Water Filtration by Potters Without Borders
As a potter myself, I was intrigued by this NPR story about a water filtration system that Potters Without Borders is manufacturing in Yemen. Is it really this simple?

Connections
The E-Newsletter of the
American Water Resources Association
Keeping You Connected
February 2010 |
In lieu of my usual pithy opening quote, this month I invite you to listen to it for a change. It's a brief poem by Taylor Mali, and it takes just two minutes. I know you'll love it.
The lesson of this month's quote is to speak with conviction. I see (and hear) myself in some of what Taylor Mali says. And so -- at least for this month's issue -- I will speak with conviction.
I think if you are a water resources professional whose job involves working across disciplines to solve important and complex water resources challenges, you should be a member of the American Water Resources Association. Many of you who read this newsletter are already members; many are not.
I'll be drawing the name of one lucky new member who joins between February 26 and March 8 to win a rare and beautiful AWRA t-shirt. Just put "TSHIRT" in the "Recommended by" field of the membership application!
Have a totally -- like -- cool weekend ... okay?
Terry

An AWRA Specialty Conference on tropical hydrology was last held in 1998, and it's time to focus our attention on this important issue once again. This conference on Tropical Hydrology & Sustainable Water Resources in a Changing Climate will build on previous conferences to discuss the topic in light of a changing climate. We will consider issues such as water supply, sustainable water planning, water quality, alternative water supplies, and coastal ecosystems.

Opportunities Abound for Recognition & Service at AWRA!
"What every genuine philosopher (every genuine man, in fact) craves most is praise - although the philosophers generally call it 'recognition'!" ~ William James
The AWRA Call for Nominations for the 2010 AWRA Awards is online now. AWRA is also accepting nominations for the 2011 AWRA Board of Directors. AWRA State Sections and Student Chapters may submit their entries for AWRA Outstanding State Section and Student Chapter Awards. AND, information about AWRA's Richard A. Herbert Memorial Scholarships has been posted on our website, too. Here are the relevant links for more information:
More information about AWRA's awards can be found here.
Remembering that, as the Latin proverb goes ... "It is the greatest possible praise to be praised by a man who is himself deserving of praise," take a few minutes to check out all the opportunities for recognition, think of your colleagues and how they have advanced water resources over the course of their careers, and submit a nomination in the appropriate category. And, forward the scholarship information to the students you know. |

International Riverfoundation is a not-for-profit organisation based in Australia with a vision of a world in which all rivers and waterways are healthy and sustainably managed. In order to reach our ambitious mission to drive the restoration and protection of the world's rivers, International Riverfoundation rewards outstanding achievement in river restoration and/or protection by annually awarding the International and Australian Riverprizes. This year, the International Thiess Riverprize is valued at AUD$350,000. Entering the Riverprize provides an opportunity for organisations involved in river management activities to reflect on their achievements, have their efforts acknowledged and judged by leaders in river management, and to receive feedback on the standard of their work in comparison to world leaders. All organisations, big and small, engaged in all aspects of river management are eligible to apply. Nominations are welcomed from community groups, catchment management associations, local councils and international river commissions. More info & nomination packet available at the link.
