Animals in Translation
Magers and Quinn is proud to announce a reading by Temple Grandin, Monday July 10 at 7pm. She will discuss her newest book Animals in Translation. The event will be at our store in Uptown.

In her earlier book Thinking in Pictures Temple Grandin showed us how the autistic mind works. In Animals in Translation. she uses her unique genius to propose that animals, like autistic humans, think in pictures.

"I don't know if people will ever be able to talk to animals the way Doctor Doolittle could, or whether animals will be able to talk back. Maybe science will have something to say about that. But I do know people can learn to "talk" to animals, and to hear what animals have to say, better than they do now."--From Animals in Translation.

Why would a cow lick a tractor? Why are collies getting dumber? Why do dolphins sometimes kill for fun? How can a parrot learn to spell? How did wolves teach man to evolve? Temple Grandin draws upon a long, distinguished career as an animal scientist and her own experiences with autism to deliver an extraordinary message about how animals act, think, and feel. She has a perspective like that of no other expert in the field, which allows her to offer unparalleled observations and groundbreaking ideas.

People with autism can often think the way animals think, putting them in the perfect position to translate "animal talk." Grandin is a faithful guide into their world, exploring animal pain, fear, aggression, love, friendship, communication, learning, and, yes, even animal genius. The sweep of Animals in Translation. is immense and will forever change the way we think about animals.

Recently, the StarTribune ran an article about two local poets--Greg Hewett and Sarah Fox. We can't help but notice that Magers and Quinn sponsored events for both of these folks this spring.

Greg Hewett read from his book The Eros Conspiracy in our store in April.

And that same month we hosted the publication party for Sarah Fox's first book Because Why at the Suburban World Theatre.

Magers and Quinn brings you the best literary talent. Stay ahead of the curve by checking out our upcoming events on our website.

From local-boy-made-good Bob Dylan to The Ramones to the best in classical music, we can satisfy any musical taste.

We also have sheet music, for those of you who play more than just the radio. And there are music instruction books to get you started if you haven't dusted off your drumset in a while. Come in today.
With the loss of our neighbor, Borders Bookshop, we want to be your full-service neighborhood bookstore. Please feel free to offer ideas for titles and subjects you would like to see in our store. We want to be sure we have the books you want.

We appreciate your business and look forward to hearing your suggestions. Talk to a staff member the next time you're in the store. Or email us at info@magersandquinn.com.
Books and Bars is not your typical book club. We provide an atmosphere for lively discussion of lesser known authors, good food and drinks. You're welcome to attend even if you haven't read the book.

Join us the second Tuesday of every month at Bryant Lake Bowl, located at the intersection of Bryant Avenue and Lake Street in Uptown, Minneapolis.

July's book is The Devil in the White City, an account of the Chicago World's Fair of 1893 relates the stories of two men who shaped the history of the event--architect Daniel H. Burnham, who coordinated its construction, and serial killer Herman Mudgett. It's a great read!

There's always something new at Magers & Quinn. Stop in today or check our inventory on our website any time.

We'll be back next month with more book news.

Enjoy your summer,
