LearningSuc cess Law #3: Coaching Brings Out the Star
Have you seen the movie The Blind Side? In once scene the Coach can't get Michael to do what he is supposed to during the practice, and Leigh Ann comes down off the bleachers, across the field, and says to the Coach, Yelling at him doesn't work, you have to find out what works for him. And later, You should get to know your players better - he scored in the 98 percentile in protective instinct!
Well, that is a perfect example of our 3rd LearningSuccess Law: Coaching Brings Out the Star.
How well do you know your kids? If you are a classroom teacher or a home school teacher, how well do you know your individual students?
A great Coach gets to know the players well - whether on the football field, the classroom, at home. or even on the job...and then uses the information to bring out the very best in each of those individuals!
What are the characteristics of this type of Coach? They... - focus on solutions
- identify goals together with the player/student
- always track successes rather than failures
- take the pressure off when needed
We believe that #4 is the most difficult in our education culture. We seem to think that the way to get results is to push, push, push, force, force, force. This is another lesson to take from the sports world that is emphasized in The Blind Side:
- The quarterback has a blind side (weakness).
- The quarterback needs protection on his blind side.
- No one tries to teach/make the quarterback focus on his blind side during play, he is simply given protection for his blind side.
Every student has a blind side or weakness. Students have different strengths and weaknesses. It is the job of the Learning Coach (teacher) to provide protection for the weaknesses and strategies to facilitate the strengths. How?
By implementing the 4 actions listed above: focus on solutions, identify goals together, track successes, take the pressure off when needed. Of course, you will be the most effective with these actions when you get to know your students better:
The more we work with kids' learning styles and developmental levels, the more successful they will be.
Here is one of our favorite quotes, taken from The Power of Focus, by Canfield, Hansen and Hewitt:
"...Often, children are told to focus on their weaker subjects and not spend so much time on the ones they do well in...Wrong!...this doesn't give you a competitive edge in the marketplace or position you to be wealthy. It just keeps you average. In fact, it's an absolute insult to your integrity to major in minor things."
So, put LearningSuccess Law #3 into practice and become a LearningSuccess Coach who brings out the star in every child!
