Animals in Translation
Join us at 7pm Thursday, September 14 at the Lyndale Congregational United Church of Christ, 810 W 31st St in Minneapolis for an reading by Barbara Ehrenreich (author of Bait and Switch and Nickel and Dimed), the New York Times bestselling investigation into white-collar unemployment from "our premier reporter of the underside of capitalism" (The New York Times Book Review).

In Bait and Switch, Barbara Ehrenreich goes undercover to explore another hidden realm of the economy: the shadowy world of the white-collar unemployed. Armed with the plausible resume of a professional "in transition," she attempts to land a "middle-class" job. She submits to career coaching, personality testing, and EST-like boot camps, and attends job fairs, networking events, and evangelical job-search ministries. She is proselytized, scammed, lectured, and--again and again--rejected.

Bait and Switch highlights the people who have done everything right--gotten college degrees, developed marketable skills, and built up impressive resumes--yet have become vulnerable to financial disaster. There are few social supports for these newly disposable workers, Ehrenreich discovers, and little security even for those who have jobs. Worst of all, there is no honest reckoning with the inevitable consequences of the harsh new economy; rather, the jobless are persuaded that they have only themselves to blame.

Alternately hilarious and tragic, Bait and Switch is a searing expose of the cruel new reality in which we all now live. We hope you can come to this entertaining and thought-provoking evening.

Even in the age of twenty-four hour news coverage, books are as current as ever. A great case in point is Literature from the "Axis of Evil," a collection of short stories and fictional excerpts by writers from nations including Iraq, North Korea, and Cuba. There's no better way to understand the world than through a good book like this one.

Magers and Quinn always has the latest, most newsworthy books, just waiting for you. Whether you're interested in Hurricane Katrina, terrorism, or George W. Bush, there's a great read waiting for you in our store. Come in today.

Mild-mannered George Hall, despairing over his health, slinks into a depression; his major coping strategies involve hiding behind furniture on all fours and lowing like a cow. It's an odd, slight plot?something like the movie Father of the Bride crossed with Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart"?but it zips along, and Haddon subtly pulls it all together with sparkling asides and a genuine sympathy for his characters.

Magers and Quinn is the best place in town for books on art and design--at discounted prices. In the past few weeks, we've brought in all sorts of books from the great German art publisher Taschen on art, architecture, and design. They're all marked down and they're all here now.

And we've got music covered. Pick up Chuck Klosterman's latest book, Chuck Klosterman IV and the comprehensive Bob Dylan Encyclopedia. And we've also recently received over three thousand books from one of the country's largest source for music books. We have a wide variety of musical styles, musicians, and music instruction. We even have sheet music and songbooks.

We've been working hard lately to add new books to our inventory, so that you can be sure we have the latest and greatest books for you. But we're also proud to still be one of the Twin Cities' largest used bookstores. So even if the book you're looking for is out of print, it might still be available on our shelves.

Where do we get our used books? Most of them come from you, our customers. If you've got stacks of books around the house (and, really, who doesn't?), consider bringing them to Magers & Quinn. We'll look them over, and while we can't take everything, we'll be happy to buy what we can. (See our book-buying policies for more information.) We'll pay cash immediately, or you can take store credit for your books. You can use your credit right away or keep it for up to a year, so you can mull over your choices before you decide.

And for those books we can't take, consider joining Bookmooch. It's a free website that lets people trade books for free. You earn points for each book you trade, and if you don't use your points, you can donate them to send books to charities around the world. It's another great way to get your books to another reader. You can read a full description of Bookmooch and its policies here.
Books & Bars is again meeting at Bryant Lake Bowl, 810 W Lake St, in Minneapolis. Join the Twin Cities' most unusual and interesting book club. The next meeting is Tuesday, September 12. Doors open at 6:00 and the discussion begins at 7:00. Come early for $2 beers, $3 wines and food specials.

This month's book is Goodbye Lemon. It's the story of a man who returns home to care for his elderly father and has to wrestle with all the problems that follow.

Books & Bars is not your typical book club. We provide an atmosphere for lively discussion of lesser known authors, good food and drinks. You're welcome to come us even if you haven't read the book.

There's always something new at Magers & Quinn. Stop in today or check our inventory on our website any time.

We'll be back next month with more book news.

Until then,
