Dear ,
"On a personal note, this conference gave me a feeling that individuals are treated as family. Also, the speakers and panel participants genuinely have a passion for what they are doing and do not mind helping others they do not know. Due to that, I am so pleased to be a member of AWRA which is more than just being a part of an association." AWRA GIS & Water Resources VI Conference Attendee
This comment from an attendee at the 2010 AWRA Spring Specialty Conference made me (and the rest of the AWRA staff, and the Conference Planning Committee) smile. It tells us that the AWRA way of seeking solutions to tough water resources challenges by bringing scientists and practitioners from across the multidisciplinary spectrum WORKS!
And, it has inspired me to make an unprecedented offer to the folks who receive this newsletter, but who are not yet members of AWRA:
Anyone who joins AWRA between now and the end of May will be eligible for a random drawing with these remarkable prizes:
- a complimentary AWRA Annual Water Resources Conference registration* (that's a $445 value!)
- a rare and beautiful AWRA t-shirt
- a super mystery prize
Under "Reason for Joining," put "Newsletter Contest"
and don't tell my boss.
If you're already a member, share this newsletter with your water resources colleagues ... it's what family would do. If you need to renew, click here, and we'll throw your name in the hat, too.

An AWRA Specialty Conference on tropical hydrology was last held in 1998, and it's time to focus our attention on this important issue once again. This conference on Tropical Hydrology & Sustainable Water Resources in a Changing Climate will build on previous conferences to discuss the topic in light of a changing climate. We will consider issues such as water supply, sustainable water planning, water quality, alternative water supplies, and coastal ecosystems.
The Call for Abstracts has closed, and the Program Committee met last week to begin putting together the conference program. The Preliminary Program will be posted shortly. In the meantime, general conference info, hotel & travel info, registration info, exhibit & sponsorship information is available at the links provided here:

Tools for Protecting Coastal Wetlands
Join EPA for a special American Wetlands Month Webcast on Tuesday, May 4, 2010 at 1-3 pm Eastern on "Tools for Protecting Coastal Wetland." A recent report shows that despite a national trend of net gain of wetlands in the conterminous United States, the coastal watersheds of the Atlantic Ocean, Great Lakes, and Gulf of Mexico lost 354,000 acres, or about 59,000 acres per year during the period from 1998-2004. This Webcast will provide information on several tools that can help address impacts on coastal wetland ecosystems from immediate impacts (development) to long-term (sea level rise) in order to help improve decision-making and provide readily accessible information to practitioners. Mercury Contamination of the Environment: From Me to Shining Sea
USGS Reston I May 5, 2010 I 7:00pm to 8:00pm
USGS's next public lecture focuses on mercury in the environment and how what you eat and where you live can make a difference to your health. Hear from a top USGS mercury scientist, Dr. David Krabbenhoft on insights from the world's largest mercury dosing study, why mercury gets in the way of large ecosystem restoration, and how a new mercury map provides sophisticated tools for environmental and health researchers. For centuries mankind has known that exposure to mercury has serious health consequences. Though overt mercury exposure incidences are now rare, researchers continue to improve our understanding of the ways mercury enters our food chain from the world's oceans and what that means for current and future human exposure. More info at the link.
New Report Assesses Business Water Accounting Methods
Effective business water accounting methods are critical for sustainable water management, according to the new Pacific Institute report "Corporate Water Accounting: an Analysis of Methods and Tools for Measuring Water Use and Its Impact," prepared for the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the CEO Water Mandate. Current methods are a good start for measuring water use and impacts, but they are inadequate for the benchmarking essential to help companies identify risk, drive sustainability, and address stakeholders' needs.
