"What's another word for Thesaurus?" Steven Wright
Dear ,
Last month I asked members and friends of AWRA to send me the 10 words or short phrases they thought of when they think of AWRA. I promised that I would do something fun with them ... here's the result!
I realize this might be a little hard to read, so here's a link to a larger PDF of your 10 Words.
Of course, I'm delighted that "water" shows up prominently! (Whew!) Also JAWRA, IMPACT, and "multidisciplinary" are big. And, no one had anything they needed to get off their chest either, so I am smiling.
I also promised to send an AWRA stainless steel water bottle to one lucky, randomly selected participant in the 10 Words Challenge. I am pleased to inform you the E. Hanson of the Vermont Rural Water Association should be receiving his water bottle shortly. Congrats!

This month's challenge:
Who said: "Nothing in the world is more flexible and yielding than water. Yet when it attacks the firm and the strong, none can withstand it, because they have no way to change it. So the flexible overcome the adamant, the yielding overcome the forceful. Everyone knows this, but no one can do it."
Send me your guess, and you'll be entered into a drawing for an AWRA stainless steel water bottle! Drawing on April 22. Fan Us I Follow Us I Join Us

Integrated Water Resources Management:
The Emperor's New Clothes or Indispensable Process Snowbird Resort I Snowbird, UT
June 27-29, 2011
Just what is IWRM, and what does it entail?
How well does IWRM work in practice? According to the Global Water Partnership, Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) is a "process which promotes the coordinated development and management of water, land, and related resources in order to maximize the resultant economic and social welfare in an equitable manner without compromising the sustainability of vital ecosystems." This AWRA Conference will explore IWRM in detail from both US and international perspectives, and looks to answer questions such as: - How does IWRM work in practice?
- What can we learn from IWRM failures?
- Can IWRM be applied to the development of nonrenewable water resources?
- How can IWRM best be implemented?
- How does IWRM relate to governance?
- Can IWRM mitigate conflict and promote cooperation?
- Has IWRM evolved and is there something better?
- How are IWRM and adaptive management related?
- Does IWRM relate well to WaSH (water, sanitation and hygiene)?
- How do we train the next generation of water professionals to apply IWRM?
- Do scientific and technological gaps exist that hinder IWRM?
- Plus many more ...

Water Resources Information
USGS Dallas L. Peck Memorial Auditorium, Reston, VA
Wednesday, April 6, 2011, 7:00 PM Since its creation in 1882, the USGS Library has grown to become the world's largest library dedicated to earth and natural sciences, holding more than 1.5 million volumes and 800,000 maps. Richard Huffine, Director of the USGS Libraries Program, will highlight some of the rarest, most valuable, and significant materials held by the USGS. These include early maps of America, documents that establish the provenance of the Hope Diamond, and documentation of our exploration of the American West by Hayden, King, Powell and Wheeler. The Library's initiative to digitize their collection for online access will make these cultural and historic records available worldwide to anyone at anytime. Join us and learn how the USGS is using history to inform the future directions of USGS research and scholarship.
Call for papers for the new Journal for Water, Sanitation and Hygiene for Development
The Journal of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene for Development, being launched cooperatively by the IWA and the Water institute at UNC, fills a critical gap and compliments other publications in the areas of WaSH and development. It is a peer-reviewed journal devoted to the dissemination of high-quality information on the science, policy and practice of drinking-water supply, sanitation and hygiene at local, national and international levels. The journal publishes original contributions including research, analysis, review and commentary. It emphasizes issues of concern in developing and middle-income countries and in disadvantaged communities world-wide.
US EPA Releases Final "Coming Together for Clean Water, EPA's Strategy to Protect America's Waters"
The Coming Together for Clean Water strategy presents a framework for how EPA's national water program will address clean water challenges and highlights EPA's priorities for achieving our strategic goals. This strategy focuses on the following key areas: ensuring transparency and effectively reporting on the status of the health of all waters; increasing protection of source waters and healthy watersheds; restoring degraded waters and ecosystems; reducing the amount of pollution entering our waters that impact our health and our economy; and tackling new and emerging threats to our waters in a way that will ensure healthier, more livable communities.
NAWQA RELEASE - Tillage Practices by Watershed, Aggregated Across the Nation
Access this newly released USGS data-series report and maps that document county-level tillage practices by 8-digit hydrologic unit watersheds. County-level data were aggregated in cooperation with the Conservation Technology Information Center, including three types of conservation tillage (no-till, ridge-till, and mulch-till), reduced tillage, and intensive tillage. The dataset includes total planted acreage by tillage type for selected crops (corn, cotton, grain sorghum, soybeans, fallow, forage, newly established permanent pasture, spring and fall seeded small grains, and "other" crops) for 1989-2004. This national dataset can be useful in spatial and statistical analyses of land-management practices and their possible effects on the quality of water in nearby surface-water bodies and groundwater. |
