The E-Newsletter of the

American Water Resources Association

April 2012

"A nation that fails to plan intelligently for the development and protection of its precious waters will be condemned to wither because of its shortsightedness. The hard lessons of history are clear, written on the deserted sands and ruins of once proud civilizations."

Lyndon B. Johnson,36th President of the United States,
Letter to the President of the Senate and to the Speaker of the House
Transmitting an Assessment of the Nation's Water Resources, 18 Nov 1968

Dear Friend of AWRA,

The Social Conquest of Earth is Edward O. Wilson's new book.

You may remember Professor Wilson as the ant guy, the originator of sociobiology, the mild mannered and brilliant two time Pulitzer Prize winning scientist who has been advocating biodiversity preservation for more than fifty years. Now, in bold and artful style, Wilson takes on the human "ant." He argues that our species' tendency towards cooperation, collaboration, and success can only be explained by an evolution that has always favored groups that work together altruistically.  How we choose groups and naturally work among groups is key he says.

Although I'm still working through the chapters, I'm keenly aware of the common thread between Wilson's insight and that of our AWRA founders and evolving community: a joining of members from different professional groups who have chosen to learn and network together for the purpose of advancing multidisciplinary solutions - an immensely practical activity which is also altruistic.

As Wilson's highly nuanced writing suggests, this joining together should not only make a difference in how well water resources are managed on a day to day basis and into the future but contributes to our evolution as a more socially evolved species - and association!

This month's socially evolving newsletter includes:

  • Important AWRA announcements about award nominations and upcoming elections and conferences.  We welcome award nominations from friends as well as members.  (See below. Award nomination due date is Friday, May 4th

  •  Several short water related videos including two that you might find entertaining and uplifting. (Look to your very top and very bottom on the left.)

  • Lots of news and updates including information on:

    -  Asteroids being mined for water

    -  Western U.S. water supply for the next 100 years

    -  India's new water plan

    -  New report on antibiotics in groundwater

    -  Plastic pollution and prevention efforts

    -  Assessing health of streams in agricultural areas

    -  What is an "emerging decontaminant"?

  • Thanks so much for reading.
