Throughout most of history, only the wealthy have been able to afford an education geared to the individual learner...now for the first time it is possible to individualize education-to teach each person what he or she needs and wants to know, in ways that are most comfortable and most efficient, producing a qualitative spurt in educational effectiveness." This article summarizes a presentation given by Sir Ken Robinson. The writer quotes excerpts from his speech, "Changing Education Paradigms." Here are a couple of them:
"We are getting our children through education by anesthetizing them...we shouldn't be putting them to sleep; we should be waking them up to what they have inside of themselves...Schools are still organized in factory lines: ringing bells...specialized into separate subjects. We still educate children by batches. We put them through the system by age group...It is increasingly about conformity and increasingly it is about that growth of standardized testing and standardized curricula...I believe we've got to go in the opposite direction." Did you ever wish that you could have chosen the courses that appealed to you in high school - courses that focused on your interests, talents, career goals - topics that were exciting to you?
