"Water is everything. Once you have water you have hope for tomorrow,"
Alice Nirere from Ntarama village, Rwanda, after receiving a new rainwater harvesting system
Dear Friend of AWRA,
Ever wondered what's on the minds of thirteen year olds? Dick Engberg, AWRA's Technical Director, presented at an 8th grade environmental education seminar near our offices in Middleburg VA the other day. Here's a sampling of what the students he talked with had to say: - Water has to be conserved. It's worth more than people think.
- It seems we're blind when it comes to the earth; not able to see all of the damage we're causing
- I will remember to cut down on the amount of water and energy I use. Our generation should leave the planet a better place.
- If we are polluting the planet, we are just hurting ourselves and the environment.
- We cannot wait for others - we must take the first step and change ourselves.
- We are just temporary guests on the earth. We have learned how delicate and beautiful the earth is; how we need to be good guests.
- We, the next generation, need to figure out a way to protect water because the whole world depends on it.
- I've discovered that everyone can make a difference. But we must first wake up and see the changes that need to be happening now.
If you know a young person that has an opinion about water and the environment, please pass it on to me. It might be nice to share. In terms of news and announcements for the month of May, here are a few of the topics covered in the Announcement sections below and in the Media of Water to the left. - Winners of AWRA's 2012 Annual Awards ... Congratulations!
- Call for Special Sessions for AWRA's Agricultural Hydrology and Water Quality Spring Specialty Conference in March 2013
- Notice that June 4th is the last day for the early bird rates for the two Summer Conferences in Denver
- Information on EPA's new benchmarks for pesticides that are causing some controversy
- Survey showing that a majority of Europeans believe water issues are serious
- Study revealing a wide-spread decline of hemlock trees may have serious consequences for aquatic ecosystems
- New invention by teenager turns raindrops into energy
- The Director of NASA's Goddard Institute warning of carbon emissions from the tar sands reserves
All the best, Mary 540.687.8390
Mary@awra.org P.S. Although I'll be out of the office May 28 - June 1, please still call AWRA with questions or membership issues.
