Greetings!
We had a wonderful time at Landmark Academy in Port Huron, MI during the last 2 weeks of May. As always, we were welcomed warmly and made to feel right at home. The staff continues to learn about and implement LearningSuccess teaching methods and communication strategies, that lead to successful learning experiences for EVERY child!

 Summer Is Break Time!
We are often asked what parents can do in the summer to help kids retain what they've learned during the school year. Should we practice math flash cards or spelling words, require daily reading, enroll in enrichment classes?
We say, take a break!
Why? Because everybody needs one - you do and so do your kids.
If you're not convinced think about this: Where skills are concerned, it's like riding a bike - once you can do it you never forget.
Once you know how to add or subtract, you can't forget. Once you can read, you can't forget. If you have a child that remembers a word one day and not the next, that means that child never really learned the word in the first place. He or she is guessing. If your child can do the equations when he has a whole page of them, then can't the next day, it's because he never really understood how to do those equations. Continuing to do this type of "practice" is useless. In these cases the program or methods need to change in order to meet the learning style needs of the child, so the child really can learn these skills.
But isn't there anything you can do to keep their brains sharp, you ask? Yes! Do real-life things together. When you cook, you are using fractions. If you re-do a room you have to figure out area for paint and flooring. Is your child saving up for something - she can figure out how much more she needs and how long it will take to earn it. Go to the store and add up the items to make sure you don't go over a certain amount. Visit museums, exhibits, art galleries. Use Information Mapping to discuss, plan, and record your experiences. Or the kids can each make movies, keep scrapbooks or journals, put together a photo album, figure the mileage for vacation destinations, plan a route on the map...the possibilities are endless.
These are all ways of integrating "school" with real-life - then math, reading, geography, and all the other subjects become relevant and your child will remember these lessons far longer than with flash cards or a worksheet.
Above all have fun! There is nothing better than having fun while learning and learning while having fun!
We often forget that fun and play are basic needs - for the kids and for the adults. We wish you all a healthy, enjoyable summer that is relaxing, rejuvenating, and filled with good memories.
