Register I Hotel Info I Exhibit Info I Sponsor Info
AWRA will bring together decision-makers, water managers and technical professionals from federal, state, and local agencies, academia, non-governmental organizations and the private sector to focus on the following key questions:
- What climate adaptation strategies, decision-making approaches, planning and evaluation methods do water managers and water professionals need to prepare for climate change impacts on water resources?
- What kinds of assessment and planning approaches do we need, what kind of solutions may be available, how much will they cost, what kinds of institutional adaptation may be necessary, and what might be the environmental and socioeconomic impacts and considerations that need to be taken into account?
The program is set & includes:
- 34 technical sessions providing useful information for addressing critical climate change management issues: enabling informed decision making under heightened uncertainty; assessing climate change impacts; and developing robust and flexible adaptive management approaches.
- A dynamic keynote speaker, the Honorable Ron Simms, Deputy Secretary of HUD (Invited) will draw on his experiences at the federal and municipal levels to describe the challenges and opportunities of managing climate change impacts within the context of the economic, political, environmental, and institutional challenges we are facing.
- An opening plenary panel of senior-level professionals from the federal sector, state government, local government, and the consulting/academia sectors will provide a broad perspective on the challenges faced and initiatives being undertaken to address climate change impacts.
- A luncheon address by Dr. Jane Lubchenco, Administrator of NOAA (Invited), will discuss the Administration's on-going efforts to develop a coordinated federal sector approach to adapting to climate change.
- Facilitated sessions have been designed to discuss and exchange views and lessons learned on key climate-change related water management issues identified by participants.
- A workshop is being planned on "Application of Adaptive Management to Address Climate Change Related Challenges," where participants will learn about transitioning from "adaptation planning" to "adaptive management," applying adaptive management principles across various scales and planning horizons and addressing uncertainty

Just what is IWRM, and what does it entail?
How well does IWRM work in practice?
According to the Global Water Partnership, Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) is a "process which promotes the coordinated development and management of water, land, and related resources in order to maximize the resultant economic and social welfare in an equitable manner without compromising the sustainability of vital ecosystems."
This AWRA Conference will explore IWRM in detail from both US and international perspectives, and looks to answer questions such as:
- How does IWRM work in practice?
- What can we learn from IWRM failures?
- Can IWRM be applied to the development of nonrenewable water resources?
- How can IWRM best be implemented?
- How does IWRM relate to governance?
- Can IWRM mitigate conflict and promote cooperation?
- Has IWRM evolved and is there something better?
- How are IWRM and adaptive management related?
- Does IWRM relate well to WaSH (water, sanitation and hygiene)?
- How do we train the next generation of water professionals to apply IWRM?
- Do scientific and technological gaps exist that hinder IWRM?
- Plus many more ...
