"What every genuine philosopher (every genuine man, in fact) craves most is praise - although the philosophers generally call it 'recognition'!" ~ William James
Recognition is in the air! The AWRA Call for Nominations for the 2010 AWRA Awards is online now. AWRA is also accepting nominations for the 2011 AWRA Board of Directors. AWRA State Sections and Student Chapters may submit their entries for AWRA Outstanding State Section and Student Chapter Awards. AND, information about AWRA's Richard A. Herbert Memorial Scholarships has been posted on our website, too. Here are the relevant links for more information:
More information about AWRA's awards can be found here.
Remembering that, as the Latin proverb goes ... " It is the greatest possible praise to be praised by a man who is himself deserving of praise," take a few minutes to check out all the opportunities for recognition, think of your colleagues and how they have advanced water resources over the course of their careers, and submit a nomination in the appropriate category. And, forward the scholarship information to the students you know.
For our part, we celebrate every membership renewal and every new member here at AWRA! So, if you're a member and need to renew, renew here. If you're not yet a member, join here.

"Passing Strange - The Secret Life of Clarence King"
Wednesday, February 3, 2010 at 7:00pm Noted author Martha Sandweiss will share the amazing story of the secret life of Clarence King, the first USGS director. While he was well-known as a brilliant scientist and architect of the great surveys that mapped the West after the Civil War, he held a deep secret that was not revealed until decades later. Come hear this fascinating account of a man who by day socialized with the upper reaches of society and by night lived secretly as a black man. Not even his family knew his secret.
