Dear   ,

AWRA's Spring Specialty Conference is over, but if you weren't one of the lucky ones to be in Baltimore hearing first-hand how to manage the impact of climate change on water resources, you can check out the proceedings online for a limited time here.   Next up ... the Summer Specialty Conference on IWRM in Snowbird in June.  The Preliminary Program is online.  The workshop and field trip are set.  Everything you need to know is here.

This month's challenge:

Which brings me to our challenge for this month ... what does Integrated Water Resources Management mean to you?  You can google this, of course, if you want, but I'm more interested in what it means to you personally. Send me your definition, and you'll be entered to win an AWRA stainless steel water bottle.  Drawing May 15.

Don't forget to submit your abstract for the 2011 AWRA Annual Conference, too.  Deadline May 13.

N. Mahmoudi from Florida will be drinking from his AWRA stainless steel water bottle soon -- he's the winner of last  month's newsletter challenge :

Q:  Who said: "Nothing in the world is more flexible and yielding than water. Yet when it attacks the firm and the strong, none can withstand it, because they have no way to change it. So the flexible overcome the adamant, the yielding overcome the forceful. Everyone knows this, but no one can do it."

A:  Lao Tze

Have a great month!

Beneath a quarter of the United States are rock types that can dissolve to form caves, sinkholes and other features. Nearly every state has rock layers of limestone, gypsum, and other soluble rocks we call "karst".  Karst is important for many reasons. Almost half of the ground water used for drinking comes from karst aquifers, and karst regions such as the Shenandoah Valley are some of the most productive agricultural lands in the nation. However, the rock layers underneath karst dissolve easily, sometime creating sinkholes that can be a threat to life and property. Yet these soluble rock layers also yield some of the most beautiful and unique natural environments, found in many of our national and state parks.

Webcams as Environment Monitors

(from J. Winchester, Chair of AWRA's Wildland Hydrology Technical Committee, excerpted from a post he  shared with his committee on April 7)

The use of web cams for monitoring hydrology or other natural resources is becoming more common. Cams can be used to watch events in real time in distant or difficult to reach locations, or in places where humans would disturb the natural environment. Cams can either be used to capture still photos at regular intervals (better for places with low connectivity), or stream live video. And with more improvements in camera, power and communications technology, cameras can be put in increasingly remote locations. Some example ...

§         a web cam showing an eagle on its nest in Iowa (135,000+ viewers? Seriously? Who knew it would be so popular?)

§         Here is a web cam pointed at kayak course in Glenwood Springs, CO

§         The manatee cam in Tampa allows you to control the camera

America's WILD READ

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced  an new Virtual Book Club -- America's WILD READ. The first book is noted ecologist E.O. Wilson's first novelAnthill, the story of a boy whose Huck Finn-inspired summer in rural Alabama teaches him deeper understandings of nature and its most ruthless predators. Readers will also share insights on two related essays: Thinking Like a Mountain by Aldo Leopold, an early founder of the land conservation movement, and Once and Future Land Ethic, by Dr. Curt Meine, senior fellow at the Aldo Leopold Foundation. The online discussions of the essays and Anthill will begin on May 1, 2011, and May 15, 2011, respectively. Conservation writers Curt Meine and Will Stolzenburg (author of Where the Wild Things Were) and other scholars, poets, and even an ant expert will moderate the virtual book club organized by the Service's National Conservation Training Center. A complete list of moderators and discussion questions is available at the link above.
