Rising Sea Levels Seen as Threat to Coastal Areas

Hydrometeorology & Water Resource Management
Here's a recent article on hydrometeorology and its implications for agriculture from Professor Pierre Gentine at Columbia Universities Water Center (CWC). Gentine is developing a new conceptual model to understand the daily cycle of clouds and precipitation over land.

ANNOUNCEMENTS IWRM: AWRA's Board of Directors has established a new annual award for Integrated Water Resources Management. Information is available on AWRA's website under About Us/AWRA Awards. Nominations need to be submitted by May 4, 2012. Other announcement on AWRA awards and conferences are included below.  The United Nations and other international landmarks will observe "Earth Hour" on Saturday March 31 by turning off the lights for one hour.
 On March 27, EPA proposes carbon pollution standard for Future Power Plants. For news release, click here.
Using green infrastructure to improve Urban Waters. EPA is accepting letters of interest for projects using green infrastructure to protect water quality. The assistance is approximately $950,000 and will be distributed among 10-20 projects. For more information and to the link to the Request for Letters of Interest (PDF), click here. On March 2, EPA announced a Urban Waters Federal Partnership made up of 11 federal agencies that will work with communities to accelerate and coordinate efforts to improve water quality, public health, restoring forest resources,and fostering community stewardship in urban watersheds. EPA announced the availability of funds to deliver environmental workforce development and job training programs that recruit, train, and place local, unemployed and under-employed residents. Proposals are due April 12, 2012. http://1.usa.gov/xWHNWi EPA has established a new webpage - www.epa.gov/cleanwater40 as the central location for information, activities, news and networking.
On March 21, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar announced that Interior's Bureau of Reclamation is providing $2.4 million in funding for comprehensive water studies in California, Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico and Oklahoma.
6th World Water Forum Update For a brief summary of AWRA's activities at the World Water Forum in Marseille, France.click here. This report was prepared for the purpose of presenting the story of water management in the U.S. American West to the international water community at the 6th World Water Forum. Time for Solutions: Submission to the 6th World Water Forum by the Indigenous World Forum on Water and Peace  The National Academies' Abel Wolman distinguished Lecture with Dr. Michael Kavanaugh, Principal Geosyntec Constants: "Trade Offs in Water Quality Mangement: Risk, Economics, Equity" will take place April 10 2012, 4 pm Washington DC. The National Academies' Christine Mirzayan Science & Technology Policy Graduate Fellowship Program is now accepting applications for it's Fall 2012 session, August 27 - November 16.

On Tuesday, April 24, 2012 there will be a web demonstration of the EcoSpatial Information Database by Keld Madsen and Daniel Hearn of AMEC. This database contains ecological information for the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management's (BOEM) Atlantic Planning areas on the Outer Continental Shelf of the East Coast of theUnited States.

Up to three photos and three poems will be selected for recognition. Poems should be no longer than 14 lines. The submission deadline for both is April 20. USGS finds new SPAtially Reference Regression On Watershed attributes (SPARROW) models target areas for water quality improvements. Findings are available through the October online and paper version of JAWRA (the Journal of the American Water Resources Association).
