"Every post is honorable in which a man can serve his country"
George Washington
Greetings!
It's not obvious to everyone but George Washington's birthday month provided a good opportunity to celebrate Integrated Water Resources Management, IWRM.
As many of you know, IWRM is used by the Delaware River Basin Commission (DRBC) to manage the same Delaware River that George is crossing in the famous Revolutionary War scene in the banner above.
As a result of IWRM and the Commission's actions, the Delaware is likely healthier now than it was in the 18th century when George set off from its tree-bare shores to find enemy forces in New Jersey.
Today, the Delaware River also makes drinking water available to millions, provides 310 uninterrupted miles of recreation, is an economic driver due to its clean water assets for clean businesses, and is part of a protected ecosystem - all important things to celebrate during President Washington's birthday month!
Another important thing related to IWRM is AWRA's role in focusing the 6th World Water Forum (WWF) on IWRM issues and opportunities.
Along with preparing presentations on groundwater and the water-energy nexus, a handful of AWRA volunteers have been working for months with others internationally to enable this WWF to:
1) Embrace IWRM as a core methodology, and
2) Establish targets to encourage countries around the world to employ IWRM's practices in addressing their water challenges.
For a brief overview as to what AWRA volunteers will be sharing March 12-17 at this 25,000 person event and why this event matters, please click here.
Information on AWRA's policy statement on IWRM can be accessed through AWRA's website by clicking here.
A statement of "Self Evident Truths of the Delaware River Basin Commission (IWRM Principles)" provided by Carol Collier, Executive Director of DRBC and President Elect of AWRA is available by clicking here.Highlights of Forum activities and outcomes will be provided in March's newsletter. This month's newsletter includes a range of articles, videos, and info on a phone app for drinking water on the left.
