Greetings & A Happy New Year From AOIFE
Hi to all our readers and subscribers which topped over 2000 in the last quarter of last year ! A Happy New Year to you all.
January has been a tumultuous month politically, which has reverbations for all of us. As an Affiliate organisation of the National Campaign for the Arts and a member of the steering committee we are pledging an active and engaged role in pre election hustings. We urge you all indivudally to do the same. There is no guarantee that a new programme for Government will maintain a full Minister at Cabinet for Arts, Culture and Tourism and we have to keep explaining and canvassing ALL political opinions as to the critical importance of the work we do and the huge contribution our sector makes. Follow the Campaign on the web and don't be afraid to speak up .
In the North - we'd encourage all of you to write to the Minster and Officials involved in trying to stave off the horrendous proposed Arts Spending Cuts - a template letter is available on the Arts Council Web Site .
Please try as you plan your festivals and events for this year to
a) get to one of the various AOIFE training Roadshows in a region near you
b) if you did not get delegates to the Annual Conf -please try and attend the Community Festivals Networking Day in Ballinasloe on the 27th of March
c) If you are not or have not used recently our Insurance Scheme - please at LEAST give Claire and the team at O' Driscoll O' Neill an opportunity to quote for your business. In our next ezine we will have some news from the sector on an online quotation process which will speed up decision making .
Colm , Eileen, Claire

Failte Ireland: 2010 Review / 2011 Prospects

The End of Season Review and Outlook for 2011 was presented by Shaun Quinn, CEO Fáilte Ireland and Redmond O' Donoghue, Chairman of Fáilte Ireland who looked back on Ireland's performance last year presenting some of the latest tourism figures for 2010. 2010 Year in Review The key message delivered at Fáilte Ireland's End of Season Review and Outlook for 2011, was that while tourism should recover somewhat in 2011, the performance of our biggest overseas market - Britain - would be central to the timing and scale of any recovery. 2011 Tourism Prospects Looking at the prospects of the tourism industry for 2011 Fáilte Ireland's CEO, Shaun Quinn, emphasised that the performance of the year ahead will hinge on our overseas markets and that while opportunities exist within our key markets exploiting them will require hard work. Privitizing the festivals could be ticket to better bookings
It's hard to imagine the city turning down the sole bidder to run Taste of Chicago and its other outdoor summer festivals.
Given the qualifications of the bidder - Celebrate Chicago, a partnership that includes experienced concert promoters Jam Productions and AEG Live, plus the Illinois Restaurant Association - accepting the bid would offer a way for the city not just to trim its budget but also to improve the musical quality of its downtrodden summer festivals.

Sponsorship Spending: 2010 Proves Better Than Expected: Bigger Gains Set for 2011
The dawn of 2011 marks the sponsorship industry's return to full health.
A year ago, sponsors, properties, agencies and others in the business were lamenting the fact that less money was spent on corporate partnerships in 2009 than in the previous year, a never-before-seen circumstance.
And while it can't be said it will never happen again, '09's contraction in annual spending remains for now an anomaly. The 26th annual year-end industry review and forecast from IEG shows that sponsorship expenditures by North American companies grew 3.9 percent in 2010 to $17.2 billion. Spending globally grew 5.2 percent to $46.3 billion.
Both sets of figures were ahead of IEG's projections made a year ago. At the end of 2009, North American spending was forecast to rise 3.4 percent and worldwide budgets were predicted to grow 4.5 percent.

Remembering Chuck Ward
AOIFE's National Executive Staff and members wish to extend our deepest
sympathies to one of Milwaukee's champion Irish Ambassadors, a member of the Blarney Band and indeed one of the key architects of the original Festival format,
who passed away in early November.
Chuck was deeply committed to his family, his professional career , his ancestry, culture and music and was hugely involved like all festival people; in a variety of causes and groups significant to his local Wisconsin community. He was a prominent delegate to all the Irish Fest Gatherings since the first one was
held in Milwaukee and was critically on the deputation that petitioned for various agency supports in Dublin in November 2009 . He so much wanted to come to Ireland
in November - it was cruel when about 10 days out from travel, he had to withdraw.
There was some symmetry when Minister O' Cuiv announced to a shocked Dinner at the Final Awards Banquet in Ballinasloe on the 5th of November; that Chuck had just a few short moments before we gathered; lost his heroic battle with cancer. His Milwaukee Fest Board Members & colleagues were naturally devastated with the news but it was poignant that they and the wider Irish & Celtic Festival Producing community were all together to support each other when the news was announced. Whilst the remainder of the tour was followed it was with heavy hearts and a more somber atmosphere
For a more fulsome eulogy and background to a colossus of a generous and optimistically cheerful man please click here
His endearing generosity, encouragement and ability to share the passion and the know how of how to produce and engage quality Irish performers and bands will be
sorely missed by this community. To his wife Cathy, son Colin ,daughter Bridget , his sister Colleen and brother Ed our deepest sympathies and condolences are extended.
Ar Dheis De go raibh a hAnam dilis.

Michaela Mc Areavey RIP
AOIFE's National Executive , Staff and members wish to extend our deepest
sympathies to the family of Michaela Mc Areavey , who died in unspeakably tragic circumstances on honeymoon in Mauritius - earlier this month.
In particular we wish to offer our support to her Father in Law Brendan who was a valued member of the AOIFE National Executive - 2002 to 2005 .
Brendan is the principal behind the family business " Fun and Games " a longstanding corporate member and supplier of a variety of event and festival sideshow attractions and games of skill. We hope that in time he, his son John and wider Harte and Mc Areavey families including his the Brother the Bishop of Dromore ( who was a guest of honour at the 30th Milwaukeee Festival last August) will find solace and strength from the memory of Michaela and the huge outpouring of support and grief by all on the island for their loss
