Connections

The E-Newsletter of the

American Water Resources Association

Keeping You Connected

December 2009

Dear :

Two things:

First ... Remember this quote I asked you to identify from the November Connections? (I asked for the title of the book and the author in which this appears for the chance at a rare and beautiful AWRA t-shirt.)

"He was a partner at a Seattle firm called Berman Piper with 'extensive experience in civil litigation, land use, and environmental law' and had been named in '98 by Washington Law & Politics magazine, a "Super Lawyer."  There was photograph of a slim, nearly drawn man about 60 wearing a blue blazer and graying at the temples; he was a member of the American Water Resources Association, the Downtown Seattle Association, the Planning Association of Washington, and the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties."

The correct answer is The Other by David Guterson, who won his PEN/Faulkner Award for his earlier novel, Snow Falling on Cedars.  Which, by the way, we've had a lot around here lately -- snow, that is. And here's proof -- that's me enjoying the snow in my backyard:

Do you have a favorite picture of you in the snow?  Send it to me for fun, and I'll see if I can figure out a way to share them.

Anyway ... We had so many correct entries.  I understand that Google was your friend for this one.  Next time, it won't be so easy!  Brian Todd from the Missouri Department of Conservation is our winner.  Congratulations, Brian!  As soon as he tells me his t-shirt size, I will send it out.

Second ... have a safe and happy holiday, and we'll see you in the New Year!  (If you're a member and need to renew, please do so now. Renew here. If you're not yet a member, AWRA membership makes a very thoughtful and lovely self-gift! Join here.)

2010 AWRA Summer Specialty Conference
Tropical Hydrology & Sustainable Water Resources
in a Changing Climate
 San Juan, Puerto Rico
August 30 - September 1, 2010

An AWRA Specialty Conference on tropical hydrology was last held in 1998, and it's time to focus our attention on this important issue once again.  This 2010 Conference and Eighth Caribbean Island Water Resources Congress will build on previous conferences to discuss the topic in light of a changing climate.  We will consider issues such as water supply, sustainable water planning, water quality, alternative water supplies, and coastal ecosystems.

USGS Public Lecture Series Continues

The U.S. Geological Survey will present the next lecture in the USGS Public Lecture Series:  Science in Action on Wednesday, January 6, 2010.  The lecture entitled "Flight from Extinction:  Helping Whooping Cranes Survive" will take place in the Dallas L. Peck memorial auditorium from 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm.  All are welcome, and the lectures and parking is free.  More information on the lecture series can be found at the link above.

The US Forest Service Technology and Development Center in San Dimas, the Northern Research Station, and EPA are partnering to facilitatecompletion of a literature review describing the effectiveness of forest road Best Management Practices (BMPs). The resulting document will have many applications, but the overall focus will be to identify how well the effectiveness of individual road-related BMPs has been scientifically validated.  Their focus is on literature that describes the effectiveness of individual BMPs or other applicable techniques.  To get the greatest breadth of information, literature that involves not only forest road BMPs directly, but also BMPs or techniques used in other road types and activities that have application to forest roads are of interest.  A

first compilation of citations is located at the link above. If you know of other publications out there, including journals, graduate student theses, and gray literature - or if you have questions - please let Pam Edwards know. Hard copies or electronic copies are best, but if you only have a citation, send it along.

Hydroseek is an ontology-aided search engine for finding scientific data on water quality and hydrology from approximately 1.9 million sites in the USA. Hydroseek creates a unified view over databases of agencies such us US Geological Survey, Environmental Protection Agency, Texas Commission of Environmental Quality, Chesapeake Information Management System, National Atmospheric Deposition Program, Long Term Ecological Research Network and individual researchers removing the semantic, syntactic and information system heterogeneity barriers to improve the search experience and reduce time spent on data discovery and preparation prior to processing.  More info at the link.

In January 2009, Dr. Peter H. Gleick of the Pacific Institute, addressed legislators and staff from the House of Representatives and the Senate on "Climate Change: Intersections of Science and Policy" in two briefings sponsored by the American Association for the Advancement of Science. His presentation is available for downloading at the above link.
