It is our sad duty to report that Lemony Snicket's
series
of unfortunate events is drawing to its final, and
doubtless disturbing, end.
To honor this occasion,
Magers and Quinn is holding a wake. Come share your
memories of the Baudelaire children. Weep at their
passing from the literary scene. And find out their
ultimate fate.
Friday the 13 is the date, naturally.
And on the 13th this 13th
book will be, you guessed it, 13% off. We will
serve lemon(y)ade and cookies, and there will be a
dramatic reading by actor/director Ben Kreilkamp,
and even a Write-Your-Own-Beatrice-Letter contest.
And we'll have copies of all the previous twelve
books to help you round out your collection.
So mark your calendars and save the date. While you
wait, clues to the
can be found, it is rumored, in The
Beatrice Letters. What is Count Olaf's full
name? Who was the real J.S.? What happened to the
man with warts all over his face? All will be
revealed. Come to Magers and Quinn, and be the first
to know.

Lyndale
Congregational United Church of Christ was the
setting last month for a thoughtprovoking evening
with Barbara Ehrenreich, author of Bait
and Switch and Nickel
and Dimed. The noted writer and undercover
reporter spoke at length about the challenges facing
American workers today. She also took questions and
let the audience in a discussion about today's
workplace and job hunting in an age of "downsizing."
Afterwards, Ehrenreich signed books and talked
briefly to audience members individually. Audience
members also mingled with one another, sharing ideas
and continuing the evening's conversation.
And from such meetings, big things can happen. On an
earlier book trip to Minneapolis, Ehrenreich
was approached by a young man who wanted to do more.
Out of that meeting came United
Professionals, a nonprofit, nonpartisan
membership organization for white collar workers
regardless of professional or employment status.
Author events are a great way to connect to your
world. Whether it's asking that nagging question you're
dying to know or learning how to follow up on the
inspiration and motivation you feel when you're
reading, meeting an author lets you make a good book
even better.

Sometimes the stars align and the universe just
pummels you with signs and portents. This month, the
cosmos is saying "John Hodgman" loud and clear.
Hodgman is a reporter for The Daily
Show, the personification of the
PC in Apple's recent string of commercials, and blogger.
Now he even appears in his own promotional
video for his book The
Areas of My Expertise. And if you just can't get
enough of the man, he's
appearing
in St Paul's Fitzgerald Theater on October 6.
You can't avoid John Hodgman this month. At the very
least, you need to get a copy of The
Areas of My Expertise. It's a great read, filled
with fascinating information about hoboes, Jorge
Luis Borjes, Yale University, hoboes, state
nicknames and mottoes,
Colonial era jobs involving eels, and hoboes. And,
just for Minnesotans, Hodgman reveals little-known
"Secrets of the Mall of America."
So stop fighting your destiny. Get up off the couch,
come in our
store, and pick up a
copy of The
Areas of My Expertise. You can't fight it.
