EECP Treatment

"Confidence". That's the word that comes to mind when I come to the Institute [for Progressive Medicine]. Confidence in my health and the people here who help me become well. I've been a patient since 2001.

Recently I completed 35 EECP treatments for cardiovascular problems involving my heart. I was in danger of heart failure and invasive surgery to treat it. I did these 4-5 treatments a week along with chelation therapy.

My energy increased. I no longer required taking nitroglycerin daily. The technicians were very pleasant and patient with me. They made the procedure less boring and only slightly uncomfortable for me.

I have recommended this type of answer to what I was going through. Not only that, but many illnesses that would not require EECP should be brought to this institute for evaluation and treatment.

The personnel, atmosphere and success makes coming here a joy." -P.D.

Osteoporosis and Hormone Therapy

"Because of the suggestion by Dr. Sosin, I received hormone pellet therapy and started on natural oral progesterone. I have had spinal surgery and osteoporosis diagnosed as well. My bone mass has improved by 15% in one year in my spine, which now puts me out of the osteoporotic range. Needless to say, I am grateful for this improvement. I also have incredible energy. Because of my energy level, I am able to hike, bike, and work out two hours per day at the gym. I also had sleeping difficulties in the past which have been resolved by the progesterone." -L.E.

omega3Omega-3 Fatty Acids Simplified
Gelcaps

Omega-3 fatty acids are essential fatty acids, meaning humans and other animals must ingest them for good health because the body requires them but can't make them from other food components. The term refers to fatty acids required for biological processes, and not those that only act as fuel. Often sourced from fish oils and flax seed oils, essential fatty acids have been heavily researched in the medical community. Numerous articles in the medical literature support the use of omega-3 fatty acids, especially from fish sources, in the prevention and treatment of chronic disease.

Omega-3 vs. Omega-6 Oils

The position of chemical bonds in a fatty acid molecule determines the name of the molecule. Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids are the most important types. Over the past 100 years a dramatic change in our diet has occurred. We have invented an industry of prepared foods made in factories and shipped to consumers via supermarkets. With this "invention", product shelf-life became a premium. Essential fatty acids, on the other hand, kill shelf-life because they have a tendency to go rancid when exposed to heat, light and oxygen. At the same time, large commercial oil manufacturers began producing the refined vegetable oils we are now so familiar with. Currently, 4 oils (soybean, cottonseed, corn, and canola) account for 96% of the vegetable oil use in the U.S. The omega-6 to omega-3 ratio of these combined oils is between 12:1 and 25:1. An estimate of the omega-6 to omega-3 ratio in our diet 100 years ago is between 3:1 and 5:1. This dramatic shift away from omega-3 and toward omega-6 oil consumption is thought to be one of the leading factors in the rise of chronic illnesses, especially cardiovascular diseases over the past century. Modern agricultural practices have a dramatic effect on the essential fatty acid ratios of animal products. For example, a free-range chicken egg has a omega-6 to omega-3 ratio of 1:3, while a corn fed USDA chicken egg has an omega-6 to omega-3 ratio of 19:4. To regain a balanced essential fatty acid ratio in our diet is almost impossible without supplementing our diets with high levels of omega-3 containing oils such as flaxseed oil or concentrated fish oil supplements.

Why Take Fish Oil Over Flaxseed Oil?

Flaxseed and other plant-based foods including walnuts, canola oil, and soybeans are rich in an omega-3 fatty acid called ALA. However, flaxseed lacks the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, which have been directly linked to beneficial cardiovascular and neurologuical effects. The human body can convert ALA from flaxseed oil into EPA and DHA, but the conversion is not very efficient and very high doses of flaxseed oil are required to convert to even modest amounts of EPA and DHA. It is much easier to supplement EPA and DHA directly in the form of fish oils.

About Quality and Purity

The quality of the fish oil supplements you choose is very important. Low quality fish oils that are not processed properly and lack chemical testing can contain harmful contaminants. These include toxic heavy metals such as mercury arsenic and cadmium and organic toxins such as PCBs and pesticides. In addition, many commercial fish oils can be made in large batches and stored in a warehouse for many months, sometimes in high heat. Improper, long-term storage can lead to rancid oils that are actually detrimental to health.

The Institute for Progressive Medicine carries a variety of pharmaceutical grade fish oils that are sourced from smaller fish and squid from the cleanest waters in the North Sea. They are then molecularly distilled to remove any trace amounts of contamination and leave you with the purest, natural product. Our oils are also tested by a third party laboratory to guarantee purity and antioxidant stabilized to help prevent oxidation and rancidity. Small stock and quick turn around means you will always receive the freshest product available.

How to Select a Fish Oil

Mega Omega products at the institute for Progressive Medicine provide several options for supplementation of omega-3 fatty acids in the forms of EPA and DHA.

Mega Omega Balance is our most popular fish oil offering a near 1:1 ration of EPA to DHA. This product is ideal for patients with multiple chronic illnesses, or those who wish to take a fish oil to help avoid chronic disease. It is also good for blood sugar metabolism, and pregnancy and child development. This product is available in 60 and 180 count bottles.

Mega Omega EPA Select favors EPA over DHA. Higher doses of EPA have been shown in clinical trials to be more effective for patients needing nutritional support for depression, anxiety as well as inflammatory conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, inflammatory skin conditions and inflammatory autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis. Using a product with higher EPA levels can help reduce the number of capsules needed to achieve a therapeutic effect. This product is available in 60 count bottles

Mega Omega DHA Select favors DHA over EPA. Higher doses of DHA have been shown in clinical trials to be more effective for patients needing cardiovascular, cognitive and ocular support. Using a product with higher DHA levels can help reduce the number of capsules needed to achieve a therapeutic effect. This exclusive formula is sourced from white calamari, providing a very clean tasting and environmentally responsible oil. A light natural lemon flavor is added. This product is available in 90 count bottles.

Mega Omega Pearls is a fish oil formula designed for young children. This product offers a slightly higher DHA to EPA ratio, which is beneficial for neurological development.  Natural orange-berry flavor improves taste and small capsules are easier to chew or swallow. This product is available in 120 count bottles.

Mega Omega Enteric Coated is specially designed for patients who are sensitive to fish oil supplements. Even with pure fish oils, some patients have trouble with repeating and burping. Enteric coating prevents this issue because the capsules dissolve in the intestine instead of the stomach. If you have had difficulty taking fish oil in the past, you will want to try this product. Mega Omega Enteric Coated has a similar EPA:DHA ratio to our Mega Omega Balance formula.

Liquid Fish Oils are also available and are excellent for children and adults who cannot take capsules, or as an addition to smoothies. For more information, please call reception at (949) 600-5100.

eecpEnhanced External Counterpulsation
for Heart Disease

EECP

Many of our patients with heart disease have heart failure or angina pectoris. Heart failure is the inability of the heart to supply sufficient blood flow to meet the body's needs. Heart failure can cause a variety of symptoms such as shortness of breath (typically worse when lying flat, which is called orthopnea), coughing, ankle swelling and exercise intolerance. Often patients experience an excess amount of fluid in the lungs, producing shortness of breath and sometimes reduced oxygen levels in the blood.

Angina is mild to severe chest pain caused by a reduced blood flow to the heart due to blockage or spasm of the coronary arteries feeding the heart muscle. Angina can be experienced as pain or tightness in the chest, but can also include radiating pain or tightness in the jaw, shoulders and arms.

Heart disease is still the number one cause of death in the United States. Patients with cardiovascular disease are concerned because many would like to avoid surgery but don't know what to do about their symptoms or are being pressured by other physicians to move ahead with an invasive procedure. On inspection a majority of cardiac patients do not need an invasive procedure to improve or eliminate their symptoms. This is where EECP can be a viable aternative.

EECP is completely noninvasive and requires no anesthesia or recovery time. A set of inflatable cuffs is placed around the legs and pelvis. The cuffs are sequentially inflated from the bottom up, under high pressure. This causes the arteries and veins in the lower extremities to collapse and forces the blood upwards toward the heart. A wave of pressure then proceeds into the heart and into the coronary arteries. The result is a significant increase in cardiac blood flow. After a series of treatments, usually 35, 1-hour in length, collateral blood vessels develop around the heart, creating a natural bypass around the occluded vessels. The response rate for patients suffering from angina is around 80 percent, with none of the risks of open-heart surgery or angioplasty.

EECP
Figure showing the action of EECP cuff inflation during treatment

Recently, we have been treating a number of patients with congestive heart failure and angina pectoris using Enhanced External Counterpulsation (EECP) Therapy. Many of these patients have had previous cardiac bypass surgery or stent placement and continue to have symptoms, others are looking for a non-invasive alternative to cardiac surgery. The results have been remarkable. Those who complete a full course of therapy report increased energy, markedly reduced or eliminated chest pain or shortness of breath, improved sleep patterns and a general feeling of well being. Patients who receive EECP are often able to reduce or eliminate some pharmaceutical medications. Blood sugar control in those with diabetes can also improve and insulin doseages may need to be reduced.

Research Shows Diet and Exercise Programs Are Even More Effective when Condition-specific Nutrition is Added

It affects one in three adults, yet most don't even realize it. Doctors are stymied about how to treat it. Billions of dollars are spent on it - unnecessarily.

"It" is metabolic syndrome - the simultaneous occurrence of any three or more of the following five conditions: high blood pressure, high blood sugar, abdominal obesity, low HDL ("good") cholesterol, or high triglycerides-that results from years of poor lifestyle choices, including unhealthy diets and lack of exercise. Having metabolic syndrome significantly increases your risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and a host of other serious illnesses.

Now, preliminary results of research conducted by three major universities and sponsored by San Clemente, California-based life sciences company, Metagenics, Inc., provides evidence of the power of condition-specific nutrients in addressing metabolic syndrome. All of the subjects underwent 12 weeks of lifestyle therapy including a low glycemic load Mediterranean-style diet and regular, moderate exercise. While all subjects appear to show improvement in metabolic syndrome and risk factors for heart disease, those who additionally consumed Metagenics' UltraMeal® PLUS 360 Medical Food twice a day appear to show even greater improvements, particularly in LDL-C, non-HDL-C, apolipoprotein B, and Apo B/A-1 ratio.

Ultra Meal Plus 360Medical foods are specially formulated to nutritionally manage a specific disease state. Among the key ingredients in UltraMeal PLUS 360 are soy protein, plant sterols, and proprietary extracts from hops and acacia. Soy protein has been shown to have cholesterol-lowering effects and may reduce the risk of heart disease. Plant sterols have been shown to promote healthy cholesterol levels, and also may help reduce the risk of heart disease. As for hops and acacia, "After testing hundreds of plant-based bioactives, we chose the extracts from hops and acacia for their powerful therapeutic effects as selective kinase response modulators (SKRMs) and for their excellent safety profiles," said Metagenics Chief Science Officer Jeffrey Bland, PhD, FACN, CNS.

"The research findings indicate that this combination of plant-based nutrients can be a powerful enhancement to lifestyle therapy," said Bland. "We're excited that this research could provide the basis for a new approach to managing metabolic syndrome and the many chronic illnesses related to it."

A New Chronic Illness Treatment Model

Surveys indicate that physicians feel ill-equipped to help their patients make significant lifestyle changes that will improve their health. Rather, their training and education prepare them to prescribe multiple drugs or even surgery. But winning the war on metabolic syndrome and its attendant chronic illnesses may require a new model of patient care.

"In the U.S. alone more than 50 million people have metabolic syndrome," said Bland. "But few have access to lifestyle therapy, even though most major public health organizations endorse it." To make the benefits of lifestyle therapy available to the millions of Americans who need it, Metagenics has developed a program called FirstLine Therapy®, which teaches healthcare providers and staff members how to educate and coach their patients through a program of healthy eating and regular, moderate exercise.

Already, more than 4,300 health care providers and lifestyle educators have been trained in the FirstLine Therapy system. According to Metagenics, many report improved patient outcomes as well as a greater degree of professional satisfaction from being able to transform their patients' health, often without the use of multiple prescription drugs or surgery.

"We still have a long way to go to meet our mission of reversing the effects of chronic illness on American families and on the economy," notes Bland. "But the science, the tools and the products to help healthcare providers and their patients transform their health are already here."
