Animals in Translation
Comic strips have come a long way since Charles Schulz first put pen to paper in St Paul and created Peanuts. Today, folks from France to Japan read millions of graphic novels every year. And comics have grown up, dealing with subjects including the Holocaust and 9/11.

Whether you're starting a collection, or looking for that final volume to complete your set, Magers and Quinn has a great range of comics and graphic novels for you. From Superman to manga, you can find what you want here.

And this month, we're pleased to give you the chance to meet one of the world's most interesting graphic novelists. Marjane Satrapi is a fascinating artist whose previous novels, Persepolis, Persepolis II, and Embroideries, have told of her life growing up as a rebellious teenager and becoming a modern Iranian woman. Her latest graphic novel Chicken With Plums takes us back to 1958, telling the story of Satrapi's uncle Nasser Ali Khan, a famous musician. Like her previous novels, this book is a rare and compelling glimpse of a world that is both foreign and familiar.

In conjunction with Rain Taxi Review, Magers and Quinn is proud to sponsor a reading and discussion with Marjane Satrapi, Thursday, October 26, at 7:30pm. This event will be held at Lyndale Congregational United Church of Christ, 801 W 31st St in Minneapolis. Tickets are $5 each and benefit Rain Taxi Review. Stop in our store today and get yours. They're going fast.

It is our sad duty to report that Lemony Snicket's series of unfortunate events is drawing to its final, and doubtless disturbing, end. To honor this occasion, Magers and Quinn is holding a wake. Come share your memories of the Baudelaire children. Weep at their passing from the literary scene. And find out their ultimate fate.

Friday the 13 is the date, naturally. And on the 13th this 13th book will be, you guessed it, 13% off. We will serve lemon(y)ade and cookies, and there will be a dramatic reading by actor/director Ben Kreilkamp, and even a Write-Your-Own-Beatrice-Letter contest. And we'll have copies of all the previous twelve books to help you round out your collection.

So mark your calendars and save the date. While you wait, clues to the can be found, it is rumored, in The Beatrice Letters. What is Count Olaf's full name? Who was the real J.S.? What happened to the man with warts all over his face? All will be revealed. Come to Magers and Quinn, and be the first to know.

Lyndale Congregational United Church of Christ was the setting last month for a thoughtprovoking evening with Barbara Ehrenreich, author of Bait and Switch and Nickel and Dimed. The noted writer and undercover reporter spoke at length about the challenges facing American workers today. She also took questions and let the audience in a discussion about today's workplace and job hunting in an age of "downsizing."

Afterwards, Ehrenreich signed books and talked briefly to audience members individually. Audience members also mingled with one another, sharing ideas and continuing the evening's conversation.

And from such meetings, big things can happen. On an earlier book trip to Minneapolis, Ehrenreich was approached by a young man who wanted to do more. Out of that meeting came United Professionals, a nonprofit, nonpartisan membership organization for white collar workers regardless of professional or employment status.

Author events are a great way to connect to your world. Whether it's asking that nagging question you're dying to know or learning how to follow up on the inspiration and motivation you feel when you're reading, meeting an author lets you make a good book even better.

You already know that Magers and Quinn has great books from around the world. But did you also know that we stock one of the Twin Cities' largest selections of foreign-language titles, too?

Whether you want to brush up on your high school French, German, or Spanish, or you want a novel in Japanese or Somali, or you're planning for a trip abroad, we have just the libro for you. We even have dictionaries of Ojibway and Dakota and books in Latin for you history buffs.

And best of all, we're putting some of our best foreign-language titles on sale this month. Stop in our store in October to get our lowest prices yet on books from around the world.

Sometimes the stars align and the universe just pummels you with signs and portents. This month, the cosmos is saying "John Hodgman" loud and clear.

Hodgman is a reporter for The Daily Show, the personification of the PC in Apple's recent string of commercials, and blogger. Now he even appears in his own promotional video for his book The Areas of My Expertise. And if you just can't get enough of the man, he's appearing in St Paul's Fitzgerald Theater on October 6.

You can't avoid John Hodgman this month. At the very least, you need to get a copy of The Areas of My Expertise. It's a great read, filled with fascinating information about hoboes, Jorge Luis Borjes, Yale University, hoboes, state nicknames and mottoes, Colonial era jobs involving eels, and hoboes. And, just for Minnesotans, Hodgman reveals little-known "Secrets of the Mall of America."

So stop fighting your destiny. Get up off the couch, come in our store, and pick up a copy of The Areas of My Expertise. You can't fight it.

Books & Bars is meets at Bryant Lake Bowl, 810 W Lake St, in Minneapolis. Join the Twin Cities' most unusual and interesting book club. The next meeting is Tuesday, October 10. Doors open at 6:00 and the discussion begins at 7:00. Come early for $2 beers, $3 wines and food specials.

This month's book is Atonement by Ian McEwan. It's a richly textured coming-of-age novel, set in 1935 England by the Booker Prize-winning author of Amsterdam.

Books & Bars is not your typical book club. We provide an atmosphere for lively discussion of lesser known authors, good food and drinks. You're welcome to come us even if you haven't read the book.

There's always something new at Magers & Quinn. Stop in today or check our inventory on our website any time.

We'll be back next month with more book news.

Until then,
