Animals in Translation
Does the thought of cooking dinner for fourteen make you break out in a cold sweat? Does your heart sink when you think of family and friends visiting for the holidays? If so, then we have the book for you.

I Like You : Hospitality Under the Influence and its central tenet ("Accentuate the positives--medicate the negatives") can help turn even the most nervous host into a scintillating party animal.

Packed with tips, recipes, and even crafts, I Like You will get you through the tough social times ahead with grace and style. Plan the perfect Lumberjack Party for forty or just whip out a Li'l Smokey for your next evening in:

Amy Sedaris' Li'l Smokey Cheeseball

2 cups of shredded smoked Gouda cheese
16 ounces of cream cheese
1/2 cup of butter
2 1/2 tablespoons of milk
2 1/2 teaspoons of Steak Sauce
1 cupped of chopped nuts

Bring all ingredients to room temp. Add milk and steak sauce and beat until completely blended. Chill over night. Turn it into a ball the next morning. Roll it in the nut mixture. Serve it room temp, spread on a Ritz cracker.

Get a copy today and face the holidays with confidence and aplomb. And for even more inspiration, you can see Amy Sedaris at the Fitzgerald Theater on Wednesday, November 15 at 8:00pm. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased through Minnesota Public Radio's website.

Whether you need a planner to keep your schedule on track or you want a journal to record your innermost thoughts and dreams, a blank book is a masterpiece waiting to happen. We have a great selection of blank books--from little ones that you can fit in your pocket to large volumes that will be enough for even a budding Proust.

The Paperblanks line of notebooks is full of beautifully bound blank books for any taste. We also have postcards to brighten your correspondence.

New at Magers and Quinn

Notebooks and planners from Moleskine are a great idea for your holiday shopping list. They're a handy gift for anyone on your list who needs a little help staying organized. They're stylish and practical, and all year long they'll remind folks of you.

With so many books out there--and over 80,000 in our store alone--it can be hard to keep track of all the possibilities. To help you sort out the wheat from the chaff, we're pleased to sell both the New York Review of Books and the New York Times Book Review.

We also sell the Minneapolis StarTribune, both the daily and Sunday editions. So stop in today to get all your news and reviews.

This month's trivia question:

The building that houses Magers and Quinn today hasn't always been a bookstore. In its first incarnation, it sold something very, very different. What was this building's original purpose?

The first two correct answers will receive a copy of either Richard Ford's latest novel The Lay of the Land or Gore Vidal's new memoir Point to Point Navigation. Send your answer to books@magersandquinn.com. We'll contact you if you're one of this month's winners. Happy sleuthing!

Sure, our name is Magers and Quinn Booksellers, but if you've been in the store, you know we have plenty of things other than books. We have sheet music and audiobooks and even a few old maps for sale. And a serious collector is always on the lookout for more places to browse.

One great resource for rare books and other printed materials is the Whitney Book & Print Shop. Although they're no longer in Uptown, our former neighbor--now at 42nd and Grand--is still a great place to find beautiful artwork, including antique and collectible prints, maps, and magazines. Check out the Whitney's website to see their inventory or to contact them for help in locating just the right gift for the collector on your Christmas list.
We don't have sales like other stores. We discount all our books everyday. But once a year Magers and Quinn has a sale. And since you're a devoted customer, we want you to know.

On Thanksgiving Day, we'll be offering 20% off everything in the store. This only happens once a year. We'll be open from 1pm to 9pm. So push back from the table and take advantage of this rare opportunity.
Books & Bars is meets at Bryant Lake Bowl, 810 W Lake St, in Minneapolis. Join the Twin Cities' most unusual and interesting book club. The next meeting is Tuesday, November 14. Doors open at 6:00 and the discussion begins at 7:00. Come early for $2 beers, $3 wines and food specials.

This month's book is Survivor by Chuck Pahlaniuk. It's another twisted, gripping story by the author of Fight Club.

Books & Bars is not your typical book club. We provide an atmosphere for lively discussion of lesser known authors, good food and drinks. You're welcome to come us even if you haven't read the book.

There's always something new at Magers & Quinn. Stop in today or check our inventory on our website any time.

We'll be back next month with more book news.

Until then,
