HEADWATERS FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES 2012 ALLIES FOR JUSTICE AWARDS

 

 

MINNEAPOLIS, MN- April 4, 2012:   The Headwaters Foundation for Justice announces its 14th annual Allies for Justice Awards, this year honoring work for sustainable development in rural Minnesota and LGBT equality throughout the state.  Each of this year's award winners has made significant contributions to tipping the scales into balance in these arenas.

 

This year's Awards recognize the contributions of: The Main Street Project, OutFront Minnesota, and Ruth and David Waterbury.  The Main Street Project is a grassroots cultural organizing, media justice and economic development initiative working to help diverse rural communities face today's realities with hope.  In its short history, the Main Street Project has been has been an effective partner in rural enterprise development and successfully advocating to keep Internet, low-power FM and broadband technology accessible for rural communities.  OutFront Minnesota is the leading voice for LGBT equality in the state.  In its 25-year history, the organization has helped secure partner benefits for state employees, promoted recent changes in the "Respectful Learning Environment - Curriculum Policy," in the Anoka-Hennepin County School District, prevented a marriage amendment from getting on the ballot in the mid-2000s and is once again working to prevent the amendment from being incorporated into the state constitution.  David and Ruth Waterbury have been long-time advocates for equality in Minnesota as volunteers with and supporters of a number of LGBT locally and nationally.  They have been actively involved with the Headwaters Foundation for nearly two decades. 

 

"This year's honorees exemplify the breadth of work Headwaters Foundation supports," said Executive Director Trista Harris.  "We are proud to be associated with organizations and individuals like these that are dedicated to promoting economic and social equality in our state."

 

Award recipients will be honored in a celebration Wednesday, May 16 at the Nicollet Island Pavilion (40 Power Street, Minneapolis).
