborhood was home to the the store that would become Magers and Quinn?

The first two correct answers will receive a copy of either Carl Hiaasen's latest novel Nature Girl or Hampton Sides' history of the American West Blood and Thunder. Send your answer to books@magersandquinn.com. We'll contact you if you're one of this month's winners. Happy sleuthing!

Nobel Prize-winner Orhan Pamuk may be the Turkish author of the moment, but there's a lot more great literature coming out of the country today. Although conservatives in the country have worked hard to intimidate authors in the courts, there remains a vibrant and productive literary community.

Many of Turkey's best authors are available in translation. Works by Yasar Kemal, Bilge Karasu, or Elif Shafak all offer a glimpse of Turkey today that you won't soon forget.

And to learn even more, make plans to hear author Elif Shafak speak as part of the Friends of the Minneapolis Public Library's Talk of the Stacks program. She'll be discussing her latest book The Bastard of Istanbul on February 8. The world of literature is right on your doorstep.

Books & Bars meets at Bryant Lake Bowl, 810 W Lake St, in Minneapolis. Join the Twin Cities' most unusual and interesting book club. The next meeting is Tuesday, January 9. Doors open at 6:00 and the discussion begins at 7:00. Come early for $2 beers and $3 wines and food specials.

This month's book is The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell. It's a book that presents a new way of understanding why change so often happens as quickly and as unexpectedly as it does. For example, why did crime drop so dramatically in New York City in the mid-1990's? How does a novel written by an unknown author end up as national bestseller? Why do teens smoke in greater and greater numbers, when every single person in the country knows that cigarettes kill? Why is word-of-mouth so powerful? What makes TV shows like Sesame Street so good at teaching kids how to read? The Tipping Point is an examination of the social epidemics that surround us.

Books & Bars is not your typical book club. We provide an atmosphere for lively discussion of lesser known authors, good food and drinks. You're welcome to come even if you haven't read the book.

There's always something new at Magers & Quinn. Stop in today or check our inventory on our website any time.

We'll be back next month with more book news.

Until then,
