"And the Oscar goes to ..."
~any number of presenters at the Academy Awards
Dear ,
Did you watch the Oscars last night? No big surprises there, I guess, but I thought I would point out the obvious ... even these celebrities, who are showered with attention and praise from morning til night, want the recognition of their peers.
There's still time to nominate one of your deserving peers for an AWRA Board of Directors position, or AWRA Award. And the students in your lives will definitely appreciate knowing about a scholarship opportunity.
We are looking for a few good women and men to serve on our Board of Directors!
Look at the list of awards available and think about which of your colleagues you can nominate!
These scholarships are open to AWRA Members. Pass the word!
Don't miss this chance to recognize a friend or colleague for their contributions to water resources management, or to share this information with a student friend!
Terry Meyer
AWRA P.S. If you'd like a chance at an AWRA stainless steel water bottle, send me the 10 words (or word phrases) you associate most with AWRA. Keep it clean, please! I have something fun planned for these words ...

June 27-29, 2011
Can't believe you missed the abstract submittal deadline?
Just what is IWRM, and what does it entail?
How well does IWRM work in practice? According to the Global Water Partnership, Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) is a "process which promotes the coordinated development and management of water, land, and related resources in order to maximize the resultant economic and social welfare in an equitable manner without compromising the sustainability of vital ecosystems." This AWRA Conference will explore IWRM in detail from both US and international perspectives, and looks to answer questions such as: - How does IWRM work in practice?
- What can we learn from IWRM failures?
- Can IWRM be applied to the development of nonrenewable water resources?
- How can IWRM best be implemented?
- How does IWRM relate to governance?
- Can IWRM mitigate conflict and promote cooperation?
- Has IWRM evolved and is there something better?
- How are IWRM and adaptive management related?
- Does IWRM relate well to WaSH (water, sanitation and hygiene)?
- How do we train the next generation of water professionals to apply IWRM?
- Do scientific and technological gaps exist that hinder IWRM?
- Plus many more ...

USGS Invites Comments on Global Change Science Strategy: A Framework for Understanding and Responding to Climate and Land-Use
In 2007 the USGS developed a Science Strategy outlining 6 overarching strategic science directions that we should focus on over the next 10 years. A team of scientists is now developing a 10-year science strategy for the new Climate and Land Use Change Mission Area. This strategy is being developed to further implement the USGS Science Strategy and will be used in setting priorities and implementation planning for future USGS climate and land-use change programs and activities. This is part of an overall effort to create strategies for all of the new Mission Areas. The USGS invites you to review the draft "USGS Global Change Science Strategy: A Framework for Understanding and Responding to Climate and Land-Use" and provide your comments and feedback. The draft will be available until April 8, 2011.
